It's been a good while since I've read a vampire book that I just devoured (pun but not accidental 😉)
Ruby and her twin Ripley have been training as vampire hunters until Rip is turned by the most wanted vamp, X, who strikes a deal with Ruby to rescue his BFF from her people.
Ruby is the best. She never gave up on her sister even when at the risk of her own life. I love the soft moments we get of X. He lost a lot when he was turned and at the end, I feel he's doing things that can help redeem all the death and destruction he caused. There are surprises in the big battle at the end which I should have seen coming but they were shocking.

Vampires.. Check
Dystopian... Check
Morally Grey.. Check
It's a wild thrill ride of a story... Check
I Have to say I wasn't sure what to expect when I got this one; I'll admit it: I saw vampires and said sign me up and I'm so glad I did.
Ruby, oh, Ruby, have you ever read a character that just made your heart hurt? That was Ruby for me, and I still wish things had gone differently for her, but.... well, I'm not giving away any spoilers.
I will say I don't normally get drawn to dystopian, but this one has made me want to take chances on the genre, so I'd say that's a good thing.
Thank you to NetGalley and Entangled Teen for providing a copy of this E-Book, I have voluntarily read and reviewed it and all thoughts and opinions are my own.

What’s better than a good old fashion YA dystopian vampire story?!?! Nothing! That’s what!!!
This story takes place in a dystopian world set a few decades from now where half the population has turned into either Vampires or mindless “bloodsuckers”!
Our story follows Ruby who along side her little sister is training to be a vampire slayer. While outside the safe zone, Ripley ( the sister ) is attacked and turned into a vampire… now Ruby has to team up with “X”, the vampire who she has been training to take out, to keep her safe while she tries to figure out how to cure her.
Lines get blurry and enemies become friends, friends become enemies, and there could be a budding romance on the horizon!
This one was action packed and I loved every second of it!!

This was such a fun read. I love the dystopian/post apocalyptic backdrop of this vampire story. Vampires are running wild and taking over. When an especially monstrous vamp turns the sister of our MC, choices are made. I love how she believes her sister is still in the vamp is willing to do whatever she has to in order to help her. I found myself rooting for people I never would have thought I was rooting for.

Vampires and bloodwalkers have taken over the world and the remaining humans have banded together to create compounds where they can safely live while trying to eradicate the vampires. Ruby has been training to be a vampire slayer for many years and the hatred of vampires has been festering in her for even longer. It's easy to ignore until her twin sister, Ripley, is turned by the infamous and extremely dangerous vampire, X. Now Ruby has to work together with X to keep her sister safe until she can find a way to save her. But will that hatred be enough to resist X and his charm?
This was a captivating YA dystopian story set in the familiar setting of Charlotte, North Carolina. I don't typically gravitate towards YA titles but the synopsis of this one had me utterly intrigued. The writing gripped me from the very beginning and I was quickly invested in this world and these characters. There was so much tension between Ruby and X and I loved how much Ruby truly adored her sister. This was a quick read and I highly recommend this for something unique that will draw you right in!
Thank you to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for the ARC!

This book was SO good! I zipped through it in under 24 hours & I loved every element- from the adventure to the horror to the romance.
I feel like the best way to describe this book is still a YA version of Vampire Diaries, season 4 of Buffy (everything w/ the Initiative iykyk) & World War Z.
The characters were all really engaging, even the side characters & I definitely bought into X & Ruby’s enemies to lovers storyline. I loved that both characters were incredibly flawed because in a world like the one the author created, everyone is going to have some monstrous qualities to them.
Definitely worth the read for any YA dystopian or vampire fan!

This was an action packed take on the vampire monster.
I enjoyed the fast pace, and also the fact that the romance was important, but it didnt take too much from the rest of the story.
The title does not fit the vibe at all.

This is very YA which I do read and enjoy some YA but I didn’t get as into this as some others. It is an interesting storyline but ultimately not my favorite style of book. I think middle school may enjoy it more.

You’ve trained for years to become a slayer. Your first target: your twin sister.
Welcome to Vaille, a haven to a world overrun by vampires. Ruby has always been her sister Ripley's protector, but after X, the relentless vampire leader, turns Ripley, Ruby faces an impossible choice: Vaille and her training, or her family. Readers will be thrust into the world of Ruby's sworn enemies in hopes of finding a cure. With a breakneck pace and a story full of twists and turns, Harris brings fresh blood to the young adult vampire genre. Intense relationships, memorable characters, nonstop action, and a blood-soaked near-future apocalyptic world are sure to enrapture fans of Seanan McGuire and V.E. Schwab. While perfect as a standalone, readers will be left ravenous for a sequel.

An addicting YA dystopian set in a post apocalyptic world with vampires that had me hooked from the start! While the romance is a slow burn, the banter between Ruby and X totally made it worth it. Ruby’s a strong, fierce main character, and her twin sister Ripley are training to be a vampire slayer. The world-building is really well done. I got a clear sense of how everything’s changed and the constant struggles that come with surviving in it. Ruby is snarky and deadly. She’s the kind of character who’ll stake a vampire with sass. Add X into the mix and it’s both hilarious and surprisingly sweet. I found myself looking forward to every scene they had together.
Ruby has to work with X to keep Ripley safe from other slayers. But can a human and a vampire really team up, especially with so much on the line? Time’s running out, lives are at stake, and it’s survival of the fittest.
This is perfect for lovers of YA dystopian, vampires, slayers, reluctant allies, slow burn romance, witty banter, and bloodsucker with a heart.

This book had me in a CONSTANT chokehold. I thought about this book when I wasn't reading & when I was reading, I was thoroughly interested in what was going to happen next!
"The Ground That Devours Us" is a Single POV, Enemies to Lovers, Future Dystopian, Vampire/Bloodwalkers & Slayers where our FMC is willing to do anything to protect & save her twin sister Ripley.
This is set in the years of 2038+ & the world has fallen into dystopian chaos since the dead have literally awoken from their graves NOT as zombies but as Bloodwalkers (no conscious behavior) & Vampires (Able to act as humans but you know a lot stronger lol..) Ruby (Our FMC) & Ripley are twins who were found & raised at the age of 8 by the leader of the Vaille, Barnett to become Slayers. (Humans who hunt & k*ll Vampires/Bloodwalkers.) Our MMC "X" is the leader of the Vampires & he is target #1 to the Slayers of the Vaille.
& can you guess who Ruby needs to team up with to find & "save" her sister? lol... That's right our MMC X.
I loved the relationship between Ruby & Ripley, but what I loved even more was their growth outside of being sisters. They each had the opportunity throughout this story to become individuals while still loving & sacrificing for each other.
I have not picked up a YA book in quite a few years, but this is one I will highly recommend. Thank you so much to Kalla Harris, Entangled Teen Publishing & Netgalley for the eARC & the opportunity to read this book.

Dystopian and vampires are SO back! Forget what you think you know about vampires because this book takes the traditional stereotypes and flips them on their head. This book takes place a few decades in the future in a world where vampires have taken over- almost like a zombie apocalypse and the world is split into slayers and vampires. In this story we follow sisters Ruby and Ripley as they train under the leadership of their adoptive father Barnett to become vampire slayers... I really don't want to say more than this because I don't want to spoil the plot! This is definitely a unique YA novel!
Thank you to Entangled Publishing for the eEARC!

Dystopian fantasy isn’t usually my thing, but I’m really glad I gave The Ground That Devours Us a try. It’s Kala Harris’s debut book. The world she created is super intense: vampires have taken over everything and it’s a total mess. The stakes are high from the first few pages in.
What I loved the most was the relationship between Ruby and X. Their snarky banter and will-they won’t-they vibes made the story way more fun and interesting. Honestly, if I’d picked this book just based on the description and reviews, I wouldn’t have guessed it’s a dystopian fantasy romance, but the romance fits perfectly and feels really natural.
The plot is solid — Ruby’s twin sister gets turned into a vampire, and Ruby has to team up with the worst vampire ever to save her. There’s a lot of cool action and some real emotional moments mixed in, with just enough humor to keep it light.
My only complaint is that the beginning of the book was dragging for me, but overall, this was a great debut. Definitely recommend if you like dystopian stories with complicated characters and some sass thrown in! Or if you’re searching for a fantasy romance that’s set in a new/refreshing world.

I enjoyed reading this dark dystopian fantasy featuring a vampire hunter, Ruby, trying to save her sister, Ripley, in a post-apocalyptic wasteland called the Open and striking a deal with a notorious vampire, X, to ensure her sister's safety. There was plenty of action, suspense, and some enemies to lovers romance thrown into the storyline. Our characters were not without flaws, but learning their backstories, you start to empathize with their plight. In a world filled with despair and nightmares, hope is a necessity in order to survive and have a future worth living for.

"The Ground That Devours Us" by Kalla Harlen is a horror novel that blends elements of suspense and dark fantasy. Really enjoyed its atmospheric writing, chilling plot, and well-developed characters. The book is known for its unsettling themes and intense scenes, which may not be suitable for all readers. Overall, it's a compelling read for those who enjoy dark, immersive stories.

*I was given this book as an eArc but my review is based solely on my own thoughts and opinions*
I like the addition of blood walker and vampires, different kinds to be afraid of. I’m not use to vampire apocalypses so this was cool. Love the idea of a slayer type school, tester squadron thingy, Hunt is what they call it. I think this book is a huge hit. The storyline, characters, deaths, love triangle and romance of it all. Has a happy ending. It is very YA so keep that in mind. Also, very long but it’s worth it. Has like Hunger games, warm bodies feel with a splash of other things as well.

This is a must read for everyone who enjoys vampire books.
Since being taken into Vaille Ruby and her twin sister Ripley have been trained to hunt and kill vampires. Where Ruby has thrived, Ripley has withered. When things go south the night before becoming official Slayers what choice will Ruby make?
Protect her sister? Protect the people of Vaille? Or will she follow her heart and do what she wants?

What a fun ride! The Ground That Devours Us kept me entertained and I loved this vampire world. It was different, apocalyptic, and oh that slow burn! The mc was quippy and fun as were her friends. I can't wait to get my hands on a physical copy for my trophy shelf.
Thank you to NetGalley and Entangled for this ARC read.

Thank you to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for the ARC. All opinions are my own 🫶🏼

I struggled in the beginning with this book, it was a little slow. However, it picked up and I didn't want to put it down. In one reading sitting I read over 70% of the book.
Vampires. Need I say more? How about vampire slayers? Hello Buffy anyone?
Ruby has one person left in her left, her twin sister Ripley. What could go wrong when your charged with protecting your entire squadron, that includes your sister, on a supply run with bloodwalkers swarming? You'll just have to read and find out.
The slow burn enemies to lovers was very done. It never felt rushed, or out of place. Ruby and X are the definition of enemies.
I'd definitely recommend this one.
