Thank you to Entangled Teen, Entangled Insiders & NetGalley for an eARC in exchange for my honest review! 🤍
I really, really enjoyed TGTDU! It’s been a long time since I’ve read a vampire book I’ve been completely enthralled in but this one finally broke that spell for me! It’s such a unique take on vampires and it’s about time we all jump right back into that phase. If you scrambled up The Vampire Diaries, Shatter Me and The Last of Us you would get this book 😍 It’s a very easy read full of banter, hope and slow burn between complete enemies!
Following Ruby, who had lost everything in her life from the vampire takeover except for one person.. her twin sister Ripley. Her last promise to their mother was that she would protect Ripley, and that she does. They are taken under the wing of Barnett as their father and leader of the Vaille (the safe zone from the “Open” in Charlotte). This is where they will spend their young lives growing up and spending years training to become a Slayer. Ruby has just one mission left until that day comes and when she receives her missive it seems easy. Raid the local aquarium for medical supplies while protecting her squadron, which includes Ripley, from Bloodwalkers ..a simple in and out ordeal. But nothing is ever that simple.. is it?

This book surprised me a bit, mainly because I had certain expectations when I read the combination of 'dystopia', 'vampires', and 'romantasy'. But I really enjoyed THE GROUND THAT DEVOURS US, and found it to be a creative and wholly original vampire story that didn't fall into obvious pitfalls of vampire romance. I thought that Ruby the slayer and X the vampire had some really good chemistry, going from enemies to lovers in a way that didn't feel rushed, unearned, or unbelievable, and I also enjoyed the world that Harris built and all the very unique takes on how it could work. AND I liked the way she also tackles the idea of tribalism, propaganda, and brainwashing. I would probably read more in this world if she was going to do more. Very BUFFY coded in some ways too, which I always appreciate.

This book did a great job of pulling me into the story from the first page. I found the characters enjoyable, but young. I liked the different take on vampires. This book was well written and overall enjoyable. This is very much a solid teen book. As an adult I found the characters somewhat lacking but I know that teen me would have adored the characters. Overall a solid 4 star read. If there is a next book I will be reading it as well.

The Ground that Devours Us is a dystopian vampire story that couldn’t have been more fun to read. Set in Charlotte a few decades from today, half the humans are now powerful vampires or mindless bloodsuckers, and the others are just hoping to survive. Ruby and her sister Ripley are training to become vampire slayers, and if they are lucky they’ll end the most menacing vamp of all, X.
I was swept right up into this story which was full of action, twists, and romantic banter (he calls her Little Gem! 🥰). Loved the bond between the sisters. There was a surprising amount of humanity and kindness for a book with so much killing. I would love to read more of this story!

The Ground That Devours Us is a fantastic debut young adult novel. This book is refreshing, well-written, and entertaining. I loved the unique plot and the vampire/dystopian combination. Add in some action, betrayal, and an unexpected romance, and you've got yourself a recipe for a good time.
I look forward to reading more from this author in the future!

The Ground That Devours Us by Kalla Harris is an incredible debut that yes, I DEVOURED!!!!
This is a dystopian YA vampire dark romance that I absolutely LOVED!
Humans and Vampires are fighting each other. It was a quick read.
I really loved the world building.
The pace of the story was fast paced. Ruby and X are wonderful characters and well developed.
The dialogue was excellent.
There are some twists and turns that kept me flipping the pages.
This is a great YA novel, that I highly recommend!

I want to say thank you to entangledteen for letting me have this opportunity to have this arc.
I have to say, this book it’s so well written.
It’s a slow start, but it picked up so quick, that I could not put down!
Reading this reminded me of warm hearts and Disney movie zombies.
I just loved it.
There’s so much going on, but I love the witty banter, the unexpected romance, the betrayal.
The thing that I loved the most, is that how we can get so caught up in the organization that we’re in. That we let ourselves to loose ourselves, our real wants because someone said so. Then we get confuse when we get out of it, or someone else teaches us, the real truth.
I feel like is so relatable on now a days, especially right now.
Thank you to the author for writing this.
The what the ending close, I’m hoping that they’ll be more. But I’m selfish I △⃒⃘Lways want more lol

Thank you to NetGalley, Entangled Publishing, and Kalka Harris for the granting me the privilege to read this amazing book.
The characters, Ruby, Ripley, X, Barnett, Gail, Mira, Monroe, (to many to individually name), but all are fantastic. Some I fell in love with, some I felt both compassion and hate. Like walking a tightrope.
Vampires vs Humans to the extreme. Kill or be killed. There were so many ups and downs. So many emotional swings. I felt every emotion from love, hate, joy, fear, horror and more
I read this book nonstop in one day.
You are going to love it! Some questions I asked myself: Who is to be trusted? Will they destroy each other? Will they ever learn to live harmoniously? Is it possible?
Highly recommend!

3.5⭐️
Many thanks to Kalla Harris for including The Ground That Devours Us in the SFF Arc giveaway.
Ah, gotta love a good YA vampire forbidden love romance.
The Ground That Devours Us is a dystopian YA vampire romance where the dawn of vampirism has brought the end of the world, and now humans and vampires are at war.
This was a good YA book! It is an entertaining, high stakes read.
The plot is FAST. At some points I do wish it slowed down, there were some spots where chunks of time were skipped, and I wish there was just more world building. It is fast paced, and that did add to the drama and entertainment value.
I really enjoyed Ruby’s and X’s storyline and banter, and I do wish we got to dig into the background of some of the side characters more. Their characters were really well done and made you feel for them while they are navigating not only what is expected of them is this new world, but their at odds feelings for each other.
The ending was action packed, and I loved the twists! Preteen me would’ve eaten this UP, and I expect lots of preteens and teens will too.

I loved this book! It had me hooked from the beginning. I fell in love with the dystopian world and relatable characters. Ruby and X have my whole heart. I just love them both so much! They have some incredible chemistry and fun banter. And a slow burn romance that's filled with tension. But it’s definitely worth the wait! If you like dystopian and paranormal books, this is for you. I highly recommend it!
Thank you to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for allowing me to read this book ahead of release in exchange for my honest opinion.

“What are you most afraid of?”
“You. A thousand times, you.” 💚
This was such a quick, fun read and I absolutely loved the banter between X and Ruby! Some of their dialogue actually made me laugh out loud. I also loved that he called her little gem. 🥹
I absolutely loved the world building and I really felt like I could perfectly picture the post-apocalyptic nature of the world the characters were living in.
While this book is targeted toward young adults, it’s a little bit on the darker side in terms of the descriptions of death/dead bodies, so just be prepared when reading those scenes.
Also, while I think this book had a solid ending where everything was wrapped up nicely, I would love a sequel!
If you are looking for a dark YA dystopian book set in a post-apocalyptic world and love enemies to lovers, witty humor, and a forbidden paranormal romance (human x vampire), then this one is for you! 💜
The Ground That Devours Us releases on June 3rd, so be sure to check it out! Thank you so much to Entangled Publishing (Entangled Teen) and Netgalley for an advanced copy!

Such a fun and quick dystopian, vampire read. I loved the banter and the pacing of the book wad perfect. I honestly didnt want this one to end.

A fun return to dystopian romance! The Ground That Devours Us brings action, banter, and a touch of slow-burn romance that’s easy to get into. The pacing keeps things moving, and the characters have just enough bite to keep you hooked. Definitely one to add to your TBR!

Loved everything about this book, read it in 5 hours it was that good I just couldn’t stop. The story was really unique, the characters were great, there was enough detail to get your teeth into but not too much that it made the story slow in pace. Everything about this book was just outstanding!

Oh wow! What a fantastic debut novel from Kalla Harris. This was so engaging and it had me pretty much glued to my kindle for most of the week. Kalla creates an exciting YA post apocalyptic story where it’s a war between humans and vampires, but she puts a unique spin on her vampires. It actually kind of gave me the willies.
The FMC Ruby is such a warrior and I admired her strength, determination, courage, and her love for her sister. Now X… mmh. He is terrifying and yet magnetic at the same time and just like Ruby you can’t help but be drawn to him. Seriously, their scenes together were everything and not to mention the sarcasm with each other had me laughing.
From start to finish I couldn’t put this book down. The ending leaves you with a feeling of hope, but I must say that I would love to know what happens in the future for the characters.
A huge thank you to @entangledteen for an ARC copy for review!

I truly did want to *devour* this book (see what I did there 😉). Growing up I was a Twilight-Stan and I would religiously watch Buddy the Vampire Slayer. So when I saw an opportunity from Entangled Publishing, Entangled Insiders FB group, and NetGalley to read the ARC for The Ground That Devours Us about vampires and humans, I was immediately intrigued! And let me tell you, this book did not disappoint!
At first I was iffy about how much I would actually enjoy this book, but it quickly captured my interest and my need for wanting to know what will happen next! I’ve never watched The Walking Dead or The Vampire Diaries (it’s on my to-watch list, I promise!) but from what I’ve heard, it also mirrors many ideologies about each show — the Zombie-likeness for bloodsuckers vs. vampires with humanity and a human that tries to first kill then save them all.
This dark fantasy story follows Ruby, a vampire slayer twin that is desperate to protect her sister and find a cure to save her, Ruby finds an unlikely ally that not only makes her question everything she’s ever known, but look at herself in a different light and trust the very thing that ruined her life.

Dystopian romance is back, baby! THE GROUND THAT DEVOURS US is sure to take the YA world by storm. Harris blends high-stakes adventure, swoon worthy romance, and witty humor together to create a book readers will want to *devour * in a single sitting.

I’m going to start off by saying that I enjoyed reading this dystopian vampire novel. Overall it was a fun quick read that’s reminiscent of the vampire and dystopian books of the mid aughts and early 2010’s.
That being said I was foolish to read the reviews that were posted as it’s not something I usually do. Why did I this time? Well I happened to notice when they were written so I knew they were the requisite close author friends or family 5⭐️ reviews so I knew I wouldn’t take much stock in them. However, I got excited after reading them with the adjectives used. Saying things like “high stakes adventure, swoon worthy romance and witty humor” and “stab you in the angstiest part of your heart and you will thank her for it”
Now remember, I enjoyed this book and recommend this book to others…. But I felt like I read a very different book than what was described in the quotes above. I didn’t get angst… well maybe for a short bit at the 85% area during the climax of the action. The issue was that action wasn’t until 80% of the book was done as it was then that it finally picked up. Before that it plodded along and at times was very repetitive.
I guess you could say it’s a very slow burn type romance? I think part of the “issue” is for a romantasy it’s a rather short book at only 300 kindle pages which makes it hard to meet all the typical pieces.
That being said the reader got a very clear picture of what this dystopian world looks and feels like. The author did a great job detailing the world and supported it throughout the book.
Dystopian isn’t usually my favorite genre as I can be really picky but I thoroughly enjoyed the world she created. The one strange thing is that I felt like the book had a zombie quality to it and not vampires. I mean it’s all about vampires and talk about blood sucking and all the vampire things but the behavior and how everyone fits in the world just scream zombie to me. It didn’t take away my enjoyment, it’s just that I can’t picture them as vampires…
I also liked the group of “let’s be different from the expectation” type resistance groups which is present in the book. I’m not going to give details as not to spoil anything. As far as the romance.. meh. I liked the outcome but felt there couldn’t have been more watching it unfold insofar as the details given along the way.
I am looking forward to any future sequels if that’s in the cards!
I am thankful to have gotten a complimentary eARC from Entangled Publishing through NetGalley to read which gave me the opportunity to voluntarily leave a review.
My rating system since GoodReads doesn’t have partial stars
⭐️ Hated it
⭐️⭐️ Had a lot of trouble, prose issues, really not my cup of tea (potentially DNF’d or thought about it)
⭐️⭐️⭐️ Meh, it was an ok read but nothing special
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Really enjoyed it! Would recommend to others
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Outstanding! Will circle back and read again

Vampires, slayers, and angst--and omg the SNARK! It's hard to believe this is a debut. Highly recommend to anyone looking for an escapist, propulsive read that will keep you up at night and also get you in all the feels. Ruby and X forever!!!
