I adore Anne Bishop and I was over the moon when I received this ARC through NetGalley. It’s been a while since I’ve read the Others series (and a very long time since Daughter of the Blood, which I’m now moving significantly up my TBreR list) and this one was interesting in that it spent less time validating the “Other” nature of the Wyrd and more time simply telling a story in which humanity’s pride and stupidity featured large and were subsequently punished.

Much as with the Others series, the monsters here are not pretty, nor are they interested in humanity as anything more than an annoyance. Similarly anyone reading this hoping for a love story is going to be disappointed. Nonetheless, there is a happy ending (of sorts), and all the ends are neatly snipped off for this to be read as a standalone. I hope though that there is more to come, because I love a story about monsters, most particularly one that accepts them, sharp teeth and predatory drive and all, even as the soft and squishy humans are shown to be the real evil, with all their lies and greed and manipulation.

This reminds me a lot of the Others if they lived Underhill. Great new world by one of my favourite authors.

Turns of Fate by Anne Bishop, a well written book. The writing style was simply not for me though I do think other people will enjoy it, Thank you for giving me a chance with this book.

Anne Bishop continues to create worlds that I want to live in. With all the horrible and shameful things that are going on in our country right now, it is nice to see the bad guys (a.k.a. the rich and powerful) get their just rewards!

I am so excited for this series! I was on the edge of my seat and felt emerged into the world of Isle of Wyrd. I feel my heart beat speeding up and shattering in the future and I am so gladly going to sacrifice myself for that!

The Isle of Wyrd is a place where you can meet your fate, and earn a warning or even strike a bargain... if you are brave enough and follow the rules. But justice is swift and hungry, so mind your manners.

Detective Beth Fahey just moved to the human settlement across the river Fate. And she's on the task force that navigates between the humans and the Arcana’s unforgiving laws. But everytime anyone steps on the island, on official or unoffical business they take their own fate in their hands.

Why I started this book: Bishop is one of my favorite authors and I jumped at the chance to read her new series.

Why I finished it: Deliciously unsettling, where justice comes with the hit of the uncanny. (Please be advised that I am a total scaredy cat, and anyone who likes horror will probably not be impressed.) Great start to the series and I'm so pumped for more. That's the benifit and curse of ARCs, less waiting now and more waiting later.
