I really enjoyed this book. It was a little bit of a slow start, but picked up. I am hoping this is part of a series by this author. It very much reminded me of an Agatha Christie novel in the format that it was presented.

British expat Minnie Harper is settled into her quiet life on the Greek Island of Corfu. Prior to his death, her husband asked her to remain on the island with their kids, and she’s been holding onto that promise.

But it’s the turn of the twentieth century, and Minnie’s life and the world at large are about to change. Her daughter is begging to attend school in Britain; her son is growing more and more everyday; and a famous, rather handsome, and recently divorced mystery author has just moved in next door.

Minnie Harper and Stephen Dorian don’t make the best first impressions on each other, and yet he still reaches out and offers her a job as a typist transcribing his written manuscript for his next novel.

When a maid is found dead near both of their homes and the authorities don’t appear to be putting their resources into truly solving the case, Minnie and Stephen launch an investigation of their own.

It’s like Stephen’s arrival and the investigation wake Minnie back up. She’s living again, not just existing.

It’s a historical cozy mystery with the sloooooow burn beginnings of a romance brewing. Forced proximity! The baring of forearms! A day trip that unexpectedly becomes an overnight excursion! I look forward to seeing their romantic arc develop over the course of the series.

Some of my very favorite parts include Minnie’s scandalized—and distracted—reactions to Stephen’s state of undress related to their social class in that time period—please see the aformentioned forearms—and all the little details that add up to unravel the mystery and reveal the party responsible for the murder. (Cue dramatic reveal music.)

Siobhan Waring’s narration is fitting for this story. If you’ve listened to historical mysteries or historical romance novels before, the style should be familiar to you. With consistent British and Greek accents for the cast of characters, it’s an enjoyable listen that will transport you to the Greek Isles at the turn of the twentieth century along with Minnie and Stephen.

I received an advance copy of the audiobook from Tantor Audio. All review opinions are my own.

If you have a mystery, you need to drop more clues. Also, like nothing happened? I know it is supposed to be cozy, but I still need to be entertained.

This is NOT a romance.
It did feature an older female widow with young children.

Everyone raved about the setting and this could have taken place in a small village in England and I don’t think much would have changed.
I also think much more could have done to make this more clearly a historical piece.

Perhaps cozy mysteries are not for me because I am clearly an outlier here.

Audiobook arc gifted publisher.

This was so much fun. Minnie and Stephen were great characters to follow and I'm obsessed with their budding romance. I loved the setting of the Greek islands. It was summery and fresh and really lent itself to both the romance and the mystery. Speaking of the mystery, it was nicely constructed and had me guessing for a while as to who the culprit was. I also really liked the historical elements. The British community in Greece is not something I've read about before.

Overall, I really enjoyed this historical cozy mystery, and I can't wait for book two to come out!

Thanks to Tantor Audio and NetGalley for my audio arc!

Minnie moved away from her British roots … with her husband, to Greece, in order to give the children a better place to grow up…and spread their wings.
But that all changed when he died… and now she must raise them alone, and with little money.
This is all taking place in the late 1800’s.

When a well known mystery writer moves in to the house next door, Minnie is intrigued. But then she realizes that he might not be all she thinks he’s cracked up to be… And then, when a friend’s maid goes missing… and is later found dead by Millie, well…she needs to get to the bottom of this. She cannot leave it in the hands of the incapable police…

She has taken a well paying job with Mr. Dorian…to help with his typing, if he can get over his writers block… But in the meantime the two of them set out to find out just what happened to poor Daphne (the maid) …. who is becoming more and more interesting with all they find out AFTER her death!

And as time goes on the stakes seem to get higher and higher… and the more intertwined they get with the case, the closer the two of them come to death! And, I never saw that ending coming!! 😮😮😮

#ADeathOnCorfu by #EmilySullivan and narrated nicely by #ShiobanWaring.

4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me!

Minnie Harper has lived on the island of corfu since her husbands retirement. But after his unexpected death, she is trying to figure out who she is while raising two children by herself. Not long after she accepts a job as an author’s typist, a local maid is found murdered. With the police not moving fast enough to solve the crime, Minnie takes it upon herself to try and figure what happened.

This is the first book in a new series. Pretty cute. Felt like the book was paced pretty well. Always like it when the crime happens pretty early on rather than setting it up for most of the book and then you gotta rush to find the murderer. Definitely feels like there will be others in the series so there’s room for more character development. Didn’t feel like too much this go around. Just getting used to who the characters are. The narrator did a really good job! Thank you to NetGalley for this audio ARC!

Author, Emily Sullivan‘s foray into cozy historical mysteries is an overwhelming success in my opinion! Her first book in her new Minnie Harper mystery series, A Death on Corfu, combines a small town, mystery storyline with the quirky and fun vibes of PBS’s The Durrells in Corfu. (if you never watch the show – I highly recommend!)

In the series, Minnie Harper, a widow going on five years, an opportunity to up the manuscript for a visiting author on the aisle of Corfu shakes up her quiet life. Everything seems pretty standard as she works with mystery writer, Stephen Dorian, that is until they stumble upon a dead body, not that far from his rental… Minnie wants to see justice for the local woman who’s been murdered and Stephen can’t resist a mystery so they team up together to look deeper into this case and find themselves tangled up in a bigger mystery than they anticipated!

I enjoyed the mystery. They kept this book moving along, but I also really loved the character development of Minnie Harper coming to terms with her widowhood after five long years and rediscovering who she is and what she wants to do with herself and her family to move them out of the shadow of her husband‘s passing. And of course, since Emily Sullivan started off with historical romance, you know there’s some romantic tension between Minnie and Step! This one looks like it’s going to be one of those relationships that pushes and poles as more mysteries are solved in the series goes on, but I am eagerly anticipating seeing these two back together again in another adventure!

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Siobhan Waring, and found her voice to be a perfect match for this story. Her accent and voice work fit well with the characters and the setting, providing plenty of variety in the different characters voicing. The audiobook was easy to listen to, and the narration brought the story to life.

✨2.5 Rounded to 3 Stars✨

Minnie Harper is a widow living on Corfu in Greece when a mystery novelist comes to live next door. He offers her a job transcribing his latest novel and she is (big time) down. Unfortunately, after a quarrel, Minnie and Steven find themselves in their own cozy mystery. A girl has been murdered and the unlikely duo team up to try to find the motive and culprit of the murder.

This was bold underline italicized COZY. Low key Bridgerton meets Harriet the Spy, but a cute little historical fiction read. I think I also was dazzled by the title/theme because I am down for a Greece setting <3

Thank you NetGalley and Kensington Publishing for the Audiobook ARC ✨

I received this ARC from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.

This is the first book in the series. The book is a cozy read, but it lacked suspense for me. It was a very slow paced mystery and I figured out the killer from early. I needed a bit more action. I'm interested in learning more about the secrets Minnie, the main character, is hiding so looking forward to the rest of the series.

The narration was not my favourite and I recommend using another narrator for future works.

What a great first in series! I am a sucker for a Historical Cozy Mystery and this one was right on the mark.

A widow and a mystery author, a very unlikely pair, team up to solve the murder of a young woman in town. Suspicions, secrets, and painful pasts are brought forward giving several people motives; however there is one secret, a secret to change Minnie's life completely.

I look forward to much more from this series.

A widow recently moved to Corfu prior to losing her husband, is trying to keep her children and life afloat. A homicide author moves in next door to finish his novel. During this time, a young maid is found unalived & the police are not interested in solving the case, these two team up to figure out what happened.

I LOVED the side line of this book too, this mother realizes her children are gaining independence and she is unsure what to do as a female, not a mother or widow.
While there’s a cozy thriller vibe, I did not solve it myself until minutes before the plot unfolded in the story.

The narration was excellent. Siobhan does both the male and female and both are great!

Siobhan Waring narrates this story of young widow Minnie Harper living in Corfu in a slowly falling-down house with her teenage daughter and young son. When she finds the body of a young local housemaid, she finds herself investigating her death with taciturn mystery writer Stephen Dorian who’s hired her to help type his next book.

I found myself fully immersed in this book. It was well-paced and plotted and I found all my guesses wrong. Siobhan Waring has a soothing voice with clear enunciation to bring this book to life. However, I felt like she sounded way older than Minnie who is only thirty-three. Her voice just sounded like Minnie was in her late 40s and it kinda took me by surprise to be honest.

I adored the slow-burn chemistry between Minnie and Stephen, and how they challenge each other, freely speaking as equals. I loved that Stephen also revealed his vulnerabilities with Minnie and how he admires her independent spirit.

Emily Sullivan writes interesting, unconventional men and women against a backdrop of strict gender rules. This historical mystery with a subtle hint of romance really hit the spot. I cam now dying to read the next book because I am hooked on Minnie and Stephen.

Thanks to Tantor Audio and NetGalley for the ALC.

This was an interesting historical romance with mysterious and unexpected events throughout the story. The characters left you searching for clues along with them. Recombination got the cozy mystery readers.

The setting, time period and characters were idyllic. This was a great first book in a new series. I’ll definitely be reading more as the series is written. I was surprised by whom the murderer was and relived. I enjoyed most of the interaction between, Minnie, the widow and Stephan, the author. The ending prepares us for the next in the series. Great narrator.

I was blessed with n audio ARC and the opinions expressed are my own. Highly recommend.

I received an advanced copy of this audiobook for review. This is my own opinion.

First, the narrator was the perfect choice for this book! She did an excellent job.

This is definitely going into my favorites of the year! I mostly stay in my romance lane, but sometimes I venture out to dabble in other genres, and I am SO glad I did with this one because it was an absolute delight.
It’s reminiscent of a BBC mystery show, like if Death in Paradise was set at the turn of the century and the main character is a widow.

Minnie Harper is an English expat widow on the small Greek island of Corfu. She occasionally takes on secretarial work to support her two children. When a mystery author arrives and they have a bit of a Darcy/Lizzy at the ball moment, Minnie decides she doesn’t like him. But he needs a typist and she needs the work, so… but when a maid is murdered between their houses and the authorities don’t seem to care, they work together to solve the case.

I can already tell this will be the slowest of slow burn romances, even though Mr. Dorian is CLEARLY gone for Minnie. I loved this and couldn’t put it down. I am so eager for the next book in this series.

This light mystery with a hint of a potential romance will be perfect for fans of historical mysteries or fans of BBC light mystery shows.

Thanks to Tantor Audio and Netgalley for the ALC! This is in my yearly faves for sure.

I want to thank Netgalley and the author for gifting me the the audio version. I just have to say I absolutely loved this novel so much! This has got to be the best novel I have read in a long time. There was no cringy sex scenes, no cussing (just one part) and I loved how the author wrote the book. It was in the style of old classics from the turn of the century. The book was perfect length and didn't lag in any areas. Very witty writing in parts and I loved all the characters! I was fascinated with the plot and could not wait to find out who did it....and the reason behind the murder wasn't something cheesy or over the top. It was great! If you love a good old fashion Miss. Marple type murder mystery you will love this one! I would for sure read from this author again. I was so excited to see this will be part of a series! I cannot wait. Highly recommend! A MUST READ for the summer!

P.s. I loved the narrator, she did all the time period and characters beautifully.

A Death on Corfu is historical mystery with some romantic elements.

Sullivan is a great writer. The setting, characters, investigation, conclusion, and potential foreshadowing (🤞🤞🤞) were superb.

The first 60% was a bit slow but definitely picked up to the end!

I knew when I first saw the premise for this book I was going to love it. A historical cozy mystery set on a Greek Island? Yes, sign me up! And this didn't disappoint. Sullivan weaves a tale so intricate that it took me until the end to figure out whodunnit. She kept sending my mind in a million different directions and when the ending happened I was like "oh my gosh, yes! it had to be them!" Sullivan also brings in this subtle romance element and you can't help but root for the single mother FMC. The romance also ended on a bit of a cliffhanger so I definitely need to know what happens next!

I started reading this book on my kindle but then when I saw the audio available I requested it immediately. Siobhan Waring really brings this story to life. Waring captured Minnie's personality so well. I hope she continues to be the one to narratethe series.

A bit too slow for my taste, but still an interesting mystery.
I enjoyed A Death on Corfu for its setting and intriguing characters, there’s definitely potential here. However, I found myself wishing the story would move along a bit faster. The slow pacing made it harder for me to stay fully engaged, and it took away from the overall enjoyment. That said, the mystery itself was solid, and I’m curious to see where the series goes. If future installments pick up the pace, I’d be interested in following these characters further. 2.5

Thank you NetGalley and Tantor Audio for the chance to listen to this title in exchange for my honest opinion.

A Death on Corfu is the first book in the new Minnie Harper Mystery series by Emily Sullivan. It is a cozy murder mystery set in 1898, with both British and Greek characters. The book takes place on the Greek island of Corfu.

Quick Plot Summary: It's 1898, and Englishwoman Minnie Harper is a widow with two elementary-age children living on the Greek island of Corfu. She notices a handsome mystery author named Mr. Dorian move into a nearby residence, and takes a job as his literary typist. One day, Minnie stumbles upon the dead body of a female acquaintance, and takes it upon herself to investigate the suspected murder. Mr. Dorian joins her in her endeavors to find the murderer, but some of the clues could incriminate him and Minnie isn't sure who to trust. Can she solve the murder without jeopardizing her own safety? Can she rely on her intuition that Mr. Dorian is a good man?

My Impressions: This was a lovely start to a new series! I loved that Minnie is in her 30s and is a more mature main female character. She knows her own mind and is a lovable main character. The chemistry between Mr. Dorian and Minnie was great too. There are threads of romantic potential between the Minnie and Mr. Dorian which will likely be built upon in future books of the series. This novel/series reminds me of The Electra McDonnell Series by Ashley Weaver, except with a different timeframe and location. The ending does wrap up the murder mystery without cliffhangers, but leaves lots of potential for future developments and other mystery-solving efforts between Minnie and Mr. Dorian.

I took off one star because the interviews in the middle of the book that Minnie did to the different suspects felt a little boring and dragged on for me.

Notes on Narration: Siobhan Waring did an EXCELLENT job with the narration. The voices of each character are varied, and the primary voice for Minnie is a pleasant, posh English accent. The choice of narrator felt like a true representation of the character Minnie.

Content Considerations: No language or romantic scenes/interactions. (Note: I hope the author keeps this series without on-page sex for the future books in this series too! I think it will appeal to the audience who appreciate closed-door romance novels.)

Thank you to Tantor Audio and NetGalley for the complementary copy of this audiobook in exchange for my honest review. My review is my own opinion and is in no way influenced by the author or publisher.
