Thank you for the ALC copy of Chase the Dark. I think overall the book was solid but it should have been one that I read over listening to.

I needed a little more understanding of the magic and the daemons and how the world came about. Perhaps this was better understood if I read it. The narrators, unfortunately, were a distraction for me. The female narrator was great but the fact this book has two narrators for three different characters was really distracting for me. The two male characters had the same narrator and when listening it became sometimes hard to distinguish who I should be following and sometimes I confused one for the other. It wouldn’t not have been any trouble at all when reading as it is third person, but as an audio listener while multitasking it did make it harder to follow.

Overall it seemed like a solid start to a series but I certainly feel it needed more to it and had something missing, or perhaps just too short overall.

Hover 3 to a 3.5 star rating, I do wish there had been 3 narrators to my audiobooks. I like seeing each character that was followed to have a distinct voice to them.

Chase the Dark
Book 1: Steel & Stone
By Annette Marie
Narrated by Melissa Moran; Tim Paige
4 ⭐️

First: This is was good. It’s a solid YA urban-ish fantasy with a human/demon half breed, a demon/dragon shifter, and an incubus. It’s detailed but not weighed down. It has fast pacing and plenty of mystery. It’s a long series with 6 currently out (I have no idea if it’s done or ongoing) - audiobooks are currently in production. This audiobook was a fun listen. The multiple POVs were very easy to follow. I enjoyed both narrators equally and don’t have much else to note.

Second: I need this to be an adult why choose.

That is all.

Thank you NetGalley, Annette Marie, and Tantor audio for this audiobook ARC. 🐉

Okay so i should start this review by saying on netgalley its listed as General Fiction (Adult), Romance, Sci Fi & Fantasy. This is wrong! It's actually a YA which if I had known I would not have applied for it (i will add a note to publisher with my review as i think it will do better listed as what it is).

When our FMC turned out to be 17 and talking about hotness alot, i did a quick search on if its adult or YA! Even the authors site says YA.

So I've reviewed this with the view to those who like YA, not my own taste, as its not for me and I upped the audio speed.

Piper is our FMC who is 17 and she wants to be a Consul (think peace keeper between species/demons) however she has no magic and her dad who is in charge has no intention of allowing it. Due to his position they live at the consulate where a magical dangerous stone is kept. Long story shorts its stolen and she is blamed and on the run (this is not a spoiler its in the description). She is helped by two demons Ash and Lyre.

I think Ash and Lyre are the best characters in the book. They have good banter between the two of them and there is a scene where Piper helps Ash though a traumatic situation that was sweet.

The character development is really good, as well as the worldbuilding. You get to watch the three main characters come together. This is a YA style slow burn romance but the book itself is pretty fast paced so something is always happening!

I will be recommending this book to my niece who is 16 as I know she will love it!

The narration of the audio was well done and enjoyable. I liked both the male and female narrators. Readers were Melissa Morgan and Tim Paige.

Apparently this series is complete and this book released 2015, so maybe its been picked up or is just getting audio now. This series may get better as the FMC ages up as its 6 books. So if you do love it you can binge them all!

Dual narration- Melissa Moran & Tim Paige
As always I loved Tim Paige. Melissa was fantastic as well.

Great book. I enjoyed the storyline. The world building and depth was written well. Love the cover! It is the first thing that drew me to the book, then the narrator and finally the description got me. And this one didn’t disappoint.

I am invested and need to continue the series. Very well written and developed characters. The world building was great as well. If your a fan of fantasy genre definitely give this a try.

When is the next book coming out? This was such an addicting read/listen. The story was well developed, the characters were compelling and if you are listening to the audiobook the narrators were perfect for this story.

Thank you NetGalley for an audio ARC of the edited republished edition of Chase the Dark!

Oh my god. Apparently the entire Steel & Stone series is being rewritten which I both love and hate because this series is already perfect and because I hope this republication will bring new fans with their fantastic new covers!

Allow me to rave about this series for a moment. Chase the Dark is the first in a 6 book ya action fantasy romance series. We are introduced to our main characters (and villains) and get a bit of background on them while also being immediately plummeted into a whirlwind of change for our heroine.

I am a litfic and romance reader mostly.. this book is YA but also a little NA and very action packed. As someone who never reads or enjoys action scenes.. I was mind-boggled at how invested I was in what was actually going on! Annette Marie has an incredible ability to actually keep readers interested and engaged during fight scenes. I love her writing and her ability to keep you invested and on your feet is incredible.

For younger readers, I think this is a fantastic intro into urban fantasy. The books are short and the plot is heavily focused on. There is a romance and love story, and it's very much part of the plot, but it's also not taking up every single second of the book. We actually get to meet other, unrelated characters and learn about them. We have little adventures among the bigger ones, and there's lots of intrigue and curious things to learn about the world and magic as the book/series goes on. It's not particularly complex or deep. but there's a lot to be found in these books. They're simple, quick reads that had me kicking my feet and screaming!

For older readers. Ugh, you guys. I love this series so much. As a longtime romantasy reader, I have grown a bit bored of all the cliches and tropes that are guaranteed in every romantasy book now. This isn't romantasy, it's action fantasy romance, but the romance still hits, and I became so incredibly invested in every other thing going on in the story. Other characters, the plot, the drama... I am here for it all! All the Steel & Stone books are relatively short, so I highly recommend taking a few hours out of your day and committing to reading this because it's absolutely worth it! If you want to kick your feet and squeal and gasp and have FUN while reading, pick this one up!

The ARC I received for this book was the new audiobooks and although I don't particularly remember what the old audiobook sounded like, I loved this one just as much! The narrators were great (although I kinda hated the pronunciation of our villain's name) The pacing and quality was fantastic and the woman who narrated Piper was so engaged and portrayed her quirky, excited personality perfectly! Really brought the character to life!

This is my 3rd read of this book and I still love this series with absolute passion. It's fun, interesting and filled with plenty of heart-pounding moments that will keep you on your toes! The action is simple to follow and actually really fun to read! I love Annette Marie passionately and I'm sooo excited of the rerelease of the rest of these books! Cannot wait!!

This story was very fun and interesting. I'm looking forward to seeing how the series progresses. But the thing that really threw me off is.how is this series YA? Lyre is an incubus. Piper is going to end up with both men. The sexual tension was threw the roof but all we get is a kiss. The vibes of the book did not match a ya feel I'm not sure if the series gets spicier as we.go or not but I'm curious to see.

This was surprisingly really good!

Action from the get go!!

Piper is a consul apprentice trying to bridge the devise between demons acting as a mediator of sorts.
She is half human half demon, she is powerless so her father wraps her in bubble wrap.

An important meeting is taking place and piper is to stay away however something happens and goes wrong the consulet is in mayhem and she is thrusted with lyre (an incubus) and Ash (dragon).
To find out what’s happened to her dad and uncle and understand why the prefects and demons are now after her she. She has to rely on lyre and ash to help her understand what happened and what’s going on.

Piper is actually a great character she’s an apprentice and powerless but she is adamant she will make sure this doesn’t stop her and she will prove she is capable.

Lyre a hot as hell incubus who has a light hearted personality and a habit of letting his aphrodisiac power loose randomly. It’s hard to tell if he is interested in piper or that’s just his kind’s personality.

Ash, ahh quite angsty hot dragon boy ash. Yup his the most powerful, scary demon and not someone you cross. Around piper his walls have started dispersing and his real self is planning through.
Do I think he likes her, yup I do. Do I think he will do much about it. I think he already has without speaking words based on the last quarter of the book.

Narration was top notch Tim Paige is a great narrator I’ve listened to quite a few of his books and I automatically zone in when I hear him.
Melissa Morgan is another talent she was perfect!
These 2 together was just *chefs kiss*

Thank you netgalley and tantor audio for the arc in exchange for an honest review!

I can’t wait for book 2 narration!!

Really enjoyed listening to this story. Have read and enjoyed most of Annette Marie’s other series and have been waiting to read this one as I knew there was going to be an updated version. The story kept me engaged and I thought the narrators did a great job. I loved the cast of characters and the variety of creatures that featured throughout the book. Can’t wait to see what happens in the next book.
