Our protagonist is sent from living in Chicago with her mom to a small town to live with her grandma so her mom can take care of herself. Some readers will understand that mom is entering rehab after addiction issues, but the story remains gentle and child-appropriate. This is a mostly realistic fiction coming-of-age story with a small dash of magical realism and very endearing characters
