Very informative and interesting. I learned a lot about wolves that I never knew before. I feel like this is a great introduction to more of the facts of wolves for little ones. As well, the drawings themselves were great. It really showed the story and were a great representation of the story.

really cute book to learn more about wolves! Perfect read for younger kids who loves dogs, wolves, animals in general, etc.

While I've never been to Yellowstone, I have visited Alaska's Denali Park and can testify that the artist perfectly captured the vastness and grandeur of our wild places. You feel small in such places and, quite frankly, I'm not sure it isn't a reminder we occasionally need of how tiny we are in the grand scope of nature. Toss in that wolves do roam freely in my general area and this book was a natural for me. It follows a pack of wolves from basically the birth of a litter until they're grown and moving out on their own. Even better, we're also introduced to the flora and fauna as well as the other animals that surround the wolves' range.
It's a beautifully done, well thought out book. The artist has painted the vast beauty of the wolves' home largely in soft pastels, some of which almost seem to glow. Based on the many photos and books of Yellowstone that I've seen, it seems to realistically capture the area as well as the playfulness of the pups. I liked that rather then simply black print on white, the information is nicely arranged in various colorful graphs, boxes, and sidebars throughout. It makes it easy to follow, which simply going straight through the account or randomly flipping about and stopping when something catches your eye and, trust me, there's a lot to see. Readers can enjoy trying to spy whatever other things they can see, ranging from bears to lovely flowers and birds.I also appreciated that rather than toss in a plea not to litter, the author went with "a picture is worth a thousand words" mantra, showing wolf pups playing with a plastic bottle, for instance, with items that have been observed as "wolf toys" ranging from plastic water bottles and cans to human clothing items. I should also note that while it's made clear wolves eat prey, it's handled nicely, without dwelling on it. In fact, it uses that moment to subtly show competition among other animals for food and mentions why bears are such voracious eaters.
Although aimed at independent reading aged children, adults should find this book equally interesting and informative. It would definitely make a lovely gift for animal lovers and a great addition to many teachers' reading/research shelves. The fact that it shows us the full picture, so to speak, covering nearly a year and encompassing other life in the area should make it applicable in different areas. There are some color photos at the end, I should also note, identified with the names rangers/researchers have given that particular wolf and more info on both wolves and ways children can help protect them. There's a map that identifies wolves' general ranges, too. Thanks #StoreyPublishing and #NetGalley for allowing me this early peek at a lovely book focused on an animal that fills me with awe. That said, I had to chuckle this afternoon when, while walking, my not-so-wolfish (though she had a cute howl as a pup) corgi mix demonstrated scent marking for me. Grin.

This is a beautiful book. It follows the story of a wolf pack in Yellowstone park over the course of a year. Full of lots of facts about the wolves as well as the other animals and plants that are found there. Perfect for children looking to understand wolf behaviour. My 8 year old son said this book is really good, he loved the fact it looks at the whole year, and he would love more books like this following different animals.

I am throughly impressed with Yale’s What Goes on inside a Wolf Pack, but, the language is inaccessible for elementary. Very few words are clarified or defined and even stronger readers will likely struggle. I teach middle school science and this entire book works within several of of our standards, so I especially LOVE how informative this is, including using scientific names and discussing pack hierarchy including scat and spraying as territorial marking. I do wish they had talked more about the yearlings going off to establish their own packs, other than the short page - are there conflicts with offspring packs for example? How is genetic diversity affected or is it bottleneck especially in areas with limited territory?
Overall I really loved this and the pictures were very well drawn. The only change I would really want that would benefit me to use this as a classroom resource would be to include a vocabulary section. Otherwise this was perfect.

I loved everything about this story. It was very informative on what happened in the wild with a wolf pack. My 7 year old sons favorite animal is a wolf sp he especially loved this story as well. As a 2nd grade teacher I would use this story in teaching about animals and the circle of life.

What Goes on inside of a Wolf Pack by Kathleen Yale was much detailed than I anticipated. I liked that it followed the wolves over a period of time and included a lot of facts that I even learned as an adult. The illustrations are nice. Can be enjoyed by all ages, but I think an older child would enjoy the detail of the book most. I received an eARC from Storey Publishing through NetGalley. All opinions are 100% my own.

Great book all around! I do think that this book veered a little bit on the "too long" side, but that, in my opinion, just means that young readers will be able to read this in more than one sitting and savor the "story" more. Additionally, even though this book was longer than your average kids' book, it was written and designed in such a way that the reader is able to easily stay engaged throughout. It's so impressive that the author managed to find this perfect and delicate balance. As for the information, writing, and illustrations: impeccable! This book is perfect in every way; bravo!!

I’ve always loved moments where I can use the phrase, “you learn something new every day.”
For Kathleen Yale’s What Goes on Inside a Wolf Pack, I actually had a few of those moments when I wasn’t expecting it. I already knew a decent amount about wolves and their pack habits, in part due to a student’s interest in the subject and our deciding to bring in multiple wolf books to keep them interested in the instruction. That alone, of course, made me really excited to see that there was new information here.
In general, I would say that this is a pretty brilliant book overall. It’s definitely the sort of children’s book you flag as for more advanced readers—or at the very least, you’re going to have to read it to them. But there’s a ton of great knowledge about wolves throughout this book and even knowledge about the other animals that they typically encounter. It follows the entire story of a singular wolf pack, describing the majority of their lifespan, at least from birth into adulthood.
The artwork throughout is absolutely gorgeous and very lifelike in nature—it’s less cartoony and more academic, which is another point toward this book being a little more geared to older kiddos, especially as some of the artwork gets into hunting and feeding. Overall, I was quite pleased with this book and will definitely be recommending and using it in the future.

What Goes on Inside a Wolf Pack left me completely captivated! This book isn’t just about wolves—it’s about connection, cooperation, and survival in one of the most misunderstood animal families.
Kathleen Yale does an amazing job of explaining complex behavior in a way that feels both accessible and exciting. I learned so much without ever feeling like I was reading a non-fiction book. The writing is clear and engaging, with just the right balance of facts and storytelling to keep me turning pages.
What really took this book to the next level for me were the illustrations. They’re absolutely stunning—detailed, expressive, and filled with movement. Most of the book reads like a graphic novel, which will be incredibly PERFECT for those older kids who are already graphic novel-obsessed!
Even as an adult, I felt like I was being let in on the secret lives of wolves. I think kids, teens, and grown-ups alike will find something to love in this book. It’s a perfect blend of science and wonder—and it gave me a whole new appreciation for how wolf families work together. Thank you, NetGalley!

This is a great non-fiction book about wolves, specifically a pack living in Yellowstone. The animals' hunting feeding, reproductive, and den life are all portrayed with lovely illustrations, and informative text. Each paragraph is short, and there are several bunches of text interspersed about the page so that the reader can turn to a particular section if they want or read all in one sitting. On the right side of every few pages there are a list of vocabulary words with the image.
I have two sons who are very interested in wolves, and this book was right up their alley. I recommend this book for anyone who likes animals and science, non-fiction picture books, and easy to understand vocabulary. This book is perfect for school libraries as well as public libraries.
