Shot in the Dark by Janet Whyte is a heartwarming, well-written narrative that highlights the struggles of being in middle school boy and how going blind may impact his dream of playing Goalball. Micah struggles with the regular middle school madness along with losing his eyesight. The story elements are well defined and relatable. I enjoyed the fact that Micah is a child of color living in Canada. His family is very supportive but Micah is not always as receptive to their help. He wants to be independent but can he really be that way while losing his eyesight? The struggles of middle school and pending disability is real.
Ms. Whyte did an exceptional job of factoring in race, disabilities, and puberty. Children of middle grades will definitely enjoy and learn a few life lessons through Shot in the Dark.

Being that I've actually played goalball and have worked with kids who play regularly - I was so excited to see that this book highlighted a sport that most kids won't be familiar with!

Impressed with this book as I've never read the author before. Really engaging diverse read that should have no issues with finding itself on hundreds of library shelves. 5 stars!
