Breaking Awake by P.E. Moskowitz examines the complex relationship between mental health and substance use and abuse. After experiencing an incident in which he almost perished, he had a nervous breakdown. After these incidents, he began to explore why and how people become dependent on drugs, both legal and illegal. The themes explored include: happiness, the meaning of life, dealing with stress, and resiliency. These themes are explored in a nationwide journey, showcasing the lives of those that have experienced drug use and abuse. While an important part of the narrative, I found myself getting bored by the historical context of the book. However, this would be an important component for students or those that are studying this phenomenon. I much preferred the vignettes provided that ranged from those that take prescription psychiatric medications (SSRI’s) to those engaged in heroin use. This book was interesting in that it starts as a personal exploration, but it segways into an exploration of a current societal issue.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the advance review copy in exchange for my review.
