As a huge fan of Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child’s Agent Pendergast novels, I went into this book expecting to enjoy it. However, I was surprised to learn it’s already the fourth installment in the series, which may have impacted my experience. Without the context of the first three books, I found it harder to connect with the story and characters.
Jeremy Logan, the protagonist, didn’t resonate with me in the same way Pendergast does. Logan comes across as a bit too sanctimonious for my taste, which made it difficult to fully invest in his journey. The pacing also felt uneven—the story starts off quite slowly but ramps up to breakneck speed by the end, which made the flow feel somewhat disjointed.
That said, the writing itself is solid, and the action sequences are thrilling. While this particular book wasn’t my favorite, I can see it appealing to many readers, especially those who’ve followed the series from the beginning. Perhaps my expectations were simply too high, but for fans of fast-paced action and intricate plots, this is still a worthwhile read.
