Would you take a life for your dog? The main character is like a female version of John Wick. When her dog becomes ill she gets an offer she can’t refuse. Life saving money but, you have to take a life. Twisty and fun.

This book is seriously full of twists and turns! Chalked full of backstabbing, cheating, lying, and revenge for the win. Kim is an unassuming server who wants nothing more to ensure her dog lives a long and healthy life (isn't that what we all want?). Sure, she has a sordid past, but who doesn't? The lengths she will go to ensure her pup, Murphy, gets the treatment he needs is nothing short of murder. As the assassination evening goes awry, Kim is left with far more questions than answers. The rest of the novel untangles who knows what, who has it out for who, and how far everyone is willing to go out of pure spite. I recommend this book! Thank you to #NetGalley and #HighBridgeAudio for the ARC

Their Double Lives by Jaime Lynn Hendricks will make you wonder who's who?
"Kim works as a waitress at a fancy New Jersey country club. She is desperate to find the money for a life-saving operation for her dog. She gets contacted by a mysterious person known only as The Stranger. They want Kim to poison a person at the club. The person targeted is an old boyfriend of Kim's and she can't go through with it. instead his fiance dies at the table. Kim must peel back the layers to find out what really happened."
This is a dual-timeline story. It opens with the death in the country club restaurant and then fills in the backstory. No one is who they appear to be. Hendricks keeps you guessing until the end. There are rich people behaving badly (imagine that) Hendricks makes her characters desperate and also shows how immense wealth can change someone. The ending works (although it's a little vague) but you can easily fill in the blanks.
Emma Love does a nice job with the audio, especially the obnoxious rich couple and Kim's desperation and really all of the character's emotions.
Another good story from Jaime Lynn Hendricks.

Without a doubt, the shining star of this book is Murphy, the golden doodle. His urgent need for surgery has put owner Kim Valva in a vulnerable position.
Some unknown Stranger has been dropping off burner phones and depositing cash and other paraphernalia in strategic locations. The goal is to have Kim profit from delivering a poison pill to an unknown club member while she is serving in the dining room.
Things start to go sideways when that member is her neighborhood boy ex -- with a sparkly, new identity and a glamourous girlfriend named PJ Walsh to match. Pandemonium results when PJ dies at dinner. In the midst of the melee, Kim disposes the incriminating substances. Now what?
To find out what really happened, Jaime Lynn Hendricks takes us back in time to show us PJ's story. Much of the book alternates between "Kim - Now" and "PJ - Then" chapters with a few interludes from other characters to add juicy details.
I mostly listened to this one. Emma Love did a fabulous job bringing this story to life. Thank you to HighBridge Audio and NetGalley for an audio ARC in exchange for an honest review.

In the first chapter we learn that Kim's beloved dog (and best friend), Murphy, needs a life-saving surgery. Oh my, pull at my heart strings! Yes, let's get Murphy his surgery! What do we need to do?! Kim works at the country club and all she needs to do is put a pill in a club member's drink. Problem is, this is a new member and she knows the guy - Tony, her ex-boyfriend. Dang it, now Murphy isn't going to get his surgery. This is heartbreaking! Even more heartbreaking, the ex-boyfriend's new fiance, PJ Walsh, ends up dying. OK, now we have a mystery to solve! But really, I need Murphy to get his surgery! Their Double Lives is told in multiple POVs, and in both the past and the present. We do get to hear from PJ. I admit I fell head over heals for PJ from the moment we first went back in time to her meet up with Anthony (AKA Tony, Kim's ex-boyfriend - are you keeping up here?). PJ is 22, intelligent and full of delicious, snarky comments about Anthony. Meanwhile in the present we find out how Kim is making progress finding the real killer (and getting a surgery for Murphy!). I really liked this story. There was nothing in it that surprised me, but I liked Kim, PJ, and Matt (PJ's best friend), and of course I was totally invested to make sure the dog is saved. I'm making a lot of the dog, who is a very small part of this story, but he is memorable and I loved this angle as a motivation aspect for a character. It certainly worked for me as the listener! I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Emma Love who did a fantastic job at bringing PJ to life! This is a binge-worthy, enjoyable read.
Thank you NetGalley and HighBridge Audio for the ALC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

This story had soooo many twisted tales and everybody was out to get everyone else. If I could sum it up in a sentence, I’d say “The epitome of revenge is best served cold!” Kim, PJ and Tony’s stories weave together in shocking ways, & the secrets and lies of these seemingly ordinary people start to unravel. The dual POVs and with past and present perspectives laid the foundation for a good story. It was engaging, well paced, drawing you deeper into a story where no one is entirely innocent and everyone has something to hide. The characters are flawed in believable ways, as the lies & deception continued to be revealed as the chapters continued.
Overall a gripping read that I would recommend to any fan of psychological thrillers. I listened to the audiobook and truly enjoyed the narration. Thank you RBMedia, Thriller Book Lovers: The Pulse and NetGalley for this advanced reader copy. All opinions are my own.

Emma Love did a fantastic job with the narration on this book! She was clear and concise and handled all the characters like a professional! This book had so many twists and turns it literally had my head spinning! Certain parts I had to go back to listen to just to make sure I had everything straight in my head. If you’re looking for a super complex psychological thriller with very detailed characters, give this book a try!

Told from multiple perspectives and multiple timelines, this had plenty of twists and turns and just enough tension to keep the attention of even avid psych thriller readers like me!
I loved the unlikeable characters and couldn't wait to discover the identity of The Stranger. And I needed to know Murphy was going to be okay!!
Thank you to Highbridge Audio and Netgalley for gifting me a copy. It is my pleasure to write an honest review.

This is a classic whodunit. Fast paced and gripping. Great narrator. So full of twists that even if you're sure you've figured it out, you're still left second guessing yourself until the end. It's a tangled web of lies and deceit. When everyone has a motive to kill, who can you trust?
This is a new author for me, looking forward to reading some of her other work.
Thanks to Netgalley and Highbridge Audio for this ARC.

This book is told from present and past POV. In the present, Kim is a waitress at a swanky club and is offered an opportunity to make a ton of money and get her life back together. The offer was made by “the stranger”. All she has to do is slip a pill into a drink that will kill someone.
The problem? That someone happens to be her ex boyfriend from high school that is now a super successful adult worth millions. He’s attending with his fiance, and Kim just can’t bring herself to do it, but somehow PJ, the fiance, gets poisoned and Kim is left wondering, who wanted both of them dead ?
The past perspective is from PJ, who was running a con of her own to get Tony to fall for her. The story unravels with who is all connected, who is telling the truth, and Kim is left trying to make it all make sense.
Nice popcorn thriller, many twists and turns, fast paced ! My favorite types of thrillers !

This mystery thriller kicks off with an intensity that keeps your heart racing and the pace doesn’t slow down. The narrative is told through multiple points of view and alternates between then and now, creating a complex storyline that demanded my full attention, especially with so many characters. This revenge story is packed with lies, deceit and murder as well as non-stop action, suspense and wild twists.
The narration made the story even more compelling.
Thank you to the publisher/author for the opportunity to listen to this complimentary advanced copy. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.

There's a genre of thriller/suspense novels that I've come to discover known as the "popcorn' thriller. It evokes a feeling of being in a movie theatre on the edge of your seat feeling a little bit of disbelief about where the plot is going but buckling up for the ride because it's fun. This audiobook gave me that popcorn thriller vibe. Right from the start, the main character Kim tells us that she just got out of a serious relationship with a cheating boyfriend and her dog needs a $10,000 surgery to remove a tumor. Sad story to say the least but then something occurs out of the blue and she's been contacted by an unknown stranger who is willing to pay her (you guessed it) $10,000 to put a poison into the drink of a man she doesn't know at the country club she works at in order to kill him. She would do anything for her dog even something so out of character for her as this until she discovers the man is actually an old boyfriend from high school that goes by a variation of his name back then.
She decides she can't go through with it and then ends up witnessing the poisoning of this man's girlfriend. The plot thickens and the train has left the station. What a thrill ride to hear the narrator go between Kim in the present, Poppy Jane (PJ) in the past and eventually a few chapters of Tony/Anthony past and present. Twisty and somewhat predictable but also delicious in the who's double crossing who. I think the narration really made this story come to life and highly recommend this version

This has such an original plot; -in desperation to save her dog’s life, our protagonist Kat agrees to poison a stranger for cash. And with that Hendricks adds in a jist, one very important detail is left out before Kat accepted the deal. Uh oh. With twists and turns, lies, secrets and hijinks ensuing, this kept me guessing to the very end. And just who is The Stranger?! It’s fast moving with revenge, multi POV’s and dual timelines, the double-lives, and PJ’s nefarious agenda, all kept me highly invested in finding out the end result.. and the end.. fantastic! A great popcorn thriller too good to pass by! 5 stars — Pub. 5/20/25

Many thanks to NetGalley, Penzler Publishers | Scarlet, and High Bridge Audio for gifting me both a digital and audio ARC of the latest thriller by Jaime Lynn Henrdricks, with the audio perfectly narrated by Emma Love. All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4.5 stars rounded up!
Kim is desperate to come up with money to get her dog life-saving surgery, so when an anonymous caller promises her money to kill someone, she decides to go ahead. But on the night it’s supposed to happen, instead of the mark dying, it’s his fiancé who is dead at the table. But Kim did nothing, so just exactly what is happening?
This was such a twisty thriller, told from the POV of both Kim and PJ from different timelines. Best go into it with as little info as possible, so that you best enjoy it. The characters felt real – their motivations, their feelings – even though some aren’t likeable in the least. The plot was perfectly planned out and I suspected pretty much everyone and was so surprised at the end. I mostly listened to the audiobook and loved the narration – I could feel the snark! Be sure to add this one to your summer TBR!

Their Double Lives by Jamie Hendricks is a fast-paced, twisty thriller that proves everyone has a secret—and some are more dangerous than others. The flawed, compelling characters and steady suspense kept me hooked. A few parts felt rushed, but overall it’s a gripping read for fans of domestic suspense.
Thank you NetGalley & HighBridge Audio for the ARC!

3.5 / 5 stars
Country club waitress Kim Valva would do anything for her beloved dog, Murphy – but his life-saving surgery comes with a price tag she can’t afford. When a mysterious figure known only as The Stranger offers her ten thousand dollars to slip an untraceable poison into a club member’s drink, Kim feels like she has no choice.
She’s no killer, but she’s desperate. But when the target turns out to be her ex-boyfriend, and his fiancée ends up dead instead, Kim finds herself pulled into a tangled web of double identities, deadly plots, and deeply buried secrets.
Their Double Lives is a fast-paced, twisty thriller that kept me engaged, even though I correctly guessed many of the twists ahead of time. The book offers plenty of intrigue and the kinds of layered plotting that make domestic suspense so compulsively readable. I appreciated the brisk pacing and the puzzle-box structure of the narrative, which kept the momentum moving even when I found myself a step ahead of the reveals.
Where I struggled, however, was with the characters. I never quite connected with their motivations, and some of the emotional stakes felt a bit thin – especially for a story that leans heavily into messy relationships and betrayal. That said, the narration by Emma Love is a strong match for the story’s tone, bringing energy to the dialogue and helping differentiate the character voices. Even a strong performance, though, couldn’t entirely bridge the emotional distance I felt from the characters.
Overall, this is a solid, entertaining thriller perfect for readers who enjoy cat-and-mouse games, unreliable narrators, and stories where everyone seems to have something to hide. While it didn’t quite deliver the emotional impact I look for in this genre, it still offers a satisfying escape into the world of twisted secrets and carefully constructed lies.

Audiobook
Kim works as a server at a wealthy country club when she is presented with an opportunity to help murder a member for a large sum of money. She is set to go through with it when a different member dies. Why? Who did it? Who was behind the original request?
Told in multiple points of view - Hendricks does not wait long to let you know not everything or everyone is who they seem. There are twists on top of twists. However, I felt the reasons for Kim even considering getting involved were very far-fetched.

Murder, lies, deception. Who is a villain? Who is a victim? Is anyone truly one or the other?
This one is hard to get into without spoiling, but there are plenty of twists and turns. And a whole lot of sketchy characters.
Emma Love narrates the audiobook. It was paced a bit slow for me- I had to speed it up more than my typical speed.
I received an advance audio copy in exchange for an honest review.

This book had me from the jump. What a fun, twisty, interesting novel. I loved the way Hendricks developed these characters because I was completely engaged in finding out what happened next with them. I found myself rooting for everyone, even those who were doing very bad things. I will absolutely be seeking out more work by Jamie Lynn Hendricks, this was the perfect twisty mystery for summer.

When I say that this book was phenomenal and I finished it and maybe two days that is a serious statement. The narrator did a great job with the different voices of each character.
I was not expecting the twists and turns that it took, but they were very well welcomed. There were moments when I found myself laughing out loud, and there were other moments when my jaw was on the floor.
10 out of 10 would recommend, 100% would read another book by Jamie Lynn Hendricks.
