3.5 Stars. This was a cute, cozy love story that is great for YA audiences. Not quite spooky, but dripping with Halloween ambiance, I found the characters to be sweet and the story to be satisfying if not a tad predictable. I wouldn’t necessarily rush to recommend this to adult friends, but would definitely recommend it to any high schoolers I know!

This was such a good, quick read to kick off the Halloween season! The title and the adorable cover told me just about everything I needed to know and I was already hooked. I expected something really light and fluffy and did get that, but also got some bitesize pieces of wisdom I was surprised by.

I absolutely loved Darcy and Anya and felt giggly every time they interacted on the page. Also, another thing I was caught off guard by, was how much I enjoyed the side characters! Kyle and Grace specifically hold a place in my heart.

I appreciated that the book was so easy to get through and had fun the whole time, but I do think I would've appreciated staying with the characters a little longer, especially at the end. It felt like some scenes wrapped up before they needed to and I could've stood being there for a page or two longer.

Overall, I highly recommend for some witchy hijinks and small-town good vibes! I'll be on the lookout for more from this author.

Oh this was absolutely precious. Such a solid cozy Halloween YA sapphic romance. The romance between Anya and Darcy was sweet, but in true Morrissey style, the absolute best part was watching the individual characters grow and change as people. There was so much here in their family relationships and friendships that made Fableview feel like a real community and I adored getting to see all those different types of love in a YA novel.

The cozy magical elements were perfect and didn’t take up too much of the story to make this feel like it was too fantasy heavy. It was atmospheric, fast-paced, and full of cute autumn-dripped moments that you would want in a seasonal read.

I love that queerness was very normal in their community and the conflict did not center around Darcy and Anya not being accepted by their families for being queer. That made this story so refreshing and it allowed for other themes that teens would also find relatable to take center stage.

If you’re looking for something quick and lighthearted with good humor and a sweet, sapphic teen romance this upcoming Halloween season, this is for you!

I had SUCH a blast reading this book. I thought the main characters were super cute but the side characters really shone. They were so hilarious and I wanted more of them!! Overall this is a super cute, quick, Halloween sapphic YA romance, though if I admit I wish it were a little longer. With how short it is, I feel like we didn't get into the mc's as much as we could have and definitely wanted to get to know them a little better.

Definitely recommend to those wanting to celebrate spooky season without the horror.

Thank you NetGalley for the e-ARC to review!

Anya has always been a little recluse, constantly moving and living with different relatives throughout her life to be mentored before joined ng the family coven at 18. But, she's scraping to find a mortal protector before her 18th birthday.
Darcy, a born and raised Fableview local, has had her entire life planned out for her by her parents who have kept the towns Halloween traditions alive for years. She is itching to try something new, even if that's as simple as going to college out of state. After Darcy reconnects with Anya, sparks fly and they both realize the other might have the answers to the problem they're looking for... But not in the ways they think.

I honestly thought this book was a cute Halloween YA novel! I wasn't quite sure what to expect going into it, but I was pleasantly surprised to find a beautiful story of two girls falling for each other and helping each other achieve their goals in ways that they never considered in the first place. We definitely need more joyful LGBTQ+ stories like this one!

Also, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the GORGEOUS cover art of this book, massive props to the artist. It's definitely one of the things that first drew me into this story.

Darcy and Anya were so cute! I wish I got a whole series based on the town. The pacing was a lil off but the humor was super fun. I love a lil light gay halloween read to kick off the season👻

This was the literal heart of Halloween and fall in general rolled up into a cozy little book. I adored Fableview and all it's residents and Halloween traditions and events. It was so simple and cute and fun and I had a great time with it. Previously by Bridget Morrissey I read That Summer Feeling which as the title suggests, gave me all the summer feelings, so Im not surprised to see that Bridget did it again with Everything she does is magic in a completely different season. Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC copy, all opinions are my own!

Darcy and Anya were such fun characters and they had real and valid worries in my opinion. Darcy struggling with wanting to leave home and find herself, but not wanting to crush her parents and all the expectations they have for her taking over their Halloween empire and their paint store. Anya had issues with her coven and worrying about what she would do when her initiation happened and she didn't have a named protector to be able to join her coven as an official Doyle witch. They complimented each other well and made an active effort to reduce the stress of these issues for each other and I thought their romance was really sweet. It's also fun because Darcy is a literal ray of sunshine (At least on the outside, it's not all sunshine and rainbows on the inside we learned) And Anya is the brooding mysterious type (Of course with her brighter softer side) so if you like grumpy sunshine, this is for you. All the side characters were surprisingly pleasant and enjoyable and they all played a role in the story that really mattered. I really just had a great time with this and I think it's perfect for the upcoming halloween season. It is literally the embodiment of live, laugh, love halloween. It gives you all those cozy warm and fuzzy feelings inside and I'm excited to see this hit shelves soon.

We finally hit a little bit of a cold snap here and it finally felt like fall enough to read this book. Everything She Does is Magic has the perfect vibes to kick off spooky season. In the middle of their town’s highly organized month-long Halloween festival, Darcy and Anya are slowly falling for each other while growing into adulthood. Both face unique challenges as they determine the paths they will take- Darcy is determining if she will follow her parent’s dream of taking over their painting studio or attend college out of state. Anya needs to find a mortal protector to become a full member in her family’s coven. This book has amazing “very social golden retriever x shy black cat” vibes in an adorable first sapphic love setting.

*Possible Spoilers*

The premise of “Everything She Does is Magic” is cute. Bridget Morrissey developed a fun book concept. Unfortunately, it just didn’t execute well. The plot and character development happens less by natural progression, and more just because the book says it does. There’s a lot of telling, and not much letting the characters speak for themselves. Everything just kind of felt half-baked and unfinished.

Anya and Darcy had potential to be an interesting, opposites attract duo. Anya being the loner witch and Darcy being the bubbly human. To make that dynamic work, the characters actually have to get to know each other first. One sort-of conversation doesn’t an intimate relationship make. We don’t really see the two hang out just for themselves. They hang out because of commitments to other people, or because Anya actively needs something from Darcy.

Darcy kind of annoyed me. While both main characters had oh-woe-is-me syndrome, Darcy’s felt more whiny. She had a tendency to not consider other people’s side of the story, but got mad when they didn’t instantly understand her perspective. She gets mad at Anya for lying about why she approached Darcy, which granted, not a good foundation for a friendship, but she doesn’t think about the fact that if Anya didn’t befriend a human, she would be exiled from her community and family. Given that the main bonding point for both girls is the fact that neither wants to disappoint her family, I would have hoped that Darcy would be more understanding. Lying can be a dealbreaker, but at least consider where it’s coming from before blowing up at someone in a situation similar to yours.

Anya, weirdly enough, had the most self-growth with Darcy’s best friend, Grace. Anya and Grace both understand what it’s like when no one bothers to look under the facade. Grace misjudges Anya in the beginning, but apologizes and does better later on. Anya builds her self-confidence with magic by doing a haunted-house takeover with Grace. Anya stands up to her family by saving Grace’s life, and in doing so, she lays some of her magic-related trauma to rest. She and Grace have more development than Anya and Darcy.

I quite liked the brief glimpses we got of witch culture in this book. Anya being passed around her extended family to widen her magic repertoire is interesting. The generational impact on magic was alluded to, but not really explored. There’s a mention of how in Anya’s family, mothers and their first-born children usually have complimenting powers. I would’ve loved to see how that can tip or balance the familial scale. Familial traditions and generational grudges also play a huge role in witch lore. More exploration and world-building in relation to witches and magic would have been cool.

This is small, but I’d still like to mention it: the inaccurate book cover. The fact that Darcy is shorter than Anya is brought up more than once. At one point, Darcy has to go on tiptoes to kiss Anya. Yet the cover shows Anya being the shorter of the two. It’s not a big deal, but it is an inconsistency.

Even though I have a few Bridget Morrissey books on my TBR, this is the first one I’ve read.

I really enjoyed the character development of both Anya and Darcy. I think they were really cute together. I enjoyed their strive for change within their environment and themselves but not in their partners.

My favorite scene was the apple bobbing competition and what came after, I thought it was so adorable.

I loved that by the end of the book, it felt like Anya and her family had fully integrated into the community and had a full support system within their neighbors. I loved how the dynamic between characters grew as the book progressed, and how we got to know a little about the side characters like Kyle and Grace.

There are so many sapphic books about Christmas, I loved reading a sapphic book about Halloween.

The book felt lighthearted but held such deep meaning. I can’t wait to pick up the next Bridget Morrissey book!

4.5 ⭐ (leaning more towards 4.75)

This book was fantastic. It had all the elements of a perfect YA romance. It was so cute, very funny, and made me a little emotional.

The characters in this book are so cute. They're all really well done, I cared about them and really wanted everything to work out. They were also quite funny. Anya especially is very funny; I laughed out loud so many times while reading this.

The plot is very good. It did start out a little slow—maybe the first ten percent or so—but it picked up pretty quickly, and I ended up not being able to put the book down.

This YA book is a lovely fall read, perfect for Halloween lovers and queer romance fans alike.

A witchy fall romance set in small town anywhere, the story switches between our two main characters, one who is ... actually a witch. Not too spicy, but definitely enough longing to fuel a quality romance read with lots of nostalgia for corn mazes and haunted houses and costumes galore. Perfect for the first chilly nights of fall!

Everything She Does Is Magic is the perfect combination of a cozy, nostalgic Halloween atmosphere and a coming-of-age love story!
Set in the cozy, spooky, small town of Fableview, one of our main characters, Darcy, and her parents help to maintain the town’s witchy and whimsical reputation by running their art shop and participating heavily in town events, especially during Fall & Halloween!
Darcy herself has always been a skeptic, always seeing the “trick” behind the curtains, that is, until she meets Anya. Anya is new to town and keeps to herself; however, when her coven and family’s traditions require her to have a friend, she says the first name that comes to mind, Darcy.
The girls set out to help each other throughout the story and discover that there is always more to someone’s story than meets the eye.
This story perfectly encapsulates the nervous and exciting energy felt when getting to know someone new and how that journey can reflect a lot of self-discovery. The plot included so many relatable challenges that Anya & Darcy had to navigate, providing the reader with a feeling of understanding and heart-touching moments. Reading this book felt like reliving a nostalgic Halloween night; the descriptions and nods to Halloween traditions were so well placed throughout the story.

This book is more of a cozy read than a magical witchy spooky story. I wanted more magic and a bigger plot than a normal kid college independence. The romance was adorable when it got to the apple picking moment.
Too cozy for me.

This was such a cute quick read. I loved the cozy witchy vibes that this book gave me and even more I loved seeing our two main characters, Darcy and Anya, find themselves and each other. This was such a feel good book and I truly needed it in my life.

This is absolutely adorable!! So sweet, so cozy, so cute. The dynamic between the two main characters is so silly; Darcy thinking Anya is too cool and aloof to notice anyone else, all while Anya had secretly been in love with Darcy from the very start. That whole "X fell first, but Y fell harder" trope? That's literally Anya and Darcy.
I also really liked the usage of the side characters. At first I worried they would all be one dimensional, particularly Darcy's circle at school. But the most prominent of her friends had actual developments that contributed to keeping the plot going, and made them feel more human.

The relationship between Darcy and Anya progresses very quickly and it's a quick jump from having never once having had a proper conversation with eachother to mutual infatuation. Anya had a previously established crush on Darcy from the beginning, but Darcy had went from having a rather neutral opinion on Anya (vs. Everyone else thinking Anya's weird or scary) to being her #1 defender after seeing her smile literally once. I don't blame her honestly.

I will also note that stakes are rather low, or at least it just seemed so because Darcy was the only one who seemed to outwardly panic about what her potential consequences could be if she chooses to leave her family legacy behind to go to college elsewhere. Anya's stakes had seemed much more dire - if she failed to complete her coven initiation then she would become stripped of her powers for good and must learn to live as a mortal. But about 1/4 of the way through she was pretty much done mentally preparing for that to be the case and wasn't all that off put at the idea of being a normal human. But again, this book is explicitly marketed as a cozy read, so nothing was ever that serious anyway.

This is a super cute read to get you in the mood for spooky season! It's meant to bring a little comfort - and what it's meant to do, it does perfectly. If you like sapphic stories, I highly recommend this one!

five stars!! whimsical, witchy and wonderful! this was a wholesome y/a book with an immaculate cosy vibe, perfect for autumn and reading under a duvet with a hot drink! i can’t stop putting exclamation marks!

the first thing that drew me in with this book when i was browsing netgalley was definitely the cover. i mean have you seen it?! gorgeous. then i saw that it was sapphic and featured witches and i was hooked. and it definitely did not disappoint. i mean i’ve been in a major reading slump for months - it’s the least i’ve read for like 7 years so it was really nice to start reading this and just feel content.

i don’t know, this is definitely not the most coherent review i’ve ever posted; but if you’re looking for something lighthearted to pick up then i definitely recommend this book. the vibes, the characters, the setting, the relationships - all great. big thumbs up.

“As the legend goes, on Halloween night, in the thick of the forest, where the trees make the shape of a Trinity knot and when the clock hovers between eleven and twelve, you can look up in the clearing and see a witch on her broomstick.”

Thank you to Penguin Random House for the advanced copy of this book! Wow, I'm almost at a loss of words! This book was truly the cutest and coziest YA sapphic halloween book I could've ever asked for! The characters both felt so developed that even during conflict, I truly understood each girls' point of view! This is the proper way to write a miscommunication trope!

"This close to her, I smell herbs I associate with Witches of Fableview, the metaphysical shop the Blake family owns down the street. I don’t know the herbs’ names, but they are scents that make me think of magic. If it were real, it would smell like this—an earthy, consuming potion of petals and oils."

The lore and backstory of her witches coven was so effectively developed, revealing the perfect amount of at the right times. It's so interesting how she was raised communally, a practice that I've always believed is best for children. I adored Anya, my sweet little introverted witch! Throughout this book you truly see her come into herself and broaden her horizons. I loved seeing her become the confident bad-ass witch we always knew she was.

"The crunch of leaves beneath my feet provides a soothing soundtrack to my renewed pacing. I have loved October in many places. It is in my bloodline to do so. I’m named after the goddess Áine, who is known for bringing love, protection, and prosperity to Ireland. In some ways, she is nature itself, and I am an extension of that."

Above all, this book was AUTUMNAL! The most immaculate Halloween vibes. The town of Fableview is one I wish to live in. I'd open a witchy coffee shop/bookstore (ideally next to Witches of Fableview) and immerse myself fully in Halloween events, and definitely join the committee. This book is a hug from nostalgic halloweens of past with magic coursing through it. Perfect for readers looking for small town romances with immaculate theming.
