Very cute! This was a sweet story with a good helping of adventure, alongside moments of connection to the communities Night Chef encounters. I enjoyed the camaraderie between characters, and Night Chef's repeated affirmations to herself.

Night Chef is no ordinary racoon. She spends the days hiding in the kitchen walls and the nights whipping up her own culinary creations. However, one misadventure leads to another, and she finds herself leaving the kitchen on a journey to help a baby crow (Ichi) find his family. Along the way she realizes how lonely life in the kitchen has been and forms her own food loving family.
Mika Song's character design pops throughout the story - with each creature's personality coming through in the art (from the scary and erratic owl to the helpful and cheerful frogs). Action sequences are expressed through pictures rather than words. First time graphic novel readers may need some extra support to follow the story through the panels and pages with limited narration.
The end matter alone (a recipe segment and a section explaining how Night Chef's character evolved from initial drawings) make this a great addition for classroom and school libraries.
