DNF 40%

This book isn’t for me. It’s a bit too unserious, and nothing has developed at 40% enough for me to want to continue. It has some humor, but I need more nuance, or it ends up feeling too silly.

I didn't know how badly I needed a monster romance in my life.

Fi is a badass who essentially has the ability to walk through curtains in Planes to get to where she wants to be. The perfect accessory for a smuggler.

Antal is a centuries-old monster from your worst nightmares. But in a sexy way.... He rules over the land in which Fi calls home, but she's earned the ire of Antal and he's out for flesh.

This book... THIS BOOK!

If you like tension, yearning, enemies to lovers, and teeth... you're going to devour this just like I did.

I loved that we were thrown right into the world and had to pick up on context clues to sus out the goings on around us. The magic system is unique and vast and has a lot of growth potential for the next installment. I really love the addition of a second language and the organic way each meaning is introduced. I even loved how MacLean wrote the complexity of loss, grief, and regret. I felt what the characters were feeling and shed a tear or two along the way.

I am beyond excited to pick this up at launch and can't wait for the next book.

Thank you to NetGalley and Orbit for granting me an e-ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Thank you to NetGally and the author/publisher for an early copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest opinion. Sadly this title was not for me.

I really enjoyed this authors debut title the Phoenix Keeper and I didn’t know much about this one but requested it based on that knowledge. These books could not be more different. If you’re here like me from their first book be wary please. I wouldn’t blink an eye if you told me someone else wrote this. Not even just because the genres are different but the writing style and tone is not the same in any aspect.

This book has my least favorite micro trope which is using the land’s name as a descriptor: in this book’s case: the Void. Everything is void. Void dark. Void black. Void damned. The word void is used 351 times (Ty kindle word count feature). “My void and rainbow hair fell into my face.” What?

The writing style didn’t work for me at all. The book is absolutely bloated with descriptions that dont advance the plot in any shape or form. If I’ve seen a character multiple times I don’t know need to know what color their antlers are any more. I have a good picture of them now. Everything about the word choices are juvenile. This is a 550 ish page book and it didn’t need to be. The word pantherine is used 5 times. Wasn’t even sure that was a word, but we don’t have better alternatives?

The plot doesn’t really make sense either. The opening scene (prologue?) is eerily similar to another popular monster romance book and then isn’t addressed for like half the book. There isnt really any benefit for the FMC (who is like totes an adult at 31) and the monster MMC to team up except to start the romance. The characters have no chemistry and I skipped over the spice because it was awkward. It’s really repetitive and full of phrases like “fuck literally all of that”.

Unfortunately I won’t be continuing this series. Appreciate the opportunity to read early and review though.

My Selling Pitch:
Let me give you the wildest pitch for this book: Frozen meets Treasure Planet meets ACOTAR kinda meets Star Wars because they basically have lightsabers. I’m so firmly a dog person, and our book boyfriend’s a grumpy wet cat, and if Maclean doesn’t expand this beyond a duology, I will RIOT. Olivie Blake meets Ali Hazelwood. A must read for campy, fantasy romance fans.

Pre-reading:
Watch out everyone, she’s picking up monster smut again. I’m ridiculously excited for this. I loved The Phoenix Keeper.

(obviously potential spoilers from here on)
Thick of it:
I’M HERE FOR THE TEETH

The chapter titles are so funny omg.
I smell a winner.

Is ice bitter?

Not a piney boy lol

Oh, I’m SAT.

She's a mailman?
Rainbow land pirate. (Samantha, just say smuggler.)

Frozen meets Treasure Planet.

Mermaid horses don’t make much sense in a frozen tundra, but I’ll ignore it.

And it’s got heist elements? Baby girlll, sign me UP.

This is how you give fashion in a non annoying way.

We can stop bringing up her rainbow hair already.

Void hyenas??? Hell yeah, brother!

I assume the beast is boyfriend. (Well, book two’s anyway.)

Remember how I was like this is how you do fashion without being annoying? It’s gotten annoying. It’s so repetitive.

My brain rot keeps saying spidermonkey.

Detritus sin

It’s kinda giving Rowan/Rhysand.

We’re really overusing bristles.

Froths at the mouth in Run, Run Rabbit. (You’re gonna pry that book from my cold, dead hands.)

Every time a fantasy horse has a dumb name, a demon gets some bagpipes.
Live laugh loving this! (It’s me. I’m demons.)

I LOVE a villain who thinks she’s the hero and is partially justified in her motivations.

Olivie Blake meets Ali Hazelwood.

Dude, enough with the fashion descriptions. We got the costume the first time.

With the way the descriptions are so repetitive, I almost feel like each chapter was written independently of each other, and then the scenes were spliced together into a narrative, which I get, because that’s sort of how I write too, but it really ruins the flow if you don’t go take them out in your edits.

She gets the animal body language in this book so right.

I’M HERE FOR THE TEETH.

Dude the tension. I love enemies to lovers.

Everything in the void is so marine life coded. There’s gotta be something to that.

His fam def ate his boyfriend.

I feel like Antal’s gonna be killed and come back more monstrous, and he’ll be like look away, I’m so gross, and she'll be like raw, next question. (Wrong, but I would’ve been down for this sequel arc too.)

Rom-com coffee order sin.

BRO, I’M SAT.
GNAWING AT MY ENCLOSURE.
I LOVE TENSION.

I JUST NERVOUS GIGGLED. JESUS, I AM AT WORK.

No, I think all of us were like don’t let kitty boyfriend go over the train!

The pacing of this is so good.

Lightsabers, bitch!

I knew they ate his boyfriend.

I love this book. I love our wet cat boyfriend. I love found family. Somebody's gonna die, and I’m gonna ugly cry.

Girl, I want one. I want a demon kitty.

I actually can't read this at work, and this is going on the instruction manuals list. (It’s really not THAT raunchy, I just can’t guard my face when you bring teeth into the equation.)

me: I’m such a dog person.
Also me: I would die for our wet cat boyfriend

No, because why is it Spirit the horse and the little girl?

You can’t just throw horny fairytales at me and expect me to behave on main.

Oh, I need to be sedated.

Is the writing way too repetitive? Like words are reused way too frequently for this to be anything higher than a four. But like OH MY GOD, the tension. I’m so invested. Five star romance.

That was hot as shit.

I don’t want my kids to break up. I don’t want anyone to die. I’m not in the mood. Just let them be happy and shenanigan forever.

I do not want this book to end.

… was that a hint of like if she gets thrown into the void, she can use the transport stone to come back? (No, and boooo.)

My jaw DROPPED. Permission for THAT. Dude.

me: I’m gonna read a silly little monster book
also me: white knuckling my morning latte, blinking back tears at the desk

Get her, Fi!

I feel like she’s gonna kill the horse, and then I’m gonna be extra sad. (No horses were harmed in the making of this novel.)

Girl, I am on the edge of my seat.

Emotional damage 🎶👏🎶 god, this book is SO GOOD.

me: i’m gonna read some silly goofy monster smut
also me: crying into my cheerios this morning, jesus FUCK

Hey babe, if you’re done crying, I gotta go sleep off my food coma 😂😭your brother’s giving me indigestion.

The way I’m like this is a cute little conflict with one demon, but there’s like hundreds more demons, so I don’t know how they’re gonna beat this in the sequel.

I still think her getting out of the void by meeting god is sort of a cop out, but I don’t care because I don’t want them to die.

Notice how no one said Antlers is gonna survive, and I’m not in the mood!

EVERYONE COMES BACK TODAY, MACLEAN.

Camaraderie, I mean- (Samantha, PLEASE (please please)))

This is how you write a satisfying story arc and set up for a sequel. Oh my god, I’m so excited for this series. Fantastic give me 14 of them right now.

What do you mean there’s only one more book?!? That’s so rude!

Also, what are you doing hiding ‘I’m going to fuck you until you can’t stand’ in the glossary, ma’am!?!

Post-reading:
In a world where I’m not a nitpicking bitch, this is five stars. The romance is that good. I enjoyed my time reading it so much!

But in this world, she’s gotta be dropped to a four due to the sheer repetitiveness of the descriptions. If the editor had done their job and wrangled this text into fighting shape…hoo baby, we’d be having a different conversation. I think this book is hitting the market at the perfect time. Hazelwood’s Bride and Gillig’s Knight and the Moth have paved the way and primed mainstream readers for monster camp. If they can market this to that audience, they’re gonna have a homerun and the general populace sat the fuck down for antler boy.

Like I loved it so much!

I think the plotting and magic system are just different enough to distinguish this book from the general ACOTAR framework that has a vicegrip on the genre. Is Antal kinda just a yassified, less capable Rhysand? Yeah. Is he getting added to the book boyfriend list? Fuckin’ absolutely. Is the magic system mostly just a way to play lightsabers? Totally! Do I give a single shit? No! Let fantasy romance have some fun, goddamit.

And this book is funnnn. The humor works. The pacing’s immaculate. The smut’s indecently hot and used sparingly. It’s just so well balanced. Villains have clear goals and arcs. Side characters are pleasingly diverse without ever making those labels their defining characteristics. You get a solid, standalone story that leaves plenty of room for more books. I hope to god MacLean expands this beyond a duology.

It really gave me everything I could’ve asked for from a delightfully unserious fantasy romance, and if the repetitious fat had been cut from it, it’d be a tighter book and an easy five stars. It’s a hard book to pitch, but if you’re part of the just here for a good time bandwagon, you’ve gotta pick this up. You’re gonna love it.

Who should read this:
Silly goofy good time fans
Ali Hazelwood fans
Olivie Blake fans
Kimberly Lemming fans
C. M. Nascosta fans
Campy fantasy fans
Dental records are basically a kink victims

Ideal reading time:
Winter-there’s a lot of snow, but you can pick this up whenever and have a good time.

Do I want to reread this:
Hell yeah.

Would I buy this:
Preordered before I even got my grubby little hands on the arc.

🌑 ARC Review: VOIDWALKER by S.A. MacLean
⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 5 stars
📅 Coming August 2025

Fionamara walks the void between worlds — smuggler, survivor, and unexpected revolutionary. Voidwalker is dark, ambitious, and dripping with atmosphere. Between multi-world politics, flesh-eating immortals, and a mysterious pact with a powerful (and terrifyingly tempting) being named Antal, the stakes in this book are high.

I really enjoyed the concept — it’s fresh and eerie, with striking worldbuilding and sharp writing. But I’ll be honest: as much as I liked it, I didn’t feel that urge to rush back to it. The pacing is slow at times, and I never quite felt fully hooked. Still, I think a lot of readers are going to love this one — especially if you’re into morally grey dynamics, monster-human tension, and that soft ache of a revolution unraveling from the inside out.

❄️Tropes: forced proximity, monster x girl, enemies-ish to allies, rebellion
Star of the show: Aisinay, obviously❄️🐎
📚 For fans of: An Enchantment of Ravens, Sabriel, The Atlas Six, dark fairytale energy

Add it to your TBR if you’re craving something shadowy, strange, and slow-burn.

Many thanks to Orbit Books and NetGalley for this e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The tropes consist of:
Monster romance
Enemies to lovers
Slow burn
Magic system
Found family
Rebellion
Forced proximity

I had been interested to read Voidwalker based on the vibrant cover and the premise. My curiosity was also piqued based on the lean on the monster romance element in the marketing.

I found myself having a great time while reading this. It started off slow and took a while for the story to get going but once it found its rhythm, I was enraptured all the way to the end. I was rooting for the characters to triumph and engrossed in the character development and the blossoming romance between the two leads.

While everything takes from Fionamara’s POV, her character growth as well as Antal’s was endearing and poignant, and I became attached to them both for different reasons. It was entertaining to see their relationship dynamic evolve over the course of the book and their banter and chemistry sizzled off the page.

Despite this being a fun reading experience, if I had to give criticism, it would be that plot drags at the beginning and I found the worldbuilding underdeveloped. The plot definitely takes a backseat to the characters so there is no intrigue or mystery to solve, but instead tension gradually building towards an inevitable confrontation.

Overall, I experienced a rollercoaster of emotions while reading, and I look forward to the sequel. I was surprised to see that this is the first in a duology when it feels like a standalone with a complete story.

4.5 stars.

I had a lot of fun with this book. Fi is such an amazing badass FMC without being annoying or unrealistic. She's relatable in the actions that she takes, the fears that she has, and standing up for a mistake made. I love her snarky replies and dialogue with other characters as well. I really took well to her. The sci-fi elements in this, mixing with the fantasy, weren't like others that I read. It was done so well, and I absolutely loved it. While I'm not much into the whole demon looking thing, or the horns and claws and tails and how it's like a romantic thing going on though too, I kind of just focused on the more human aspects of things of that character, and the romance worked well and was believable in how it built up. I sort of felt that the MMC at times was just, kind of too weak in favor of Fi. But the fact that he was powerful but not, all powerful or something was refreshing to the point that it took more than just him and Fi to finish things off. I do like how things were coming to become resolved as well though. Definitely a lot of traumas to work through for the characters. There are sad moments, moments where you want to slap sense into the characters, and moments that are very enjoyable. They are all characters you can cheer for, and the bad guys are definitely the bad guys you want to see slayed.

I wasn’t sure what to think of Voidwalker at first, and I even contemplated dnfing the book, but I’m glad I stuck around to finish it.

The first couple chapters in this were very hard for me to get through. I didn’t really like the characterization of Fi all the much, and she was at her worst in the beginning. I normally love cocky fmcs, so I’m not sure why I didn’t like Fi all that much, but she got on my nerves a lot.

The story in this was pretty good. Who doesn’t enjoy a good underdog story? The revenge plot and the romance were what kept me around. The pacing felt a little strange though, it almost felt like things should be moving faster than they were, especially with how dire everything seemed.

Thank you so much to the publisher for sending me an arc via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review!

I LOVED this.

A standout romantasy with sharp banter, found family, and rich, original worldbuilding.

Voidwalker is a rare gem in the romantasy genre—an action-packed, emotionally grounded fantasy where both the romance and the worldbuilding shine equally bright. With its vividly original setting of suspended planes and magical energy tech (yes, energy-powered trains and crossbows!), it breaks free from tired medieval tropes to deliver a world as inventive as it is immersive.

Fiona and Antal are a delight: two wounded, complex characters pretending to be tough but slowly learning to trust, heal, and fight alongside each other. Their slow-burn romance is as heartfelt as it is funny, filled with top-tier banter and no tired damsel tropes. Fiona is stubborn, sharp, and completely her own person, while Antal brings a refreshing mix of emotional maturity and respect that gives their dynamic real emotional weight.

The plot balances political intrigue, tense interpersonal moments, and genuinely hilarious character dynamics with ease. Found family vibes, survival themes, and personal growth all pulse beneath the high-stakes adventure. The ending is satisfying while still hinting at deeper political mysteries in the Daeyari world to come.

Perfect for fans of Foundryside, The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy, or anyone desperate for a fantasy where both leads radiate black cat energy and refuse to be tamed. Voidwalker is one of 2025’s best romantasy reads—don’t miss it.

I really enjoyed this book. It’s very different from her other book the Phoenix Keeper which I loved. I loved the dynamic eternal Fi and Antal. I loved the tail. I can’t wait for more stories from the author. I highly recommend this book to all the romance monster girls.

I've been raving about this one to all my friends because I think everyone needs to read it.
Voidwalker is a romantasy/monster romance that's super different from anything I've read in a while. The FMC is a bad ass smuggler, the MMC is a monster that literally eats people, everyone's queer, it's spicy, and they have to defeat bad monsters trying to take over their territory. I think this is the first in a series, but it absolutely works as a standalone, and I loved every minute of it.

ARC Review

This was so much fun to read! I enjoyed the world building, the characters, and the bonds between them. I especially loved Fi’s personality (thought she was hilarious), and the banter between her and “Antlers”. I haven’t read a lot of monster romance, but if they’re all done like this I may have to read more.

There was a good balance of plot, spice and action. And the spice wasn’t super crazy, a good intro to monster romance in my opinion.

Thank you Net Galley and Orbit for the ARC copy! Looking forward to the sequel already!

YEEEEES 💖 okay, it was a 4.5 but I’m rounding to 5.
I have to admit, I also liked the authors previous book so I already had some positive bias going into this one. However, I tried to be critical. Does it feel like a bit too much info and lacking ‘some’ depth? Yes… but I realized this was part of a duology so it made more sense why it felt that way.

I looooove the FMC. She’s so badass and I didn’t feel like her character was dimmed in order to have her partner. She had complex emotions and we saw different parts of her throughout the book.

I appreciate that while there is romance and spice, it’s not like the book couldn’t have existed without it. Seemed like just the right balance!

Out of all the fantasy romance books I have read recently, this has to be my favorite so far. Finally, an emphasis on the plot without the romance being shoved down our throats!! And the woman can actually form real thoughts when she is near the MMC!

But seriously, this was so much better written. The FMC and MMC both deal with grief, regret, and self-reflection in a mature way. I also loved that their relationship felt earned, rather than the insta-love bullcrap that most books are doing now.

The spice was also very well done. Not over the top or unbelievable. Also felt more passionate because I believed in the characters feelings for each other.

Also, Antal was so interesting. A dangerous predator to the world, but was sweet, emotional and treated Fi with respect and dignity. We love a man who respects boundaries and consent!!

I did feel distracted by the overuse of a few words. Rainbow hair, void, ozone. This might be stupid of me, but I still don’t know what ozone smells like so it kept interrupting my “mind movie”. My only other critique would be the intimate scene at the end. It felt like a weird addition to the length and out of place.

Overall, I would recommend this to anyone who likes fantasy romance, and enjoys and actual story with alittle depth in addition to some very classy spice. A fantastic 4 star read, and I’m looking forward to the next one!!

What a phenomenally fun novel- absolutely smashed it. The energy this book gave off was so incredible, the imagery was so detailed and I could place myself exactly in the world. The characters were so FUN- the wet cat energy of our sexy little demon was chefs kiss, and I love a badass bi mommy queen who loves a good bite… So fun, so fresh.

Voidwalker was SUCH a great read!! It follows Fi, a Voidwalker and rogue smuggler who accepts a job that goes totally sideways and ends up blowing up a building in the capitol. In the aftermath. Fi meets a Daeyari that is unlike one she has ever met and they become reluctant allies as they work together to take down an oppressive tyrant.

The banter and relationship between Fi and Antal was absolutely DELICIOUS and was so good! It was clever, sarcastic, and full of tension. The Daeyari are such an interesting species! Anton is a wonderfully complex character who struggles with the morality of his existence in that world as it currently stands. The relationship development between the two MCs was lovely once both started to let down their guards and lower their masks.

A highly anticipated read for me for 2025 that did not disappoint! Thank you Orbit Books and Netgalley for the advance copy.

Started out slow and ended up being a great read. I noticed that this is part of a duology and hope to see maybe another couple take the lead in the next book.

I really wanted to like this book, but for me there just was not enough nuance.
I feel like it ticked every box and that’s the whole point of it, to tick boxes.
The characters felt really flat, the world building was almost nonexistent, and the main characters just could not carry this book. Even their Romance was meh
If you’re reading it for spice, there is spice, but you kind of gotta be biting.
The side character of Astrid was far more interesting than any of the other characters.
Maybe it’ll get deeper and the characters will be flushed out along with the world in the next book, but I think I’m just gonna leave it.

Thanks so much to net gallery for the e-arc of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Antal might just be one of my new favorite book boyfriends. I’m a sucker for a grumpy devilish man 💕

This book was such a fun time! I really loved the romance. The banter was great, the tension and a little bit of yearning, I ate it up! Teaching her to say “fuck me” in his language! Delicious, well done. 👏

I also loved the emotional depth to the main characters and the growth we see them go through both together, and as individuals.

As someone whose obsessed with dnd style tieflings, devils and demonology, it’s so exciting to read about tiefling-like or demon-like characters, I feel like I don’t get enough of that and I ate it up. Antal is 👌👩‍🍳💋. Though this is technically a monster romance, I appreciate that it wasn’t too over the top and Antal felt very much like a man and not a monster. That’s just my personal preference though. ☺️

The vibes here were immaculate, and I will definitely be reading book two. 🥰

I have a few complaints:

1. Some of the writing and early world building was confusing at times and there were phrases and words that were used to repeatedly like “her coat of bristles”, “frightened hare”, etc. There were also some grammatical/spelling errors, which would be easy to fix.

2. I really hate that Fi refers to Antal as “daeyari” or “Antlers” instead of his name after their relationship progresses to something more serious. Those seem to be almost like slurs in a way, and after growing an understanding of his struggles and how he feels about these kinds of things, it’s a strange choice and feels as though the character is too ignorant to see that those terms could be offensive. (I know this is a fictional world and it’s not that deep, but it just felt kind of icky).

3. The plot had good bones, but ultimately felt more like an afterthought to the romance. The romance was great, but I think if the plot was little stronger it would really enhance the book and the other elements of the book. The villain(s) felt pretty one dimensional and not fleshed out, just more of a plot device than anything, which was disappointing because I think they have the potential to be very interesting and dynamic characters.

4. This is just a nit picky complaint at this point, but the term “planeverse” sounds super silly to me 😅

Overall I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it if you’re looking for a delicious “light”- monster romance with a unique world and fun characters. Had a great time! Looking forward to book 2. 💕

3.5 stars: Be warned, this is a long read. At 592 pages, it left me wanting more from the story, but in far fewer pages.

The story did grab me from the start; a rainbow-haired feisty smuggler roped into a heist turned armed revolution against people-eating monsters? Sign me up! However, it began to lose me towards the middle of the story. The revolutionary plot that started so strong takes the simmer back burner to put the monster romance on turbo boil.

And that’s not necessarily a bad thing. But when the story starts with a heavy focus on injustice and political revolution, and then pushes those aside for some lustier aspirations and never really comes back as strong to the original focus? It feels a little funny. Maybe more so at this current moment in history.

Overall, I did enjoy elements of the story, but also feel it tried to wear too many hats and be too many things at once. It is largely being marketed as a monster romance, but it will take you 60% to get those moments. So well I do feel the romance took over the story towards the end, there is a lot to get through first if that is why you are picking this book up. On the other hand, to market it in any other way, you are perhaps also not going to get as solid of a thought out plot line there either.

In my opinion it is a very very ambitious idea, pulling a lot of intriguing sci-if fantasy elements into it, that just didn’t quite land for me. I’m curious to see what others will think.

Mind the triggers; on the page eating of people (the non-sexy variety).

Thank you to Orbit Books and NetGalley for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review. Voidwalker comes out August 19th.
