It is such a hard thing to view when it is such a short story. But, I will give it my best shot!

This is a fast, interesting, and mysterious read that has some TradWife, smalltown vibes and will keep you on the edge of your seat. Concise enough to not feel like it's too long and also gives you enough detail for characters to feel like people you could know. Don't try and guess anything too early or you will be way off base!

Small Things is an impactful read, delving into the harrowing reality of domestic abuse and one woman's desperate bid for freedom. The summary sets up a compelling premise: Hannah, a jewelry maker, finds her only solace in her craft, which her abusive husband threatens to take away. This pushes her to devise a plan to escape, leaving no trace.
Morris certainly captures the suffocating atmosphere of an abusive marriage and Hannah's quiet desperation. The short story format lends itself to a quick, intense dive into Hannah's emotional state, and the narrative builds a sense of unease as Hannah's plan unfolds. The reader is kept on edge, wondering how she will manage to pull off her escape without detection.
However, the brevity of the story, while contributing to its intensity, also feels like its biggest limitation. The setup of Hannah's dire situation and the conceptualization of her escape are well-executed, but the actual execution of her plan feels somewhat rushed and perhaps a little too neat. Given the gravity of the circumstances, a more drawn-out or detailed exploration of the "how" might have added more depth and tension, making Hannah's ingenuity even more palpable.
Ultimately, Small Things is a solid, thought-provoking read that sheds light on a serious issue. While it delivers a satisfying, albeit quick, resolution, it leaves you wishing for a bit more substance and a deeper dive into the intricacies of Hannah's journey to freedom.

3.5 ⭐️

I found the story quite interesting. I despised the husband every time he voiced his useless opinion to Hannah. I was intrigued to see where the story would go, especially since I went into it blind. I thought the ending was okay.

This was an okay story. Very clever but the writing was a bit boring. The characters were boring as well. Meh.
