Spoops is pure Halloween magic! From the very first page, Laurie A. Conley’s illustrations absolutely charm—every single page is full of personality, expression, and delightful detail! The art is both spooky and sweet in the best way, creating a whimsical world that’s a joy to explore.

A.J. Locascio’s prose matches the mood perfectly—clever, playful, and full of rhythm that makes it a treat to read aloud to children of all ages. There’s a warmth and humor woven through every line, making this a book that’s as fun for adults as it is for kids. Additionally, I appreciated how the author depicted the parents having a healthy, respectful conversation with their daughter at the end of the book - they admitted their short-comings/mistakes as parents and opened a dialogue up with Holly to hear how she would like Halloween to look moving forward... LOVE to see it!

This is one I’ll come back to every October. Five stars for a festive, feel-good read that celebrates the cute side of creepy with heart and style! Thank you, NetGalley!

Wonderfully illustrated and sweet story of a girl who loves Halloween and just wants her parents to like it too. Not everyone will like the same things you do, but for the ones you love, you should give it a try.

Spoops is whimsical, nostalgic, and just the right amount of spooky. I read it with my daughters (ages 9, 7, and 3), and they were captivated from the very first page. The bold black-and-orange illustrations held their attention, and even my youngest was pointing excitedly and asking questions throughout.

This story is more than seasonal fun—it’s a heartfelt celebration of embracing our differences and being unapologetically ourselves. The rhyming flow made it a joy to read aloud, and the artwork transported us straight into a world where Halloween spirits are real and kindness always wins.

Thank you so much for the opportunity to read this early—it was a joy for the whole family!

This is an extremely cute story, which is also quite unexpected in a good way.
A young girl, who is born with a deep love for Halloween (has the spirit in her), wants to give it its worth.
Her parents who are dentists are not so sure about celebrating Halloween.
Then the girl's unique abilities and magic coupled with the Halloween spirits....
I will leave it there.
The story teaches many lessons and values without being didactic. The unusual Halloween setting provides a fresh take.
And the art - it is excellent.

Spoops: The Little Spirits of Halloween is a wonderfully illustrated children's book. The black, orange, and white color scheme really ties into the Halloween theme and bring the book to life. i enjoyed reading this book to my children as they understood perspective of Holly ( a 10 year old who is obsessed with Halloween) and her parents who are dentist. My youngest can't wait to carve a pumpkin and wish for a spoon to visit. 😁

Holly's parents are dentists and not big fans of Halloween. This is unfortunate for Holly because she loves it! Her parents leave to go to a dental convention and Holly meets the Spoops. This was a delightful Halloween story! I especially loved the rhyming verses. The more difficult vocabulary will make it perfect for older readers, but it will also make a fun read aloud for younger children. The illustrations were outstanding! I loved that everything was black and white with pops of orange throughout the book. I will definitely be adding this to my school library.

The town of Maple Hollow loves Halloween and gets into the spirit every year, except for the town dentists, Dr. and Dr. Hollowell. Unfortunately, their daughter Holly was always a spooky child, drawn to creepy toys and all things black and orange. Fearing for her oral health, they never let her participate in the Halloween celebrations. This year she makes a wish on a Jack o' Lantern, enlisting the help of the Spoops, Halloween spirits who bring tricks and treats.

This was a really cute Halloween book. All of the illustrations are done in black, white, and orange, which makes the whole story feel very festive. The Spoops designs are adorable and the story is told in the form of a poem. This book does a good job of capturing the spirit of Halloween without making the focus all about candy. It's a great way to bring focus to other Halloween traditions and it is sure to be enjoyed by anyone with an "eerie disposition".

What a lovely, cozy read! The name is adorable, with such a fun twist on the word "spoopy." The illustrations are magical, with a nostalgic style that will remind parents/older readers of kids books long ago. The characters were well thought out, with the main child being an easy child to identify with (especially for readers who feel drawn to Halloween). The story was easy to follow, and the rhyming scheme added a level of fun. Young and old readers are sure to enjoy this!

I loved this book about the spirits of Halloween. A girl who loves Halloween has to persuade her parents to enjoy the holiday too. The story is written in poem-form. The art is amazing and definitely adds to the story. If you love Halloween, you will love this book. I highly recommend it!

Spoops is a cute rhyming graphic novel about the joys of Halloween and feeling the freedom to express our differences. The main character, Holly Hollowell, is the daughter of Halloween-hating dentists who refuse to allow her to celebrate. Holly is obsessed with all things creepy and devises a plan to convince her parents to allow her to celebrate. When that doesn’t work, she makes a wish on a Jack-o-lantern, enlisting the help of the spoops, the sprits of Halloween.

With its soothing rhythm and inviting artwork, Spoops is a quick, fun holiday read. A few of the rhymes felt a bit forced to me, throwing off the rhythm, but not enough to harm my enjoyment. Ultimately, it is a lovely story about a family learning to be accepting of their differences. The art by Laurie A. Conley is appropriately ‘spoopy’, representing the cute little spoops using a color palette of only black and orange throughout.

Spoops is perfect for reading aloud at bedtime or to a classroom in October.

Thank you to IDW Publishing/Top Shelf and NetGalley for providing the e-arc for my honest review.

The illustrations are beautiful and the story was unique! I didn’t love the parents and thought they were acting childish, but other than that, I really enjoyed it!

Sweet and simple story about a little girl who loves Halloween but her parents won't let her celebrate. I loved the artwork with this book, it felt very nostalgic to the old classic Halloween decorations we would see in the 90's and the story had a very positive spin on the holiday. Where most books focus on the candy, this one focused on the fun.

"Spoops, The Little Spirits of Halloween," was a quick less then 10 min. read for me. The only "issue" I had with this book was it was labeled as a graphic novel and the description states, "presented in rhyming verse." There was a qick poem at the start, but the rest of this is pictures without any test. This is still cute and I can get a copy of this for my classroom for picture books and it would be great for story telling time. As a Halloween and spooky girl, the little Spoops or Haloween sprites are so cute, and can't wait for that time of year again.

I loved the colour palette of the pictures in the story.

In this story the little girl loves Halloween and wants to experience it but her parents are dentists and despise Halloween. But with a little bit of imagination and magic the little girl's wish comes true.

This will be a great read in the fall for October when the Community class comes one Fridays for a story and craft.

The illustrations, from the textures to the color choices, were perfect. The vibes were amazing, and I liked that (aside from buying a pumpkin), Holly didn’t disobey her parents outright. And the Spoops were adorable. The writing was okay, and the theme was a bit in your face. I’m not sure it was my favorite message for a picture book, but at the same time, if presented in the right way, it could be helpful to show how sometimes people just won’t understand something until they are ready to listen. And, again, the book is so pretty, and the Halloween aesthetics are top tier.

Spoops follows the story of a young girl Holly Hollowell whonis quite enthusiastic about all things Halloween. However her parents who are dentists by profession do not share her enthusiasm. They have always been abhorred to the idea of Halloween with all the sweets and trick and treats.

But this time, Holly is determined to convince her parents but will it be possible? With gorgeous illustrations and an amazing storyline, this book felt like a classic storybook that is well loved by all.

I had a great time reading this. The author has weaved in the magic of Halloween and the Halloween spirits creating the atmosphere of this festivity in an unique way definitely charmed me. It's heartwarming and beautifully written. The illustrations are absolutely amazing and they are visually delightful, I'm sure kids will love them too. Written in rhyming verses, Holly's love for Halloween will surely take you on a rollercoaster ride of curiosity and anticipation.
