Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing a sneak peek audio arc.

This is my first time listening to anything written by V.E. Schwab and it did not disappoint! I only got to listen to the first 12 chapters with multiple POVs, and sadly have to wait the finish the story. It follows three different women from three different timelines: Maria in the 16th-century Spain, Charlotte in 19th century London, and Alice in 21st-century Boston. This is perfect for fans of queer historical fiction, gothic vibes, and vampires. The narrators have done a fantastic job and I love the accent on Alice.

*** Thank you to Tor Publishing Group and Macmillan Audio for the ARC sneak peak of the first twelve chapters***

The first twelve chapters of Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil were electric, giving us a glimpse into the lives of our three main characters. Each character had a distinct tone, making it easy to follow. Easy to follow does not mean V.E. Schwab skipped out on her beautiful writing style... No, we get her hallmark writing style that fits the story so well.

For my audiobook people, the narrators were a wonder. Each of our three characters has their own narrator, and each narrator adds such charm and life to the characters through their voice acting. Words of phrases used with just the right inflection, it feels like I'm listening to real people having conversations.

As always, I'm extremely excited for the rest of the book. V.E. Schwab is off to a great start. Not a boring start by any means, this is a book that pulls you in right away- without confusing you.

Absolutely amazing start to one of my most anticipated reads of the year. I can not wait to finish the book!

I only read the 12-chapter sample of Bury Our Bones, but I am already completely hooked. The atmosphere is dark, haunting, and lyrical in the best way. The writing pulls you in immediately and refuses to let go.

Even in just the sample, the character dynamics are already gripping. There’s a slow unraveling of secrets, pain, and power that feels both personal and epic. The vibe is very gothic romantasy with a heavy emotional pull, and the tension is building in a way that makes me desperate for more.

The world feels layered and lived-in. Every line feels intentional. I can already tell this is going to be one of those books that stays with me long after I finish it.

I still have more to go, but I genuinely cannot wait to finish the full story when the series finally releases. If the rest of the book lives up to what I’ve read so far, it’s going to wreck me in the best possible way.

Sneak Peek Review (12 chapters)

This is my first VE Schwab book and I’ve read the first 12 chapters from the audiobook sneak peek. I’m so intrigued by each of these characters and their perspectives. So, far we have heard 3 POVs and I’m wondering where these stories will converge.

We start out sometime in the 1500s and end up in 2019! All of the women seem to be roughly the same age. Early 20s. All of them seemingly want to run away from something.

The story presents very gloomy or dark vibes. I’m sure to paint a sinister picture of what’s to come. I will share a full review when I finish this book.

WOW! What an incredible audiobook and story. I am absolutely hooked from chapter 1 through the end of the preview and I cannot wait to see what happens next.. I know that I would enjoy reading this book physically, but the choices in the narrators for the audiobook just fit the story so well and add an additional layer of depth. The writing is absolutely poetic and I do not know why I waited this long to consume something from V. E. Schwab.

The narration for the book is good, but unfortunately I did not get enough of the story to determine if I wanted to continue.

I was so excited to be able to listen the sample chapters and devoured them in the same day I received it! I love the dual storyline, especially Maria's and I am on pins and needles for release day so I can continue the story. Schwab's writing is effortlessly fabulous and rich, alway drawing me into the the lives of the characters. I loved the audio narration by Julia Whelan, Katie Leung and Marisa Calin and can't wait to continue. I was holding back requesting the e-book, hoping the full audio would be available. I loved the production so much I would like to experience it in its entirety, and will definitely be re-listening to the portion I habe already heard!

I can't wait to know the whole story and I'm sure I will be amazed.

This sneak peek of Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil sets the tone perfectly—moody, lyrical, and unsettling in the best way. The narration is immersive, pulling you straight into a Southern Gothic world where secrets lurk just beneath the surface. It gave me chills, and I need more. One star held back only because I’m dying to hear the rest. Bring on the full audiobook!

This was fantastic audio, Julia Whelan; Katie Leung; Marisa Calin do a fantastic job. The story is mesmerizing and I was completely enthralled from the first chapter. You can clearly differentiate between the characters and the narrators bring the story to life. We have only met Alice and Maria at this point but I am dying to find out what happens next. I am positive this will be one of my favorite listens of the year.

I am begging you Macmillan Audio, please have mercy on me and send me the full audio!

I feel like they played with my heart by only providing a sneak peek. I saw this as a BOTM option and was curious. Honestly, the synopsis didn’t pull me, wasn’t sure if it was my vibe. I can tell you now that I have never slammed the make it my BOTM option so hard. I cannot wait for this to come so I can devour the rest of the book.

When I spotted this book on NetGalley, I was instantly excited—only to realize it was just a preview, which definitely brought a little heartbreak. Still, that short glimpse totally did its job: it hooked me. The dual timelines unfolding side by side pulled me right in, and I’m already emotionally invested in both characters. I could feel the tension building and the pieces beginning to connect, and now I’m counting down the days until I can get my hands on the full story.

Even though it was just a teaser, it gave me exactly what I needed to know this book belongs on my must-read list. The writing had this perfect balance of intrigue and heart, and the pacing was just right to keep me flipping pages. I’ve already put in a request at my local library because there’s no way I’m missing out on how this all unfolds. If the rest of the book is anything like this preview, I have a feeling it’s going to be one I won’t be able to put down.

I have not read a V.E. Schwab book before, but I now understand all the praise this author receives. The first twelve chapters of this book had me entranced. I have read the inspiration for this book, Carmilla. I believe the author, especially from Maria's point of view, does an amazing job of capturing the atmosphere and vibe of the original text. I am excited to continue this book!
