I received a sample of Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil from Net Gallery and WOW! It is dark, dual timelines, and very toxic between female characters. V.E Schwab sucks you into the story. I cannot wait to finish the rest!

WHAT A TEASER. I don’t typically do sneak peeks but I love V.E Schwab so when I saw the first twelve chapters were available I had to request it. The chapters I was lucky enough to listen to were very engaging. The narration was wonderfully done, I truly felt like I was transported into the story. I really enjoyed the distinct POVs. I cannot wait to finish the story and jump back into the audiobook on June 10th.

I'm thrilled that the publisher offered this sneak peek for this book! I wasn't sure whether I wanted to read it, but I'm definitely sold now!

Oh my goodness, I am blown away! This book has been one of my most anticipated reads of 2025, and this snippet has exceeded all my expectations for it. I knew I was going to like it, and I knew it would be good. But this is phenomenal. The taste we get for the characters, writing, and different settings in this snippet alone showcases how much work V.E. Schwab put into creating this. I didn’t think it was possible to be even more excited for this book. As I was listening, I kept wishing I had a physical copy with me to be able to highlight because so many quotes just jumped out at me. I can’t wait for the release!

I'm going to start off by saying the narrator of Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil by V.E. Schwab was wonderful. They really helped keep my interest in the story.
The story it self was amazing so far. (This was a sample.) This was an extended preview including the first 12 chapters of the book, and it is SO GOOD!! I instantly pre-ordered this book because It was amazing thus far. As I continued to listen to the audio I felt the feminine rage growing softly and steadily and I just wanted more and more and when I reached the end of the sample audiobook I held myself together because I just didn't want it to end. NOW I HAVE TO WAIT FOR IT TO BE RELEASED on June 10, 2025!!! UGH! cant wait.
The feeling of this book was a bit eerie to me at first simply because I didn't know what to expect but the things that women go through and just LIVE through. I have my own suspicions from the beginning of Maria's story but I don't know if what I am assuming is correct or not yet.
In 1500's Spain, Maria wants more than the life expected of her as a poor young woman, so when she finds herself married to a rich husband, life leaves her feeling trapped. And she discovers that she's actually attracted to women.
Women aren't a piece of decoration to adorn and show off whenever you want to show us off to make yourself seem more appealing to others. W
Women aren't the property of men.
We are human.
We feel.
We love.
We yearn for things.
We are women.
In 2019 Alice is a nervous college student who has a memorable encounter with a mysterious girl named Lottie. She has her own perspective but has she been alive for a lot longer?
Please get yourself to pre-order this book/ audiobook.
I will be owning both as I truly enjoyed the audiobook but I would love to add this to my personal library as well. The imagery is just as beautiful as the writing.
Thanks to Net-Galley for the gifted Audiobook ARC sampler in exchange for my honest review.

Audio Sneak Peek Review
After listening to this preview, I will definitely be holding off on my physical galley and waiting for the full audiobook, so that I can read immersively with both eyes and ears.
The narrators were very successful at bringing the main characters from different times and places to life for me. This sneak peek was just enough to have me on the very edge of my seat. So good!!
My thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to listen to this sample.

Julia Whelan could literally narrate a phone book and I would find it entertaining because of her mastery of performing. The performances provided by Katie Leung and Marisa Calin are also well done well. The production of the audiobook is high quality and adds to the overall experience of the book.
This was an enjoyable preview and I think that I want to continue with the story. It’s my first experience with the author and I am inclined to read more of their work. From the preview I can already tell this is going to be an emotional read about the female experience and empowerment.

Chapter 1 - 13 review
I LOVED these narrators. They each perfectly portrayed each character; their emotions, the accents and the core of each woman within these 13 chapters. I can confirm that I will be getting this audiobook! I need to know how this goes!

I have two separate ratings:
The quality of the narration- ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
All the stars. The narrators did an incredible job of bringing the characters and world to life. It is the reason I was able to stay invested in the story as long as I did.
Therefore, the rating for the sneak peek will be high because my opinion pasted below didn’t come until later.
This is one of those books that I had the highest expectations for and ended up so very disappointed in. VE Schwab definitely drew us in with a fascinating set of characters and great atmosphere. I was ready to sink my teeth into whatever was coming- no pun intended! But… nothing came. At 27% I finally admitted that I couldn’t identify even a shadow of a plot. Sentences and scenes ran together in a repetitive cycle and it had lost all of its glimmer for me. I still think she’s an incredible author, but this one needed some editing and reworking.

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is one of my favorite books, and I’m sure this one will be a favorite as well. The writing is lush, the characters well developed and the atmosphere enticing. I can’t wait to immerse myself in the entire novel when it comes out.
I did find the accents a little bit challenging to understand so I will definitely read, rather than listen to this work of art. I don’t want to miss a single word.

♡ Thank you @macmillan.audio and @netgalley for the complimentary sneak peek!
I previewed the first 12 chapters of @veschwab’s new book, and it makes me want to possibly wait for publication date to listen to the rest instead of switching over to eyeballs (since I was lucky to also be sent an ARC from @torbooks).
The narrators all bring unique voices to the characters — three women from three very different times and places in history.
The first 12 chapters are spent predominantly in the 16th century Spain, but also in present day Boston where a Scottish girl is attending uni. And I can’t wait to see more of 19th century London, bc we know VE Schwab can write a great alternative London from her shades of magic series.
This preview was tantalizing and I need the next installment tout de suite!

I loved how distinct the three POVs were from one another. The story was so engaging!! I can’t wait for it to come out to finish the rest of the story!!!

I have not encountered a book quite like this one. Multiple POVs, queer perspectives, historical fiction from multiple eras and mild fantasy? Amazing. I loved it. This teaser absolutely has me wanting the rest of the story. I finished this in one sitting, I couldn't press pause.
I also need to give the narrators praise. The accents added so much to the listening experience, and I loved how animated and dynamic their renditions were. I'd love to hear more from all from them.
Can't wait to listen to the whole thing!

I've really enjoyed this sneak peek at the audio of the upcoming Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil! All three narrators are great and have really put an incredible performance on so far! I can't wait to grab the audio when it releases and I can get Alice, Maria & Lottie's full story!

The only thing I didn’t like is it didn’t include the ending! Vampires ✅ Strong female leads ✅ my favorite audio narrator ✅ multiple POVs ✅
There was so much I loved about this book that follows three young women in 3 different timelines. Spooky and so well written! Can’t wait to read the rest

Obviously, this is not a full review, but what I have listened to so far is so amazing that I can't wait for the rest of this book!

This sample of Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soul was very intriguing! I really enjoyed these narrators. I can’t wait to listen to the whole thing. It’s one of my most anticipated releases of the year.

It’s hard to review just the first few chapters of a book, but this sneak peaks teases what’s sure to be a thrilling and emotional read. The narrators all breathe such life into Schwab’s prose, immediately drawing you into this sprawling, gothic world. I can’t wait to hear the rest of it!

This was a sneak peak of the first 12 chapters of the book, so obviously not much has happened so far. But what we did get has me very excited for the full book to release in June! We have 3 point of views, Maria, Alice, Lottie. We didn't get much of Alice and we got even less of Lottie. But Maria's chapters were so good, I love the way her mind works she's definitely my favorite perspective so far and I need to know what's going to happen next!!

Ok so. This was great, but now I have to wait for more. 😭
Seriously though - I’m so glad I got this ALC sneak peak (thank you Macmillan for the NetGalley copy!!) because it confirmed to me that in addition to the copy I have ordered, I’ll for sure be listening to this one on audio.
The narrators were fantastic. Dynamic, compelling—just like the women they were representing. I think Alice may be my favorite so far (and yes I am from Boston but obviously notttt biased), but I’m genuinely intrigued by all of them.
I saw V.E. Schwab describe this book as an unapologetic “tale of hunger and the many shapes that takes.” You feel that discomfort, that grumble so keenly here. There’s a longing and reaching from the women here. A discontent with life, with the people around them, the expectations against them. How they come up against the hunger of predators they’re up against.
These women are all edges. Sharp beyond their teeth.
It’s a tease, but it’s a deep one. An appetizer, if you will. I’m not starving but certainly hungry for a full copy to dive into. For now, I’ll wait patiently to see how these stories continue to intersect and evolve once this one releases.
