I will happily eat up anything V.E. writes. This sneak peek has me foaming at the mouth for more. A beautifully written story that somehow delicately weaves in feminine rage, sorrow, longing, and the patriarchal standards women are held to.

Tied into an idyllic historical backdrop, complete with a sprawling estate, hired help, and overbearing in-laws, V.E. tells the story of Maria, a fierce and malcontent viscountess. Maria's new life with her new husband is not what she expected, and she makes her discomfort and anger known to the reader, all while smiling and putting on a polite face to those around her. Maria is a perfect example of the trials women are expected to endure to please others (men).

We have another FMC, Alice, set in Boston in 2019. Alice is a young woman just figuring herself out. Her character seems unsure of herself, anxious, and a whole lot relatable. After a heated one-night stand with a mystery woman, Alice finds herself alone in bed, last night's lover leaving her a simple goodbye note on the bedside lamp. I have a few theories as to where Alice's storyline is going and I can't wait to be proven right... or wrong! I expect a big twist from V.E. and know better than to guess much at all.

I am, however, most excited to read more from Lottie, who resides in 19th-century London. Lottie is a fiery and borderline reckless girl. Lottie's character thirsts for more in life and eventually finds just that. I feel we did not get enough context on Lottie's story in the first twelve chapters and can't wait to read more.

Overall, I appreciate V.E.'s writing style and willingness to explore such haunting and provocative narratives. Her writing is rich with atmosphere, each timeline bursting with distinct textures and mysticism. The portrayal of queer characters is nuanced and unapologetic, woven into the fabric of the narrative without becoming their sole defining traits. Such inclusivity adds authenticity and emotional resonance, allowing readers to see reflections of themselves in such a haunting, supernatural tale.

Absolutely loved everything about this sample - except that it was ONLY a sample LOL. Can't wait for release day to enjoy the entire story. Another absolute banger from Schwab for sure!

I need more!!! The sneak peek of the audio was brilliant. I love how the three POVs each has its own narrator to voice the part. The Scottish accent was perfection and Julia Whelan is an all time favorite narrator for me. She's amazing and I could listen to her all day. I can't wait to finish this story and am hooked.

This story has already pulled me in, and I’m so intrigued to see where it goes. The story is rich and building beautifully! I’m fully invested in the characters.

The audiobook is fantastic so far! Julia Whelan’s narration is, as always, top-tier. She brings so much to the story, and I’m thrilled she’s one of the narrators behind the mic for this one. I seriously can’t wait to hear the rest of the book!

Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the opportunity to get an early sneak peek listen. I’m counting down the days until I can dive back in!

I received an audio preview with the first three hours of the book. Full review will come when I read it in full. Thank you to Macmillan Audio for a free preview.

However, this audio is everything. Julia Whelan is one of my favorite narrator, and this book has a couple of other narrators in duet style as well. Absolutely phenomenal. I am so excited to read the rest of this book, and I cannot wait for release day. I am invested and need to know the rest of the story. VE Schwab's storytelling is unmatched, and she is an auto-buy author for me. This story is no different.

This sneak peak was phenomenal and I am now even more excited for this release than I already was!
The narrators, Julia Whelan, Katie Leung and Marisa Calin all did an incredible job of bringing Schwab's characters to life. Each narrator has a distinctive voice and conveyed their individual characters so well it would have been easy to tell exactly whose story we were diving back into without the chapter headers.
Victoria has an incredible was of writing queer stories and it really shows in this sampler. Now, I just need the release date to hurry up and come around so that I can devour the whole story!

Poetic gothic prose with all the addictive elements Schwab does best. Lush writing and yearning led to some hot scenes🫶🏽I’m obsessed with the main characters already just a few chapters in.
Includes multiple povs & timelines yet each feels distinct from each other. Having a great time so far.
Oof can’t wait devour this when the rest comes out.

3.5 ⭐️

Thank you NetGalley for a sneak peek of the first 12 chapters of the ALC.

This was an intriguing start where we follow 3 different characters, although the majority of the first 12 chapters focus on Maria’s POV and I wish we got to see more of the other women. Although I wanted to see more from the other characters, Maria’s chapters were beautifully written and so descriptive/atmospheric that you are instantly transported to Santo Domingo and I absolutely loved that.

The story is still being set up so it is hard to give an accurate rating or review of the sneak peek, but the narration is really well done and I love the use of multiple narrators for the different characters we are following. It makes it so much easier to follow whose chapters we are in and to give each character/timeline their own unique feel. I think this is really important in a multi POV book and I'm so happy that we got multiple narrators for this and they each fit so well with their characters. I am curious as to where this book is going to go and how all of the women's stories will end up connecting!

I really enjoyed this sample. It made me intrigued and wanting more. All the women were very interesting and kept my interest. I want to know more about them, and how their stores intertwined. Each woman was compelling and complex in the short time I got to read about them

Wow the first 12 chapters of this audiobook were so good! I was immediately drawn into the story. I loved the accents in this audiobook! I will be patiently awaiting the rest of this audiobook!

Devastated, I could only listen to a sneak peek of this audiobook. The story is captivating from the first page and I am eager to read the rest of the book. June 10th can not come any sooner. The writing is beautiful and the woman depicted in the first few chapters shows a wide range of the female experience regardless of the time period. The feelings expressed by Maria and Alice transcend space and time and are relatable to any woman. Maria’s female rage and subsequent self control is something that will resonate with many women. This is the type of book that will spark interesting debates and meaningful conversations about gender roles, sexuality and the power dynamics between people.

I cannot wait for the rest of this book to come out! The narrators were great and I was drawn right in. When the sneak peak ended and it stopped, I was totally not ready for it! I was enjoying the storyline from the 1500’s the most but excited to see where this story goes! Counting down the days until release day.

I couldn't help myself--when I saw this sample available for "listen now," I just had to download it! And now I'm suffering the wait of when the full audiobook is available!

So far, these 12 chapters have introduced three women who yearn for something beyond the confines of their bodies and societal norms. The storytelling is rich, as would be expected for VE Schwab fans, and the lyrical historical atmosphere reminds one of The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue and a hint of The Familiar.

The narrators are superb, bringing unique voices and accents to the characters and I was enthralled.

This sneak peek is not enough! What a fabulous start to a book. In just these few chapters, I am already heavily invested in the story. The narrators did an incredible job and I am really looking forward to the rest of this novel.

If anything, the sneak peek just demonstrates what an incredible writer Schwab is and how deftly she crafts a story, transitioning between three very different characters. When the book comes out, I’ll definitely be picking this book up.

I only listened to what I was able to and I absolutely loved what I heard. I can’t wait to read more. So far, I love Maria and Alice, I can’t wait to hear about Lottie. I can’t wait to get my copy and read it and I will have multiple copies because so far this is my favorite read of the year (so far). I highly recommend it to anyone who love historical and vampires., and I can’t wait for it!!!
