This book is an example of how to write three different but overlapping characters well, with the skill of three narrators bringing the story to life. I was immediately pulled in by this sneak peek.

A beautifully done audiobook from the powerhouse trio of Julia Whelan, Katie Leung and Marisa Calin. Each performance is distinctive, expressive and immersive. The audio version adds a certain layer to the characters that you won't find on the page.

So excited for this book. This sneak peek was very intriguing. I would definitely pair the audio with the physical when it releases!

Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil by V.E. Schwab
V.E. Schwab returns with a story that is as eerie as it is intimate—a gothic meditation on grief, memory, and the ghosts we carry, both real and imagined.
Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil feels like reading a ghost story by candlelight: lyrical, unsettling, and soaked in shadow. Schwab’s prose is razor-sharp and atmospheric, with each line feeling carefully carved. She plays with silence and sorrow, crafting a world where the line between the living and the dead is thin, and where memory is both sanctuary and curse.
This isn’t a fast-paced fantasy—it’s slow-burning and introspective. The emotional depth is staggering, exploring how trauma roots itself deep in the soul, how pain echoes across time, and how some stories are buried until we’re ready to dig them up. The worldbuilding is minimal but rich in mood; think fog, forgotten houses, whispered truths, and the weight of the unsaid.
Schwab fans who love the emotional nuance of Addie LaRue and the darkness of Gallant will find something quietly devastating here. It’s not just a ghost story—it’s a reckoning.

Even just a sneak peek of the audiobook for Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil by V.E. Schwab is enough to leave a chill down your spine—and have you scrambling to listen to the full thing. Schwab's prose is as haunting and lyrical as ever, drawing you into a world that feels both intimate and unsettling from the first line.
The narration is pitch-perfect—moody, deliberate, and full of quiet tension. The atmosphere is thick with dread in all the best ways, and the characters already feel layered and intriguing, even in just a few chapters. It’s the kind of story that wraps around you like fog, and you can feel it getting colder with every word.
If this preview is any indication, the full audiobook is going to be an unforgettable descent into darkness. I’m already hooked.

Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil feels like a haunting lullaby. It is equal parts beautiful and unsettling. V.E. Schwab’s signature lyrical prose is on full display, wrapping grief, longing, and transformation in velvet darkness. The atmosphere is rich and immersive. You can practically taste the damp soil and feel the weight of forgotten things pressing up from beneath the surface.
The novella format works both for and against it. It’s a compact punch to the gut, but at times I wished for more space to explore the characters and world. Still, the emotional core hits hard, especially if you’ve ever loved something (or someone) that didn’t love you back in the way you hoped.
It’s not a story for everyone. It leans heavily on mood, metaphor, and melancholy. But if you enjoy quiet horror and poetic storytelling, this one will stay with you long after the final page.

This sneak peek has me mad because now I'm invested and want to read more and my libby hold is 2.5 months lol. Loving this narrator and can't wait to get my hands on it!

Great narration and intriguing concept. I understand why this has been so highly recommended! Personally I will be finishing this as an eyeball read due to the various characters/timelines which can be hard to keep track of on audio.

I will read absolutely anything V.E. Schwab writes, so naturally I had to pick this up. The narration is absolutely captivating. I can’t wait to find out what happens next!

V.E. Schwab has seized hold of my attention, and now I am dying to know what comes next. This excerpt has whetted my appetite to read more -- not only do I want to finish BURY OUR BONES IN THE MIDNIGHT SOIL, but now, I want to read everything Schwab has ever published,

I got a sneak peek for this book and I will be buying the book. Three different point of views and different eras. All take a life-altering change to find love.

This was a preview of this book. I love The Invisible Life of Addie Laroux so I was very excited about this. I devoured the sample and immediately went and bought the full version when it was available.

This book completely wrecked me—in the most beautiful way.
Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil is everything I love about V.E. Schwab’s writing: lyrical, haunting, and deeply emotional. There’s such a quiet power to her prose—every sentence feels deliberate, almost like a spell. It’s not flashy, just achingly beautiful. She has this gift for capturing the kind of grief that lives in your bones, the kind you can’t quite name but feel all the same.
The story is told through multiple narrators, each with a distinct voice and perspective, and I was genuinely impressed by how seamlessly Schwab shifts between them. Each one adds a different layer to the mystery and emotional weight of the book. The way the past and present intertwine kept me completely hooked—I loved how the story slowly revealed itself through echoes across time.
It’s gothic, atmospheric, and slow-burning in the best way. The shifting timelines aren’t just a narrative trick—they really deepen the sense of loss, legacy, and the way we carry (or bury) our histories. By the end, I felt like I had lived a hundred lives through these characters.
A ghost story, yes, but also a love story, a mourning song, and a quiet scream. One of my favorite reads this year. Highly recommend if you want something immersive, aching, and unforgettable.

Thank you for providing this sneak peek! I really enjoyed listening and cannot wait to read the entire book! I really enjoy reading books by the author and was thrilled to hear about a story with vampires. V.E. Schwab just has a way of totally captivating readers. I look forward to reading books in the future by this author.

This was just a sample of the book which I really appreciated getting because it got me hooked! I have had this book on my TBR and getting a glimpse into the world before receiving my physical copy had me wanting to start it right away. I went into this book blind only knowing that it was written by my favorite author and I was not disappointed! There were so many things I didn’t see coming it tore me right out of my reading slump! I have already recommended it to friends.

This sneak peak was so good- I’ve since bought two editions of this book no regrets. I’m obsessed with the writing. I have to admit this is my first book from the author but now want to go back to the backlist!

I loved this book! It's dark and addictive and an absolute masterpiece. This story had me hooked from the first line and I never looked back. The story is beautifully haunting- with a perfect mix of obsession and ruin.

The sneak peek was so good that I purchased the audiobook as soon as it was released. The narrators were excellent and the book was fabulous.
Thanks NetGalley and the audiobook publisher for the sneak peek.

Narrated by the powerhouse trio of Julia Whelan, Katie Leung, and Marisa Calin, the audio performance is nothing short of mesmerizing. Each voice brings a distinct and emotionally charged resonance to their respective timelines—1532, 1827, 2019—each one filled with women clawing at the edges of the cages the world has placed them in. The narration elevates the experience into something immersive and almost intoxicating. This is a 10/10 must for audiobook lovers.
At its heart, this is a novel about hunger—not just the literal thirst of vampiric transformation, but a deeper, more dangerous kind. The hunger to escape, to know, to be seen. María’s fiery rebellion in 16th-century Spain, Charlotte’s devastating romance in 19th-century London, and Alice’s raw, modern-day reckoning in Boston—they are three lives, three love stories, three tragedies, intertwined by something ancient and insatiable.

Kudos to the blurb for not giving the whole plot away. This is the kind of book you only want to skim the surface of before reading because the discovery is one of the best parts.
If you need characters you can root for, this is not the book for you. Their morality is a withered black, dip-dyed in red blood. That said, I disagree with labeling this book as “female rage.” It’s more like when the underdog becomes the vicious big dog. At first they bite out of vengeance, but then they bite just because they can. Any previous moral compass disintegrates into dust.
I always feel a little bit bad for any female narrator who co-voices a book with Julia Whelan. They could be at the top of their game but are always left holding Ms. Whelan’s beer.
Thank you to NetGalley and Tor Publishing Group for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
