It was a great sneak peak of Bury Our Bones In The Midnight Soil by V.E. Schwab.

The writing was good, the story was good, but I think it should have had more warning for people who don't want to read about lesbians.

I simply love all of V. E. Schwab's books. This was the first audiobook I've listened to in a while because it doesn't usually grab my attention. I started it and got stuck into the story, which I now have to re-read in book form. Really no matter what V writes, I need to read/hear it!

I cannot wait to read the whole thing! Thank you for the sneak peak!
I love how VE Schwab describes this as her toxic lesbian book.

I want more. The first 12 chapters of this book provided a solid introduction to the characters and setting of the story, not much intro into the plot line quite yet though. Guess I'll have to just get the book to see for myself! But the imagery, writing, and narration were enough to pique my interest.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the sneak peak, I am looking forward to reading the rest!

I NEED MORE. I know that this is a sneak peak but I was literally on the edge of my seat, These characters are so engaging and the story was just starting to take off! So far, I am invested in the characters and really want to know what is going to happen with these women. I immediately went to Libby and put in a hold request.

The narrators were great and I enjoyed that it is three distinct voices.

Thank you so much to Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for this arc!

The narration was FANTASTIC and exactly what i expected yet still better than what I could have even asked for? The story telling is delicious and I’m just so intrigued! Thank you for the sample! I was already excited to read this, but now I truly cannot wait!!

Wow! What a phenomenal audiobook sneak peak. The narrators were fantastic and the writing was gripping.

The only real critique I had was, besides the vampires, this felt very much like a self given autobiography. There was no plot that I could tell besides the girls just telling their stories. I’ve seen a couple other people say the same thing and that just might keep me from finishing the book!

To be honest I've only ever read one V.E.Schwab book before, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, and it just wasn't for me. I said I'd probably never read another one of her books again but when I saw this sneak peak on Net Galley, I figured it was the perfect chance to give her another try. I'm glad I did! I liked that this book was almost parallel to that real life could be like and didn't seem that far out there. I liked the characters and felt an almost immediately connected to them. I'm definitely going to be getting this book to finish it! Thank you for giving me this sneak peak and a chance to try this book out!

Well. I was very mad that this was just a SNEAK PEEK and not the full book. So.. i hope the rest of the book is good?

Thank you to NetGalley for gifting me this eARC in exchange for my honest review. I appreciate it!

V. E. Schwab’s Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil begins with a haunting, lyrical intensity that will feel instantly familiar to her devoted readers—yet fresh enough to intrigue newcomers. In this early glimpse, Schwab once again demonstrates her mastery of the macabre and the magical, weaving together an atmosphere rich in shadow, longing, and the aching persistence of memory.

The tone is both introspective and eerie, with an undercurrent of emotional tension that suggests a story rooted in buried trauma and quiet reckoning. Listeners are introduced to a setting that feels gothic and surreal, as if the soil itself holds secrets not meant to surface. Schwab’s language is deliberate and poetic, creating vivid imagery that lingers long after each chapter ends.

Though only a sneak peek, this excerpt hints at complex themes—grief, belonging, and the ghosts we carry within us—while teasing a narrative that feels both intimate and otherworldly. The audiobook narration captures the melancholic beauty of Schwab’s prose and enhances the immersive quality of the story.

I'll include my review of the full book, but I couldn't pass up the chance to ge5t a sneak peak of the audio! I loved even the small glimpse we got and I'm excited to listen to it again someday soon!
Book review:
Spoilers at the bottom!!
If you loved Addie LaRue you will love this book as well! This is a very character driven story with not a whole lot of plot. I personally loved it anyway. The writing is just as beautiful as you want it to be and V. E. Schwab just has a way of writing characters that you want to know more about. I will say that Sabine's chapters were my favorite. I loved being in her mind and seeing the world through her eyes. I also truly was excited about how the book was broken up. Being told what women we are following and having a few chapters with each made it so much of a better experience! My main problem with the book is it was so long and we learned so much and it seemed to wrap up extremely quickly. Overall it was an amazing book and I can't wait for more people to read it!
SPOILERS AHEAD
My main complaint is the ending. It was so quick and felt like there was no pay off. We see Alice lose everything for no reason. Charlotte out of no where is also evil or I missed some chapters. I also really didn't care for Alice. It felt like if we didn't have her in the book not much would change. Other than that it was one of my favorites and I can't wait to own the book!

I absolutely loved this audio sneak peek! The narrator was soothing and emotional and perfect for the story. I would 100% recommend the audio of this book. I read the physical copy of this book and LOVED it. It would be fun to do an immersion read.

I got access to a preview of the first 12 chapters of the audiobook from NetGalley, and when I finished those 12 chapters, I immediately had to buy the audiobook to keep listening. The narrators were great!

If you ever felt that Vampire Diaries needed a sapphic plot line, this may be the book for you.

Lesbian. Vampires. Need I say more? Ok, a little more: It’s about hunger. About wanting more. It’s about grief. It’s about freedom. This novel really did defy genres. It’s primarily historical fiction and fantasy with a touch of romance. It had me in its grip for all three storylines.

I will say the ending felt a little too fast, given that the three storylines were so winding. Everything felt wrapped up too quickly. Part of me understands the art in understatement, but there could have been more struggle. And while we get a ton of history, I wanted more lore. It felt like a missed opportunity.

I was so bummed that this wasn't an ARC for the whole book. The sneak preview was amazing and I can't wait until the hold at the library is ready!

Julia Whelan, Katie Leung, and Marisa Calin all do a wonderful job narrating Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil. The first twelve chapters had me hooked, and I only wish that this was the entire audiobook and not just a sneak peak! I cannot wait to finish listening to this story because I need to know what happens to Maria, Charlotte and, Alice. I love that it time hops and is set in three different time periods. I'm always a sucker for different timelines in a story when it is done right, and this is definitely done right.
