Water Lies by new to me author Amy Meyerson, published by Thomas & Mercer is an haunting pageturner, telling the story of Tessa and Barb. Two mothers looking for answers regarding their daughters.
An intense journey that left me breathless, with story and characters that'll stay with me. I recommend the book, 5 stars.

This book!! Intuition, murder, familial bonds with a backdrop of the canals in Venice Beach made this story entirely unique. Trust my instincts…this book will be a best seller! Amy Meyerson kept me engaged from beginning to end, so hard to put down, very well done~ Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, it is a sure thing!

Amy Myerson’s first venture into the mystery genre is a winner which drew me in immediately and held me captive until the very end. Myerson has a knack for building suspense gradually, one incident at a time. As the tension builds it becomes obvious that the two women, one the mother of a woman found dead in what the police call an accident and the other, heavily pregnant with her second child and coping with a toddler who might know something he is unable to verbalize, are headed for danger and a distressing truth.

Both Tessa and Barb chafe at the off-handed way they are treated by the police and Tessa’s husband. Barb at 70 something hates being unseen as an “invisible” older woman and Tessa is frustrated each time her very real concerns are passed off as hysterical and hormone induced. Yet both women often jump to emotional conclusions that don’t pan out. Still, they are on the right track, and they gradually forge a relationship of trust as they search for the truth. Tessa and Barb are relatable and sympathetic characters. I found their sometimes quick and often emotional reactions were understandable due to Myerson’s use of their inner thoughts and her skillful introduction of just enough backstory.

A spattering of false leads keeps the two women, and the reader, guessing, while Venice, California, adds the spooky element of a world where everyone is watching and the question of whether this makes life safer or more dangerous. The Water Lies is far more than a tale of female amateur sleuths. Behind the mystery, the novel deals with important themes of motherhood, aging, family, the importance of trust, and the pros and cons of IVF.

This book was heartwarming even though it was about a murderer. It was very nice to see Claire and Barb be able to have a bond after everything they learned and found out together. I feel like you don’t normally see that in books, especially the mystery thriller kind.
I really liked this book, I like how we bounced between Claire and Barbs POV. The concerned pregnant lady that had an itching about the murder and the victims mom were two different points to have but they were very good.
About half way, the book started to drag a little bit. But however things picked back up and I was very surprised about who the murderer actually was. I never even considered it, I was for sure sold it was who Barb believed second!

I absolutely adored this book! 4.25/5

Despite the characters having very obvious flaws, I ended up adoring and feeling so much empathy towards both Tessa and Barb as I continued to read the book. I thought the twists in this book were very unique and focused on a topic I don't think I've ever seen in a thriller. Plus, I love a book with multiple POVs and where I'm constantly changing my mind on who the "villain" is throughout the book, those 2 things keep me turning the page constantly! Would love to read more books by the author in the future!

A real page turner! You will find yourself wanting to read one more chapter, over and over, until you find yourself finished with the book. As alway, Meyerson’s attention to character development stands out. You will feel like the characters are your friends which will add to the suspense and keep you guessing what will happen next and wondering who is telling the truth and who has secrets. The plot is unique and very timely and will leave you thinking long after you are done reading! A great read and another successful story by this talented author.

Ok, I was really, really excited to read this one. The synopsis sucked me in and got my hopes up. Unfortunately, it fell a bit flat for me. I can't really pinpoint exactly what it was but it just didn't hit the mark. There was intrigue and mystery as they tried to figure out whodunnit, but it just wasn't super attention grabbing. I didn't find myself getting connected to any of the characters (and something about Gabe was just annoying from the start!) and while I finished the book, it wasn't one that I found myself unable to put down.

I do appreciate Netgalley and the publisher for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
