This book was very clear and straightforward with the patterns and the instructions. I just feel like it didn't have anything different than any other crochet book I've looked at for animals

These patterns are so cute! They are simplified which I love so I'm not digging through a ton of extra info.

I have been crocheting for a few months, primarily amigurumi critters, so I was pleased to be able to access this book on NetGalley. I made the fox, the dolphin, then stretched a bit and made the sea turtle and all came out really well. The patterns are easy to follow and the pictures are helpful. I especially appreciated the video for the turtle shell, which I watched before attempting it, and it helped a lot. I like the finished size of the critters, as they allow me to complete a whole animal in a relatively short period of time and feel that sense of accomplishment. There are a few hiccups here and there (for example there’s no instruction to stuff the body of the turtle, when it is clearly intended to be), but overall it’s a great book. It does assume some basic crochet skills already, so I would not suggest a complete novice dive in with this, but you really only have to have comfort with basic stitches to get going on these patterns. I found the dolphin very simple and think it’s a good place to start.

This book is so cute with such great little creatures.
I'm still finding my feet as a beginner in crochet. Some of the designs are easier and I'm yet to dare and try some of the more complex one's still.
So far my efforts can definitely improve but I'm having so much fun trying these cute designs!!!

Wonderful guide for experience levels. I love that each tutorial was so simple and clear and included pictures to help individuals who are more visual.

Thank you Netgalley for the ARC.

I loved this book! The patterns are so well written and fun. I will be purchasing a physical copy to keep in my craft room.

This is a pretty nice collection of patterns, complete with pictures of the process. This book won’t teach you how to crochet, but I would say it is pretty beginner friendly as it is mostly single crochet, increase, and decrease. I wouldn’t expect a book of patterns to teach me to crochet, but I did see that in another review so I figured I’d mention it. You must know some basic stitches. That’s beginner level. I will say a few of the patterns are very similar, so much that I have a hard time considering them to be different patterns. It is a nice book though and would have no qualms about recommending it to folks who like to make cute squishy things.

These animals were so cute! The patterns were easy to read and easy to follow. I really thought that it was open to all different levels of crocheters. I particularly loved the unique animals apart of the book.

A nice book of patterns.

I like that the author:
-shows the right vs wrong side of stitches (it's super common for beginners to have their work inside out)
-shows YO vs YU
-uses invisible decreases
-uses staggering increases to make circles
-specifies that she's using US terms

There are fewer photos than a beginner might want, so these patterns are probably better for people who already know what they're doing.

I'm not a huge fan of some patterns calling for pellets and magnets instead of just stuffing, but that isn't a big deal.

Thank you Cider Mill Press for the ARC of Amigurumi Critters! As a longtime crocheter, I was delighted by this book- the designs were adorable, and the instructions were easy to follow with some experience in the craft. The step by step photo instructions are very helpful as well. I recommend this book to other crafters looking for new patterns or a new hobby altogether.

When one of my favorite crafters posted a few of the critters from this book, I knew I had to get my hands on it. If you love adorable amigurumi creatures, mostly intermediate patterns, and x-shaped crochet (using the yarn-under technique for tighter stitches), you will adore this book!

I can tell so much care and love went into Amigurumi Critters, from the detailed and full color pages to the guides for difficult techniques. The animals in this book are deceptively simple, but require tons of craft and precision and Ting guides the reader so well through any of the tricky parts. I particularly appreciated the breakout views of the lace-like pattern for Aria and Noah the Sea Turtles and the before and after diagrams showing finishing touches on Puddles the Penguin. In the time that I had this ARC, I made: Taffy the Axolotl, Aria and Noah the Turtles, and Orion the Sea Star, choices I made mostly because of the color yarn I had on hand. Each animal took me a few days in between other tasks, and they all turned out a pretty decent size (I use worsted/size 4 yarn, because I enjoy working with larger hooks).

One of the things I love most about this book is the guide at the beginning. Often in crochet books and magazines, I find the guide to be a little too cursory, but this one explained so many things beautifully: from x-shaped stitches to the usage of particular types of hooks/tapestry needles, it's abundant how well Ting knows her craft and it eliminated so much of the frantic googling I've done in the past to figure out where my technique went wrong. My only beef is because my copy was digital, I couldn't mark it up as I love to do with my printed patterns. I will definitely pick up more books and patterns by Ting in the future! These were so fun and turned out beautifully.

Many thanks to NetGalley, Cider Mill Press, and Amy Ting for gifting me this e-ARC in exchange for my honest review!

I'm not at all a crafty person, but I really enjoyed this book :)

I received a crochet craft kit for my birthday and wanted to jump into it. But whenever I looked up videos or tried to read manuals on crocheting, I just couldn't connect. I got this book through Netgalley's summer camp session and I'm glad I gave it a shot!

I won't lie and say I was suddenly a master at crochet because of this book (I wish!). But I appreciated that the instructions were easy to understand and that there were designs for all skill levels, so I could work my way up. Overall, I'd recommend this book for beginners!

Honestly, right out of the gate this book had me. I loved the author’s commentary on her inquisitive nature and wondering why for everything. And then she carries on to explain tips, tricks, and ways to prevent strain from the get-go in tools? BE STILL MY HEART.

I had hoped that there would be some more entry level things in here, because I’m still learning, but I loved that she has references to her online tutorials to help get you there.

The images and QR codes are helpful, and while I wonder about the longevity of them being usable, there are enough extra details in this book that even if those don’t work, you’re set.

The finished object images are cute, and I like the contrast of the crocheted creatures with the paper backgrounds.

This book has a nice variety of critters, and the patterns are not too similar. I tried the shark and the dolphin, so far. The shark and I had ... issues, and I gave up for now. The dolphin is going ok so far, and should be one I can complete soon. For the most part the instructions are easy to follow, and the terminology is close enough to what I am used to that I could catch on pretty easily, though images like an inside-out critter to show how the author handles color changes on her critters would have been helpful in the shark pattern. The author does have online resources though, so I am sure if I really want a shark like the one in her photos I could make it happen with the combined resources of this book and her videos. The critter I was drawn in by was the frog, so I may try making one after I finish the dolphin. I am an intermediate crocheter, but new to amigurumi, and I found this book approachable, and I especially liked the explanations of why one should do the amigurumi-specific tricks and techniques Ting advises in her instructions.

Amigurumi Critters by Amy Ting is a delightful crochet book with darling little creatures to crochet. The instructions seem to be clear and understandable, although I didn't make anything from the book because I haven't had time. My favorite is the fox! For those of us who love Amigurumi, this is a wonderful book to add to your collection!
