I'm a beginner/intermediate at crocheting so I was pretty excited to get to review this book. Amigurumi is a lot of fun and easier than people might think. Amy did a great job in keeping the patterns simple and easy to understand and follow. So far I have made one from the easier, one from the middle, and plan to make a harder one soon. My kids loved seeing the pictures to help them pick which they wanted me to make for them.

Thank you to Amy and NetGalley for the chance to review this!

I’ll admit it—I can’t crochet. Not even a chain stitch. But after flipping through Amigurumi Critters, I’ve never wanted to learn more in my life!

This book is absolutely packed with the cutest little creations I’ve ever seen. Every critter has its own personality, and the photos are so vibrant and detailed, I found myself grinning just turning the pages. I kept thinking, “Wait… I could actually make that?” Which is wild, because until now, crochet has always felt way too intimidating.

What I really appreciated was how approachable the instructions are. Amy Ting does a fantastic job of breaking things down clearly, without overwhelming a total beginner like me. She even includes helpful tips and explanations that make it feel possible to dive in, even if you’re starting from scratch.

Even though I haven’t made my first critter yet, I already feel inspired and motivated to pick up a hook and give it a try. This book doesn’t just teach—it encourages. And if I can figure it out, I know I’ll be surrounded by a whole crew of tiny yarn animals in no time! And the first ones will most definitely be Samson and Scout, the spiders!

If you’re curious about crochet, or just love the idea of crafting something adorable with your own hands, this book is the perfect place to start. Thank you, NetGalley!

Amy Ting’s Amigurumi Critters is a beautiful book with some adorable patterns. There are some animals you often see in Amigurumi books (I never need another penguin pattern, for example), but there are others that seem truly unique. I can’t wait to try some of these patterns though. I’m particularly drawn to the frog and the fox, but that otter looks like it will work up beautifully as well.

Before Ting gets to the patterns, there are some excellent instructions on how to do specific stitches and other tips. It’s all pretty standard for a crochet book, but will be useful for anyone who’s new to the craft. I did notice that Ting prefers a yarn under single crochet rather than the traditional yarn over , but I’m sure you could use either as long as you’re consistent.

Despite how much I love the patterns in this book, the book itself has some accessibility issues. The light text on a white page is challenging to read sometimes, as is the color on color text (for example, a light pink background with darker pink text). There needs to be more contrast if you want it to be readable by everyone. So, 5 stars for content, but 3 for usability and design leaves me with 4 stars.

Thanks to Cider Mill Press & NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. This book will publish on June 17, 2025.

Great wee book filled with lots of patterns. My only problem is deciding which I'll tackle first.

This was a fun and easy to read listing of some interesting patterns! They were perfect for a relative beginner and covered a variety of types of creatures. I would recommend this for people looking for relatively quick but new patterns. Could be used with the smaller yarn but even the fluffier yarns made for soft stuffy-like projects.

*Amigurumi Critters: 25 Imaginative Crochet Designs for All Skill Levels* by Amy Ting is full of charming and creative crochet projects. I appreciated how the patterns are clearly organized by difficulty level, which makes it easy for both beginners and experienced crafters to find a suitable starting point. The author’s introductory letter is warm and encouraging, and the overview of required tools is helpful. I also liked the inclusion of QR codes that link to recommended supplies, which adds convenience.

The variety of critters is delightful, with the penguin and sloth standing out as personal favorites. Each project includes multiple photos showing both the finished item and the individual steps, along with detailed pattern instructions and a full list of materials. There are also technique pages with full-color images and QR codes linking to helpful YouTube videos.

Unfortunately, the book is seriously hindered by some poor graphic design choices. Several pages feature white text on light-colored backgrounds, making them very difficult to read. This significantly impacts the usability of the book. While the project ideas themselves are wonderful, the readability issues are frustrating enough that I cannot recommend the book for practical use. I would rate it 2 out of 5 stars, mainly for the cuteness and creativity of the designs. I received an advanced reader copy from NetGalley and Cider Mill Press.

Plenty of cute creatures to crochet and create! They had some creatures I hardly ever see in crochet amigurimi books! The instructions are very easy to follow and include indicators for those who are earlier in their practice!

Amigurumi Critters by Amy Ting is a wealth of crochet information and multiple patterns with well laid out instructions.

There are a lot of birds for example, but it gives (and shows) all the varieties that can be done, instead of only a suggestion, which some other books do. The multiple patterns with step by step instructions, and level of the project is also appreciated because you know going in if you need to pay attention to more complex stitches.

I also loved the eyes of the turtles, it very much gave them a personality, and the extra step made it stand out from other patterns.

Included in certain parts are QR codes to see videos, and I thought that was great for someone just starting to help explain the stitches.

Overall a very good book for someone wanting to start amigurumi!

A superb collection with everything a crocheter wants. The patterns are easy to follow and work up in a couple sittings. The design of the images and their prominence in the book are so fun and inspiring. This is something that you just can’t get in an online pattern. The value for the collection is also considerable.

Crochet is my new obsession, has been for a while now, and I couldn’t resist requesting this ARC; the animals are adorable!

There are beginner, intermediate & expert patterns and the steps are explained very well and easy to follow. I’ve only made one of the animals so far but I’ve looked through and all the patterns look easy enough to follow.

If you’re new to crochet this is a good place to start as there’s handy hints and tips included, for example; how to create a magic circle, what certain terms mean, how to change colour, etc.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review
