Libby DeLana writes, "Our relationship with the cold is complicated. We huddle up, crank the heat, fly south like birds and butterflies for the winter. Our lore is filled with sinister ice queens, whipping winds, and blinding blizzards." But she also adds, "My story is different now. Cold is inviting and awakening. Cold is a teacher and a friend. It has been a steady companion, a precious gift, a truth-teller, and an agent of change."

With open and honest essays of her experiences paired with bold full-color, full-page photographs and hints of history and personal lessons, this gorgeous book is simply lovely.

DeLana's prose is like beautiful poetry. "I spent the first days of December 2023 tucked into the contours of this magical Wabanaki land, dancing down the trail with six mermaids searching for a perfect pool of water. Contrary to popular belief, mermaids make excellent hikers."

Immensely readable, like a conversation with a likeable companion. (Her water-themed playlist is fun.) And quotable. I enjoyed these pages.

"The water is where my soul is anchored. And really, that's all I ever needed to know."

Unlike clinical approaches to cold therapy, this book seems to offer a more intuitive, spiritually-grounded path that could appeal to readers seeking transformation beyond mere physical benefits.

Cold Joy by Libby DeLana is such a sweet book making me want to take the cold plunge! Libby has a unique writing style that made me feel like I was going along with her in this journey. I love the helpful tips on cold plunge and I’ve tried it a few times myself. I love how calming Libby makes cold plunge feel. Describing the nature of it all and the peacefulness.

It was an easy read, I finished it in 2 nights. And the very next day, filled up my tub with icy cold water and stayed in it for a little while. I love the addition of helpful websites and YouTube videos on cold plunge as well.

“As long as you’re happy, healthy, safe, and fulfilled, you’re doing it right.”

I live in Maine, so I've seen (from the sidelines) the power of a group of people doing a cold plunge together and have heard many people swear by it as a way to jump start their day, feel refreshed and help support their wellness journeys.

This was an insightful and educational read with a playful tone that encouraged me to want to go jump in the lake in the winter!

PS a water-themed community building playlist? Say less.
