The Water Remembers is one of the most beautiful books I've read in a long time.
Amy Bowers Cordalis details her nation's fight to save the Klamath River and the salmon that call it home in a way that mixes history with current events. The incredible detail is both impressive and so helpful in understanding the deep historical connection to the activism of Amy's family, as is the vulnerability that comes with sharing your family's story with the world. As an Anishinaabe person whose nation is currently fighting to save the moose population in our territory, this book was also very emotional. You could really feel the emotions that the writer and her colleagues and family experienced when the fish kill happened.
As someone from so-called Canada, I didn't know about the Yurok Nation's fight to save the Klamath. This book is essential to those learning about Indigenous law and natural resources in both the so-called United States and so-called Canada. I learned so much and am very grateful to the author who not only documented the history of the activism of her nation, but also the work she put in to get her law degree in order to work for her nation and for the water.
I can't wait for more people to read this book.
