This was an excellent book. It was well-written.
At times it was hard to read but it's worth reading.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the ARC.

This is an honest, detailed, and reflective memoir from a biracial war veteran.
Dylan Park-Pettiford writes about joining the military as a young man inspired by Pat Tillman, and from there he takes us through the realities of war, grief, and the challenges of coming home. He also writes very openly about the breakdown of his marriage and the emotional fallout that followed.
I thought the structure and pacing worked well, and I found the parts about his family’s military history really interesting. What stayed with me most, though, was his relationship with his brother—and the sense of loss that runs through the book. I received an advanced review copy from NetGalley and this is my honest review.

I received a copy for review. All opinions are my own. This book was an up close and personal look at what it was like for one man to serve his country and wow I felt so many emotions while reading this. The brutal honesty was a hard pill to swallow but this was an important look at what a person goes through physically AND mentally. I learned a lot about the author’s life before enlisting and even after when he navigated his attempt to return to the “normal” world and grappled with the loss of people close to him. Definitely a book everyone should read.
