Thank you Netgalley, Chronicle Books, and Karen Solomon for sending me this advanced review copy for free. I am leaving this review voluntarily

I never knew there were so many different types of pickles!

I adore the illustrations in this book. They are so bright and fun, and the vintage vibe was perfect.

The main types of pickles we learned about were quick pickles, refrigerator pickles, fermented, and salt cured. I appreciate that it was so much more than just cucumbers. There were pickled brussel sprouts, cabbage, seafood, and a ton of other fruits and veggies as well.

I love how it was separated into sections, like sour, savory-ish, sweet-ish, and spicy-ish. It made it so much easier to find the flavor of pickle that I would want. There are pickles from all over the world, and I want to make all of them.

The pickle facts were really entertaining, and I am always ready to learn some tips and tricks.

Overall this is a really great book, and I think a beginner cook could tackle any of these recipes. This would make a fun gift, and is pretty enough to sit on your coffee table too.

This has to be one of the prettiest cook books. I loved the feel of the writing and the art. It felt like we were at a farmers market stall learning about their pickles and how they make them. The bunting on the tops of the pages and the cartoon, but still detailed drawings were some highlights of the book. The pickle facts were interesting and not lengthy at all. I found myself looking forward to reading them when they showed up.
I feel like a good range of recipes were mentioned, and there is a type of pickle here that anyone could make.
The recipes are easy to follow, I was unsure of the formatting not being traditional, but you have no issue reading the ingredients and the instructions at all. It makes it feel more laid back and fun. The ingredients used were 95% easy ones to find for most people. A few specialty ones mentioned, but most could be bought online probably. I am definitely making some of these recipes and I am so happy I picked this up.

LOVE the illustrations and writing in the pickle recipe book. I loved the "pickle facts" and approachability of this book. The cover really called to me and I was not disappointed by the contents. I really liked that each recipe paints how the pickle you're making can be a whole moment. And even though I normally prefer a photo of what the final product should look like, I think the whimsical choice to have illustrations adds to the charm and fun of this cookbook. Thank you for the opportunity to read it (and test out some yummy new pickles!).

Pickles, Illustrated is such a charming and helpful guide for anyone looking to get into pickling and fermenting! The artistic illustrations make it extra fun to flip through, and the recipes are straightforward and beginner-friendly—perfect if you’re feeling overwhelmed by more complex guides. I'm especially excited to grow cucumbers in my garden this year and try out more of these recipes with homegrown produce. Highly recommend this book to fellow beginners or anyone looking to expand their pickling game with ease and creativity!

I selected All Things Pickling thinking it would just be a basic book about making pickles with cucumbers. But I was pleasantly surprised—it’s so much more than that! The book goes into the history and science behind pickling and includes all kinds of creative recipes, like pickled strawberries and spiced green beans.

What I liked most is how simple and fun the author makes everything. The directions are easy to follow, and the little pickle facts throughout the book kept things interesting and light.

If you enjoy pickles or just want to try something different in the kitchen, I definitely recommend this book. It’s an easy, fun read with lots of great ideas!

A huge thank you to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for the opportunity to read this advance copy.

My heart stopped when I saw this lovely gem of a #book. As a passionate and avid pickle lover, I thought this beautifully illustrated, vibrantly colored work was pitch perfect for the spring season and nearing summer.

This one hits shelves in September 2025, and is a #musthave for every #salty, #briny, #pickle loving #chef and #recipe lover in your life, with its fun, spirited illustrations, fun facts about pickles in general, pickleback shots, famous pickle creations, the Christmas Pickle, Kimchi Day (a fantastic holiday in Korea that incorporates pickles), the idiom “in a pickle”, and more, and 36 #recipes, all centering around – yes – pickles.

Some of the best inclusions I would give a personal shout-out to: the recipes for Pickled Red Onions (a personal favorite of mine), Torshi (the term for pickles in the Middle East, Armenia, and Afghanistan), Sauerkraut (another personal favorite of mine), Green Strawberry Salsa, Bread and Butter Pickles (another much beloved favorite of mine), Cinnamon Clove Pickled Peaches, Coconut Cilantro Chutney, British Pub Pickle, Kimchi (another favorite of mine), and Greek Mango Pickles – among many other fun (and quick and simple) creations!

A fascinating book about different types of pickles and their processes. I absolutely love pickles and pickled items, so I immediately downloaded this book and read through it. As an amateur fridge pickle maker myself I’m excited to try out a few of these recipes myself.

I did love that the book was illustrated, however, I feel like a few real pictures would have been nice as well. The random pickle facts thrown in throughout the book were also enjoyable as well as the brief and concise descriptions about each item prior to the recipe.

Dividing the book into flavor profiles was so smart and helpful for getting the vibes. I will absolutely be buying a physical copy of this book once it comes out.

This is the cookbook I never knew I needed. I loved riding on, as the author says, “The great pickle highway.” She includes information of tools needed, or rather not needed; and she even mentions tips that would have never crossed my mind. Like, not all salt is created equal… who woulda thunk. I really like that she gives the reader/cook methods to make pickles that have a lot of wiggle room. I have the freedom to combine different flavor profiles, make them a certain level of tenderness, and pick out how strong I want the flavors. This is good info for a newb pickler. It is not written in a classic recipe style which is a bit disorienting, but I kind of like how that forces me to read everything before I plow in. Also, watermelon rind pickles? Wow, what a concept. I really enjoy her pickle facts sprinkled throughout the book. I find that some of these recipes are not “authentic” per se. Having lived in Asia, some of the Asian ones aren’t what you’d necessarily taste there, but still fun and delicious. Lastly, there is a decent range of common, easy to find ingredients versus specialty ingredients that you’d have to go out of your way to find. After testing out her recipes it’s nice to have “fresh” pickles.

I am a pickle girlie and I loved this. I often say my favorite food is vinegar. I will have to report back on the recipes (some interesting ones in there!) but I love and encourage anything to do with tsukemono.

Holy ADORABLE!

How freaking cute is this little cookbook.

I’m obsessed with pickles, and most things pickled, so when I saw this I immediately grabbed the arc!

The illustrations are to die for. The cute little “Pickle Facts” interspersed are a perfect way to break up the recipes.

As for the recipes themselves, I really thought I would get a full book of pickles but this has a wide variety! Sauerkraut, pickled shrimp, coconut cilantro chutney, and so much more!

The only downside is the way the ingredients are listed. Rather than a list format they are bolded and underlined throughout the recipe, honestly fine, but not my preferred style in a book of recipes.

Thank you NetGalley and Chronicle Books for the gifted book. All opinions are my own.

Five—infinite?—pickled stars!

As something of a pickle connoisseur, I was immediately drawn to this book for... obvious reasons. I’ve never attempted to make my own pickles—my talents have always leaned more toward enthusiastic consumption—but after reading this, I’m ready to dive into the brine. The canning supplies are already in my Amazon cart.

The quirky charm of the illustrations completely won me over. Not only is the book visually adorable (I’m genuinely considering framing a few pages), but it’s also organized in a way that feels practical and unintimidating. I fully plan to purchase a physical copy and display it proudly—maybe on my coffee table, maybe on a shrine dedicated to fermented delights.

Also: how have I gone this long without knowing I could be feeding pickle juice to my hydrangeas? I feel like I owe my plants a heartfelt apology and a crunchy little treat.

I’d recommend this book to anyone—even the pickle-averse. It’s charming, informative, and just downright fun.

Thank you to NetGalley, Chronicle Books, and Karen Solomon for the absolute privilege of receiving this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
