I love the Kane and Alton series and this episode did not disappoint. Very well written . Lots of backstory which is very much my cup of tea. Had me guessing the ultimate culprit until the very end which is a plus. Plenty of suspense throughout. Look forward to the next offering when they have baby Jackson to look after. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to review it.

Detectives Kane and Alton #26

When news of a missing limousine reaches Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane, they fear for the lives of the ten teenagers who were inside and should have been enjoying their prom night. After picking up each teenager from their home, instead of heading to prom, the car turned towards the darkness of the forest around Black Rock Falls. Has their been a tragic accident, or has something more sinister happened to the teenagers.?

Wow Book 26 and this series has never disappointed me. I love all the regular main characters, and it's good that they all get along and welcome new members to the team. Jenna, still heavily pregnant, and Dave are enjoying a well-deserved day off when they receive a phone call that ten missing teens never showed up for their prom. It looks like Jenna and Dave are dealing with a copycat killer, but there is one addition on the bodies - Not Mine. Jenna and her team work around the clock to find the clues to lead them to the killer.

This fast-paced read is filled with twists. D,K. Hood is a fantastic author and I can't wait to read what's next for Dave and Jenna.

I have been reading this series since the beginning and after all this time it is still one of my favourite series and I look forward to each new book! The story starts with a bang and you're drawn straight in. I was hooked from the very start and the tensions were high throughout. I love it when the whole team is involved and how they are like family to each other. The ending was sweet whilst leaving me intrigued for what's to come! Thanks to Bookouture for the advanced copy!

It's prom night. 5 dead bodies are found. Does the town have a serial killer on the loose? Will Sherif Alton and her husband, Deputy Kane be able to stop the killer before he strikes again?

I loved this book. D.K. Hood is a phenomenal writer who has a way into the mind. This book has suspense, stress, action, and danger that will grip you and not let go until the very end. The characters are great and the book really ties up some loose ends, while leaving you begging for the next in the series.

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the eARC!

This latest installment in the Detective Jenna Alton series is a gritty, fast-paced thriller that hits the ground running—literally. From the eerie disappearance of a limo full of prom-goers to the grim discovery of carefully staged bodies in the forest, the stakes rise quickly and relentlessly. It's a haunting premise, and author D.K. Hood executes it with tension and urgency.

The story flows smoothly, and the pacing never lets up. What makes it especially compelling, though, is the strength of its characters. Jenna Alton and David Kane are more than just investigators—they’re a well-matched, emotionally grounded team whose bond and banter add warmth and familiarity to an otherwise chilling story. It's been a pleasure watching these characters evolve over the series, growing more layered with each book.

Set in the quirky, serial-killer-magnet town of Black Rock Falls, the novel embraces its dark setting without ever becoming over-the-top. There's a real sense of danger here—particularly given the number of young victims—which gives the book a gritty, unsettling edge. The nods to previous cases and the suggestion of a copycat killer also add an extra layer of intrigue for longtime fans of the series.

In short: a gripping, atmospheric crime novel with strong leads, relentless suspense, and just the right amount of emotional depth. If you enjoy thrillers that balance character development with high stakes, this is one to read—with the lights on.

There is always another vile killer in Black Rock Falls a/k/a Serial Killer Central. This one was especially disturbing because all of the victims are taken at once in the beginning, and then the frightening days and nights begin for these poor young girls.

Prom night should be a night a group of teenage girls and boys will never forget. Unfortunately, this night will not be forgotten not because of fun, but will be remembered as a night of terror for this community. The limousine that is transporting them to the prom disappears without a trace.

Sheriff Jenna Alton is very pregnant, but when she receives the call about the missing teens, she is determined to be a part of the investigation. Kane, Alton and company are the best of the best, but this killer is also very savvy. When the bodies start piling up, it becomes chillingly obvious someone is playing games with people's lives and getting his kicks doing it. This particular killer was especially evil and took great joy in making promises, that he has no intention of keeping, to a group of frightened teenage girls. I got chill bumps reading this book.

This is another winner in this fantastic series. The author continues to build the characters while showing them at work, but also giving us a glimpse into their personal lives. I feel as if I know these characters personally after reading so many of these books. I love a good serial killer thriller, but what I really enjoy about books written by this author is that they are clean. The plot is scary and disturbing, but she handles those scenes with finesse. I also like the pacing of these books. They are easy to read with short chapters without too much information. She just gets to the point. I highly recommend this book, this series and anything written by this author. If you enjoy mysteries, serial killer thrillers, as well as cat and mouse games, you will devour this book, just like I did.

A big thank.you to NetGalley and Book out it's for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This is part of an ever growing series, that could be a bit.overwhelming for first time readers. I would start with book one. Shocking how many serial.killers there are in this small town. Sheriff Jenna Alton is heavily pregnant, but insists on being involved. Good story. Lots of suspense. End happens quick. 4 stars

I love returning to Black Rock Falls to see what new killer Jenna and the team must hunt down. I enjoy catching up with what's new in their lives. This was another thrilling page turner. The author manages to keep it fresh and entertaining with continued character development and great suspenseful and sometimes creepy cases. I can't wait for the next book.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC.

When a limousine carrying five couples to their prom disappears you'd think ‘tragic accident’, but of course this is Blackrock Falls so it could never be as simple as that, not in serial murder central.
Brilliantly evil, the horrendous depravity of the plot will stun you. I really don't know how the author can come up with so many gripping ideas, but here we are in the 26th instalment, and it's all as fresh as the first.
Another engrossing read in this excellent series which I read in one day.
The subplot continues to delight, too. The ending is lovely, but not without an overheard comment that lays the ground for even more intrigue to come.

When news of a missing limousine reaches Sheriff Jenna Alton and her deputy, David Kane, they fear for the lives of the ten teenagers who were inside and should have been enjoying their prom night. After picking up each passenger from their home, instead of heading to prom, the car turned toward the darkness of the forest around Black Rock Falls. Hours later, Jenna’s team discovers the bodies of the five boys from the car, and her heart shatters when she realizes the girls are still missing. The killer has taken them, and he hasn’t left a single trace. Jenna knows time is running out for the teenagers when a lifeless body is discovered hanging from the branches of a tree, and another is found laying on a boulder nearby, still wearing her prom dress. Taking in the scene, she spots something that makes her pulse race – the girls’ bodies have been displayed just like on a previous murder case she worked. With three young girls unaccounted for, Jenna’s team works around the clock in the dense woodland looking for clues before they find themselves under attack as well.
The twenty sixth book in the series & another very well written, edge of the seat thriller. I love both Dave & Jenna & love how I’ve got to know them throughout the series & how their relationship has grown. Jenna is on a tight time frame as she’s heavily pregnant. Strong characters, a fast paced story had the pages flying by & I was loathe to put it down. Another great addition to the series
I voluntarily read and reviewed a special copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own

Pride drives the killer😩

Tragic for a limousine load of teenagers bound for the prom, with a heavily pregnant Sheriff Alton and crew to the rescue. I consider Black Rock Falls the serial killer hub of Montana with all the mayhem they wreak in each book in this series of which I am an ardent fan. The plot is gripping, the killer a mystery until the exciting climax, and Alton's crew has the personnel and tactical gear to handle every contingency, even tremors and rock slides!

A feature of this story I really appreciated: the author's use of multiple POV includes frequent glimpses through the victims' perspectives.

Great entertainment for a reader who doesn't mind a good measure of darkness.

Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.

Review shared on 6/14/25 on Goodreads and with Barnes & Noble and BAM. To be shared with kobo and Google Play upon publication.

Such a good series! every book really draws me in quickly and this one was no different in that respect. It was, however, sooo creepy and I guess scary? Such incredible writing from Hood to give that experience. The plot was fantastic (as always) and done really well with multiple POVs. Highly recommend. Thanks to Debra for another fab buddy read.

Thanks to the author, NetGalley and Bookouture for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.

Thank you Net Gallery and the publisher for sending me an Advanced Readers Copy.

Firstly, I must preface that I have not read any of the other books that belong to this series. Therefore, I did not have the connection to the characters and any expectations before reading this book.

The premise of detectives trying to solve the killings mirroring those of previous serial killers, is not an original concept. It is however a concept, that I do find entertaining. A story does not have to have a unique premise to be an enjoyable read. As long as the characters are fleshed out and multifaceted. Unfortunately regarding this particular book, I feel that the execution of the story and characters fell flat for me.

The story starts with a limo of young men and women on the way to attend their prom. There evening plans are swiftly interrupted, as they are taken hostage. I liked that the story immediately began with high stakes action. I unfortunately feel like the intensity of the story dwindled after the initial action.

I enjoyed the chapter’s that focused on the young women who had been captured. My favorite character was…and I became invested in her fight for survival. I would have appreciated more background information on her and the other women.

I did not find the police procedural chapters engaging. I felt that those chapters veered off into tangents (events), that I personally did not find interesting. It seemed to detract from the story and take away from the high stakes of the main plot.

Certain repetitive actions by characters, (such as Jenna pulling strands of hair from her face), became frustrating. I understand that creating idiosyncrasies in a character , can make them more, relatable and familiar to the reader. I found that the character lacked depth and the action acted more as a filler, to compensate for their lack of personality.

Although this book was not to my personal taste, I can understand why it appeals to others and why the series is popular.

3/5 Star Rating

This is one of DK Hood's BEST!! Spine chilling, twists and turns keep you on your toes the whole time!! This serial killer is one of the worst we've encountered in Black Rock Falls!! I literally could not put this one down, read it in two days! Fans of Kane and Alton will relish this new adventure!!

Book 26 in this brilliant series.

I loved this one. The prologue started at break neck speed and the tension didn't let up until the end. Without giving the plot away I will just say I really enjoyed the trip down memory lane. This is a great series and I can't wait to read the next one.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review "Good Girls Don't Cry", book 26 in the Detectives Kane and Alton series by D. K, Hood. This is the 26th book in the series that I have read and reviewed. I know these characters inside out, and it's always a treat to visit with them again (but I wouldn't want to live there, no-siree, not in Serial Killer Central - not in Summer, not in Winter (and Spring and Fall have their share of menace, too). But I digress.
Jenna and Dave are in the last weeks of her pregnancy, and hoping for a quiet time before their new baby arrives. Fat chance! Do you even know where you live?
When a limousine of teens bound for their prom is hijacked, nobody actually realizes what has happened until none of the teens return the next day. And the hunt is on. It doesn't take long before the limo is found, in a lake, with bodies still trapped inside. The boys are dead (and so is the driver), but where are the girls?
And then the bodies start appearing, seeming copycats of previous Kane/Alton cases, but with one notable addition - "Not Mine". It appears that there's a new monster in town, and it is up to the team to hunt him down and rescue those left alive.
In true form, Jenna, Dave, Shane Wolfe, Emily Wolfe, Deputy Rowley, Chief Deputy Rio and part-time team member Rowley jump into action, not to mention peril, as they race to the finish line. And welcome the new addition.
Can be read as a standalone (there's enough historical detail to bring you up to the present) but the whole series is worth the read.

i was wondering how this was going to go at first. because this kind of plot and the people involved were going to have to go all in or go all in. because taking a set of young kids, finding some dead and some missing. well you have to go for it at that point on the eveil stakes. and D.K.Hood did just that. not overly so but either did it shy away from what we new was a horrific tale.
i was invested from the blurb if im honest with you. but the book took the blurb and ran with it to a brilliantly written book. i was so in to this. so in.
as we know from the blurb we have a group going on their prom. they are dressed and ready for fun. but this isnt fun and what should be their night of dreams turns into a night of horror. because the limousine they are all in doesnt arrive at the prom. on hand is Sherrif and Deputy team Jenna and David. this is where they come across a terrible scene that seems to be getting worse. five are found, the boys. but the girls are all still missing. and there seems to be no traces left behind.
but Jenna sees something in this case. shes recognising it from a previous case. could this be a copycat?
the clock is ticking. are they girls still just missing or have they too been murdered?
i love how this book takes us to both the case and lives of the characters. all the characters have their importance and we are helped to both feel for the victims but also for the others involved in the plot. like our detective team. i looooove how this has been brought to the book and i dont think ive seen it before. we have a couple working together and making a great team. and their is the balance there of the personal life of our pair.
it all goes to make you care so much more about who and what you are reading.
this book is gripping. its tense, its awful to imagine and the pace between investigations, emotional moments and darker moments are all on point.
Hood has blown it out the water with this one. im beyond impressed every time i pick up her books. time and time again she hits all the right points for me. every single time.

The premise of this book pulls you straight in but it is a tough book to jump into if you haven't read other books in the series, something I will personally soon rectify. However, while being a first time reader of both books in this series and books by DK Hood, I still enjoyed the book. I simply had a tough time understanding all the relationships between the tight knit cast. This book has a great pace and is gritty and can almost be a touch shocking to read. One early scene hit me hard with horror. The number of young people who went from excitedly going to their prom to victim is horrific and you have to feel shocked when reading it. So many young lives cut tragically short and in such a horrific manner. The author does not shy away from topics just because they are hard to read. The book is designed, in my opinion, to mirror a very realistic tragedy and you can't shy away from something because it is hard.
Jenna, Kane and their team has obviously been well established in previous books as a smart and hard working crew. In fact, Jenna doesn't stand down from being part of the crew despite her advanced pregnancy. She is perfect for the gritty story because she has grit of her own and she uses it to face whatever comes her way. Her explanation to David about why she had to go in the woods to help investigate was very telling. She wanted to be part of the case but it was not best for her health but she persevered at getting her way. I suspect her husband knew she was manipulating him but let her because she is the heart of the team.
I need to check out other books in the series to learn more about the cast.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read this ARC.

Really enjoyed this book, after 25 books you would think that the series would be starting to go stale. But no, this instalment was as fresh and exciting as if it was the first book. Kane and Alton and team have to deal with a serial killer who has kidnapped a limo full of high school teenagers on their way to prom. Jenna is heavily pregnant, will she have the baby in this instalment? This book was exciting with lots of twists and turns and kept me engaged and entertained from page one. DK Hood wrote a cracking story and is on top form. I highly recommend this book, it was a fabulous read.
