Previously I read this book as an ebook and when I got a chance to listen to it as an audiobook, I really enjoyed it a second time around.

I read Last Night Was Fun by Holly Michelle on vacation and it kept me laughing through multiple states! I’m so grateful to @avonbooks for a copy to and to HarperAudio for an ALC. This one came out June 10, so you can grab a copy now.

Emma is the only female data analyst for a professional baseball team, and she feels like she has to work twice as hard. She’s vying for a promotion with her work rival, Gabe, who, outside of having the benefit of being a guy, has another leg up because he used to play baseball. Emma can’t stand his condescending ways. One night, she gets a text from a number she doesn’t know saying “Last Night Was Fun,” and almost immediately hits it off with the anonymous man on the other end who has a great sense of humor about the fact that the woman he met the night before gave him a fake number. Two guesses who the guy is!

I found this book super delightful. It reminded me in all the best ways of a Lynn Painter mash up. Both main characters were funny and sweet and the reveal of who’d they’d been texting is one of my favorites ever from this type of trope. I couldn’t stop laughing. There are some deeper themes about grief and family expectations that are handled in a really, really lovely way, and I loved Emma’s relationship with her sister who is getting married. I think readers who enjoy strong sibling bonds will agree. I will say that I didn’t love the third act break up. I get why it happened, but I didn’t love the way characters jumped to conclusions, It was fixed pretty quickly which was nice and it doesn’t keep me from whole-heartedly recommending this book to anyone looking for a fun romcom.

Patti Murin does an amazing job with the narration. I just feel like she makes every book she reads even more fun. Her delivery made Emma’s character entirely relatable and I was rooting for her the whole time. I would absolutely recommend the audiobook.

This was a super fun debut sports romance that starts with a wrong number and has anonymous texting buddies and IRL work rivals falling for one another. There's great You've got mail vibes, a destination wedding, only one bed situation in Cancun and lots of laughs and emotional depth. Great on audio and highly recommended for fans of books like The art of catching feelings by Alicia Thompson or First base by Ally Wiegand. This was such a delightful baseball data analyst romance! It has an FMC in stem, rivals to lovers, and an accidental text that turns into feelings. I loved the witty dialogue and heartfelt storytelling in this, and flew through this book so fast!

This was cute! I loved the Moneyball baseball vibes and a girl trying to climb the ladder in not just
a male dominated sport, but also the behind the scenes. Gabe was pretty dang dreamy and just kept showing up for Emmy despite her misunderstandings causing real problems for them a couple times. I'd argue he was a little more in love with her, than she was with him. I mean the man quotes Pretty Woman in a stunning take down of her ex. I think I had heart eyes. It really kept me listening and even though there was a dreaded if brief third act break-up, I enjoyed the resolution. Patti Murin provided a perfect voice for Emmy. All around a terrific rom-com!

“Last Night Was Fun” by Holly Michelle is excellent. Emmy, a data analyst, was a strong protagonist. This book is for lovers of sports romances and women in STEM romances but prefer more substance and character development over spice. Emmy and Gabe have a ton of chemistry and I loved their banter. I smiled through most of this book. Gabe is the perfect Golden Retriever/cinnamon role MMC. There are a ton of romance tropes in this story which made it extra fun without feeling overdone. The book was well written and I had a good time reading it. This is exactly what I’m looking for when selecting a romance book. Patti Murin, who narrated a lot of Ali Hazelwoods older books, was an excellent narrator and did a wonderful job bringing Emmy to life. I love how Murin conveys humor. She does a great male voice and at times I forgot it wasn’t duet narration.

This book is CRIMINALLY underrated. I am really surprised at the lack of special editions and advertising - it is exactly what romcom readers adore. I wasn't even 15% into the book before I ran to the author's Instagram in order to preorder a signed copy of the book if that tells you anything. I also read this book within maybe 6 hours, I couldn't put it down.

You've Got Mail meets The Hating Game with a dash of Ali Hazelwood is an absolutely perfect way to describe this title and I LOVED every minute of it. I could not stop giggling and smiling from basically page one.

Emmy and Gabe work together and are the definition of workplace rivals. The chemistry and the banter between them is just out of this world. Even when they're just texting you could cut the tension with a knife and your cheeks are going to be killing you from smiling for so long with how top tier the banter is.

The book itself is rather predictable, but honestly its Romance and that's okay. It didn't diminish my enjoyment of the book in the slightest. It's the perfect comfort read. I felt calm knowing that the things I was predicting were coming true and it helped me just go along for the ride.

There was an instance at the end that I am not personally super fond of, but it's resolved quickly and in the most adorable way possible so I can let it slide. The side characters aren't super developed but honestly, they aren't really the point of the book. They're there to move the plot along so we can see more Emmy x Gabe moments.

As for the audiobook:
- The narration was on point. I loved the pacing, the enunciation, the different character accents -- all of it
- The production was solid, no complaints there at all

Overall if you enjoy classic romcoms you will be utterly enthralled with Last Night Was Fun. I can't wait to go read other books by the author, if they're anything like this one I may have found a new auto-buy author for me.

Story immediately got my attention when it starts with Emmy Jameson receives a text from an unfamiliar number: “Last night was fun!” Her first guess it is the man upstairs as she had a negative encounter with him last night. The guy on the other end questions
– “Who is Tom?
She asks~ “This isn’t Tom from 304?”
He states “This is the guy from the bar night”
Since Emmy wasn’t at the bar last night she knows discover the guy on the other end was actually ghosted with a fake number by his date. But instead of ending the conversation, they continue to chat without giving their name. He’s funny, and seems sweet. She teases she is going to saves his number as “Axe Murderer,” and he calls her “Bird Girl.”

Emmy is also facing her little’s sister upcoming wedding- yes she has had to experience and dread of older sister NOT getting marriage first. She loves her younger sister Piper and she wants Emmy to be her MOH (Maid of Honor) and also bring a plus-one to the wedding.
Emmy really doesn’t want to ask anyone but the pressure is on.
However she and her mystery texter (she nicknamed - “Axe Murderer”) have continued to communicate. He is fun and a bright spot in her life. She gets the bright idea to ask him to be her Plus 1.

When they finally agree to meet him in person… it turn out they know each as they actually work together – well together may not be the correct word as he is her rival at work. His name is Gabe Olson and he is a charismatic ex–baseball player. They both work as sports statisticians for a well know baseball team. They are in competition for a promotion and Cassie knows he will get it. Since Baseball is a man’s world – right?

Emmy loves her sister and Gabe is willing to attend so - it’s a go!

There of course are bumps in their relationship and experiences at the wedding but it was a fun read!!

Last Night Was Fun by Holly Michelle is a rivals to romance set in a highly competitive office. Emmy's work life balance is zero. In fact, her previous relationship ended abruptly because of it. However, when an unknown number texts her after getting fake-numbered, she ends ends up finding someone who can match her wit and her dedication to work.

I really enjoyed this book. This was my first book by Holly Michelle, now I need to go read more of her works.

Definitely a book where rivals to lovers makes total sense. These two characters you could tell are meant to get together. It just seems so likely to happen. Out of all the numbers in the world, for the main male character to be given a fake number and it just so happens to belong to his office rival, the main female character. Of course! That is what good romance is based on. It was a fun story and I enjoyed listening to it.

This was my first Holly Michelle novel and it won’t be my last. This book kept my attention and was a really sweet, enjoyable love story with a HEA. I’m giving it 4 stars because the premise of how the love interests meet is a little too unbelievable. Patti Murin’s narration was 10/10 as it always is. Thank you for this ARC!

“You’ve Got Mail” meets “The Hating Game”? The marketing got it right. This is a fun, flirty work rivals-to-lovers romance with top-tier banter and real chemistry between “Bird Girl” and “Axe Murderer.”

Is the setup—Gabe getting a fake number that just happens to belong to his workplace nemesis—completely ridiculous? Absolutely. Did I care? Not even a little. It just works.

The dialogue sparkles, the pacing flies, and Patti Murin nails the narration. A thoroughly enjoyable listen from start to finish.

Last Night Was Fun is filled with enemies to lovers, forced proximity, vacation romance, workplace romance, and the meet cute kept me so invested. All of which are tropes I will eat over and over again and rarely be tired of.

This book gave me The Hating Games vibes. Which is great, because that is one of my absolute favorite books.

This was a fun, feel-good read with entertaining characters and great pacing. A lighthearted rivals-to-lovers rom-com with You’ve Got Mail vibes and a splash of sports romance! Emmy and Gabe’s chemistry shines through witty texting, workplace tension, and a slow-burn romance. Was it predictable at times? Yes, but it worked so well!! If you like competitive coworkers falling for each other, give this one a shot! Publication date is June 10, 2025.
