Cool concept, but too heavy on theory

Technomagica has an interesting setup, science meets magic in a new fantasy world, with a rational main character using his knowledge of biochemistry and maths to master a complex magic system. Sounds great on paper, but the execution didn't quite land for me.

The story often felt more like a science textbook than an RPG adventure. There’s loads of detail, but it slows things down and makes it hard to stay engaged. The characters felt a bit flat, and the dialogue was pretty stiff. I also couldn’t shake the feeling that parts of it read like a love letter to Soviet ideals, which pulled me out of the story.

If you’re really into deep system-building and don’t mind a slow, technical read, you might enjoy it. But if you’re looking for strong characters, action, and emotional depth, this one might not hit the spot.

It was a great audiobook, but it was long.
There were a lot of things that I didn't understand because I hadn't played games like this in a while, but nothing a call to my brother couldn't resolve.
I hope the author and narrator can work together again. They make a great team.

This was a complex story and the LitRPG elements were fun. I thought the magic system in this world was interesting and love a good reborn story. I liked the character dynamics and relationships, a favourite of mine of the characters was Delta.

I think that maybe I’m just not academic enough to really appreciate all the scientific and historical facts throughout the story, I did find these bits to mess with the pace of the story and I do think that it took a bit too long for the story to really get going.

Overall, I would say that people who enjoy fantasy and love learning historical and scientific facts will like this.

This was a sorta complex read for a LitRPG- At least for me lol. Although, I did enjoy it still!! I just had a bit of trouble understanding the leveling system, I felt it was a bit fuzzy as well as explanation of the Phantom World. *Maybe I just got lost 😬

Other than that, I felt like the premise was interesting!! A somewhat nonlinear timeline, thrown in w/ flashbacks, & so much historical / scientific themes. The world building wasn’t the best, but the unique magic system using his “knowledge of the scientific method, computational mathematics, biochemistry, and virology” was super intriguing.
I did feel like it circled around the overseer for quite a bit, but Delta’s way of banter & ability to give life to this book forsure kept things enjoyable.

Overall, this might not be for everyone, I did find a few dull moments, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Keith Brown did a good job narrating!!
