I will say, it took me three re-reads to truly grasp the theme of the book.

The illustrations were a beautiful soft color that almost resembled watercolors. This is always a great thing as it captures young readers' attention, and it is always a plus when the main character is a dog.

As for the story, it follows Buttons, who one day sees a butterfly and is captivated by its beauty. He wonders why nobody else is paying attention like he is. It then follows him across busy streets and parks, and along the way, he has other critters join him in following the butterfly.

At first, I was unable to understand the theme until the third reread, and it immediately became an instant favorite. The book's lesson is that sometimes we, as humans, are so busy that we do not take a moment to admire the beauty around us. This will be added to my list for lessons with my students during library time.

As an admitted dog person, it should come as no surprise that I was drawn to this book by the cover. Buttons, the dog, is first seen amidst the buzz of a busy street. Then Buttons finds a mission. He sees a beautiful blue butterfly and wants to share the beauty of that moment. Yet, the story, while featuring Buttons, is really more about the human tendency to always be in a hurry, rushing from one moment to the other, rarely truly seeing the world about us. Let's face it. We humans rarely do stillness well.

Buttons is determined to change that. Unfortunately, that isn't easy. As the book illustrates with simple yet meaningful illustrations, the world zooms past us. I liked the simple circular wheels and circular designs on the multitude of cafe style umbrellas shown. It added a real sense of movement and activity. The story takes place in a city, so there is definitely lots of that. I definitely appreciated Buttons' efforts to share, rather than hoard, the treasure he saw in that mere butterfly. A subtle nod to the importance of sharing. The illustrations definitely added to the story, capturing that hectic city life well.

Bottom line, a sweet, meaningful story for all its simplicity. It's a cliche, but the overall message of slowing down to smell those roses rings out here. Moments of stillness, for whatever the reason, are rare nowadays, so a nice reminder to us not to get too caught up in the hectic world about us. Stillness can open us up to so much.

As the World Goes By follows Buttons the dog as he embarks on a quest to make the world appreciate the beauty of a butterfly. The world is too busy to notice, but Buttons reminds others of the importance of slowing down and appreciating the small things in life. This was a really cute story with adorably sketched illustrations. This will be great for little ones who love animals.

As the World Goes By by Jonny Lambert is a sweet picture book perfect for preschoolers and beyond. For younger audiences, it can be a simple story about a dog and a butterfly, perfect for simple questions about the narrative and storyline. K-2 (and older) listeners and readers will be able to enjoy the heartwarming story and joyful artwork while also discussing the concepts of needing quiet, being present in the moment, and noticing the world around you. A nice addition to any home or elementary school classroom or library collection; perfect for early readers to master on their own.

Oh, this is a BEAUTIFUL children’s book. The illustrations are stunning and colourful, and the story is simple, yet important, with a message that tells us to stop and appreciate the little things. This is the type of book I would gift for a birthday party or even a baby shower, and my kids loved it!

In this beautifully illustrated and exciting animal adventure, readers are encouraged I slow down or stop altogether and take in the wonder of the little things in life. A band of animals chase a butterfly in wonder through page after page of preoccupied humans. This is a QUICK and engaging read aloud for bed time or Storytime, with an ultimately positive n important message to remember to look around.

I really loved this book - it was simply written and illustrated, which is perfect for an elementary audience, and the message was one that I think can be translated universally across grades and curriculum. This book focuses on the idea of people's tendency to rush around life and not stop to enjoy the little things that are beautiful everyday. This is something that both children and adults become a victim to, and I think that this book does a marvelous job sharing that theme while making it an engaging read.

I liked this book but I don't know if I liked it enough to buy a hard copy. It is a cute story from a dog's perspective which I liked. The dog notices a beautiful butterfly he thinks everyone should be interested in. But the people are all too busy to look and enjoy nature until he tells them to stop.

This is a really cute book. Both the pictures and the story are adorable!
