Xuemo, a renowned Chinese author who is renowned for writing wise sayings, has received international recognition across the United States, Europe, and Asia.
This story focuses on the entanglement of faith and love between a humble monk and a deity in the flesh. In the Himalayas, a Tibetan monk named Khyung, while seeking holy wisdom from Niguma in Nepal, encounters the divine fallen “goddess”: a young lady called Saraswati, the daughter of pandit Samadhi in Kathmandu. Khyung gets infatuated with Saraswati and vice versa. The monk ponders on his spiritual journey; whether to be austere or secular. The two then create a collection of love letters to each other, signifying their selfless affection and devotion.
A favorite aspect of this novel that I find really insightful is the vibrance and grandiosity of Nepalese culture. The reverence of healthy, virginal girls as embodiments of living goddesses is both inspiring and educational, creating a karmic connection with readers. The alignment of good health and virginity with wealth and honor highlights the purity of the woman's “temple”, brings prestige to her family, and elicits emulation from others.
I also admire Khyung’s bravery and persistence. According to Nepalese customs, anyone who has relations with a dethroned goddess shall live a miserable life. He actually ignores the beliefs, and, although they seem to be worlds apart, he focuses more on the loving nature that enshrouds Sarawsati’s humanity and encourages her to reveal the divine nature of love via the teachings of the “Diamond Sutra”, as she grew up with an inmate fear of being mundane. I also love how he speaks of how his dreams rely on a well-sculpted mindset, using his father as an example in a relatable story.
I do not have any negative views in the book. It contains morals that appraise the sacredness of feminine chastity. The author’s writings in the book are well-crafted, affectionate, and sensational, filled with literary storytelling, abstract language, and interesting tales. Khyung in this book reminds me of a more emotional, infatuated version of the austere Taoist monk in the book “Journey to the West.”
I did not find any typographical mistakes or grammatical errors because this book is excellently and thoroughly edited. I, Michael Lartey, the reviewer, find this book to be filled with power, emotional intensity, and elegance. Because of this, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.
I recommend this novel to young adult readers who love fiction, Eastern folklore, romance, Buddhist sayings, and to those yearning a connection in life. The book offers to us an interesting scope on a dharmic monk’s views on destiny, love, faith, and devotion.

非常感谢你
Thank you for the opportunity to read. I did not find this book to be for me but I am excited to see more English translations of Chinese works.
