I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was both serious and playful and kept me turning the pages. The main characters are Naomi and Daziel, who is a demon. Both characters are engaging, and at the beginning of the book Daziel is much more likeable than Naomi. He is her words made manifest and she wants nothing to do with him. Daziel does everything he can to ingratiate himself to her and eventually he does.
The supporting cast of friends and Naomi's aunt are well drawn and interesting. The friends have very different personalities and backgrounds but eventually come together to solve the scrolls and the problem they purport to fix.
There are some kinks in the world building. While demons are known in this world, they are almost totally to be separate from humans, so Daziel being in a major city and betrothed to a human is very unusual. Yet, there isn't that much made of it. Supposedly people are talking about their relationship and his presence on campus, but nothing comes of it. No university official shows up to see what is going on and Naomi's very powerful aunt isn't told. It's only near the end, when more information is revealed about Daziel, do the authorities get involved.
The book pivots to an earth-shattering crisis and it's up to the students and Daziel to solve the problem and save the country/world. As part of this, Naomi and Daziel perform a type of magic that is strictly forbidden, and although it is known how to accomplish, is somehow never used. This begs belief. The temptation of that much power would definitely be a lure for humans and demons alike so there should be more information on how/when/where those rules are bent.
The ending is solid and lays the groundwork for a sequel if not a whole series. I will buy this for my library and hope to see the next installment soon.
