Impulse control is at zero but we still thriving. This book takes you on a JOURNEY. There’s trials, political plots, romances, possible love triangles, friendship. It’s kind of jam packed and I was entertained.

Why this doesn’t get five stars from me is because I feel like there’s plot holes. I tried to convince myself I was missing things but it kept happening. I also felt like a lot was packed in but not unpacked enough. I’m hoping that is fixed in book two.

For example, a character who was maybe mentioned once was murdered and the FMC was asked to identify the body because she knew them?? Knew who? And the FMC at one point abandons her plan completely but there were multiple people helping her with said plan and also so many risks for abandoning it. I was like what are you doing, girl??

I’m very interested to see where the love triangles takes us though so I’m looking forward to book two!

Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC! I really enjoy her fantasy books and this one was a page turner. There were surprises that weren’t expected along the way as well as good character development. There are some aspects I have read in romantasy novels before but there are some new aspects to this one as well.

I appreciated the deep dive into the grief she felt over losing her best friend and the healing that took place along the way as the book progressed. Leon’s character was a constant safe place for Velle.

The contrast between the brothers was interesting and her pull to each of them in different ways was engaging. I loved the childhood flashbacks!

There are so many unanswered questions and several directions the story could go which makes me excited for the next in the series!

Stacia does not miss. I have loved everything she has written, whether I read a physical book or listen via audio. It’s so good.

Okay, I’m obsessed with this book!
Finally, a Romantasy that feels truly unique!

I gave this 3 stars on goodreads because I don’t like to go lower than that on public reviews but it’s really more like 2 for me.

Set in a magical timeline inspired by Ancient Rome (but with vampires! And magic!), the world building here was pretty solid. However, the story gets an ok from me, and not a great, because I couldn’t get over how many times the female lead, Arvelle, had to resign herself to various activities. Yes, her brothers were basically hostage but then either get out there and act with intent or give up. I was more interested by the apparently evil brother to the main male character but even his actions were a bit goofy with no sign of clear motivations). Some spicy scenes around the 2/3 point.

It wouldn’t surprise me if this book does take off since it’s similar to the Hunger Games and other “girl fights evil” stories but this reads like its first in a series and while I do love a series, I’m more captivated by a first book that brings me in on its own. Honestly though, I’m a little over dragons so it was nice to read something a bit more different.

Every fantasy that Stacia Stark puts out I’m always going to put it down. The heroine is powerful, relatable, and fierce. The world building is always elite.

We Who Will Die by Stacia Stark follows Arvelle, previous winner of the Sands and devoted older sister, as she makes a deal to fight in the Sundering and kill the Emperor. Her goal is to save her brothers and her path is filled with perils both in and out of the fighting ring. The multiple conspiracies and secret players make this a fast paced page turner. Couple that with Arvelle’s need to ally with the man who broke her heart and the emperors sadistic son, and we have a truly delectable slow-burn romance mixed in as well.

How will I survive until book 2? By rereading this one!

A fun new edition to the romantasy genre that is going to be big once it releases next year.

Our main character, Arvelle, must make a deal with a Vampire to save her brother and part of that deal is competing to join the emperor's guards and complete a task that is almost impossible. Along the way she meets someone from her past who hurt her and someone who is now who they seem.

This was a very entertaining book that adds a twist to the Romantasy genre with its Roman inspiration, Vampires, Sigil marked, and other magical creatures. The world created feels new but also mimics problems we have in our world today. The characters are well written, creating emotional attachments to them. I genuinely cannot wait until the next book in the series comes out so I can see what else will happen to Arvelle, Rorrik, and Ti.

If you enjoyed Bloodguard by Cecy Robson or Trial of Bronze and Blood by M.K. Deoradhán then you'll absolutely love We Who Will Die for its Roman-inspired gladiator trials and setting. It's just a bonus that there are unique vampires, mythical creatures, and an intricate magic system of sigil-marked mortals with varying powers and strengths setting themselves apart from the powerless mundanes. This book has something for everyone.

Arvelle, our brave FMC, is probably one of the best female leads I've read the perspective of in a while. She's as tough as nails - and she has to be given the lot she's been handed in life; but there's also something so sweetly sentimental about the love she has for her little brothers and the tenderness expressed in her memories of a long-lost love interest. She's hurt and bitter when the story picks up and her emotional journey throughout is riddled with upsets and obstacles, uplifting highs, and depressive lows. Being in her head and experiencing her thoughts was a thrilling pleasure as she evolved along the way.

The two (potential?) love interests couldn't be more different from one another. Tiernon reminds me of a man whose in love with a girl from the past who isn't very much like the woman he meets in the present. His love is sweet and unassuming - and in a world of vampires and political intrigue he comes off to me as a little unexciting. He's a good guy who deserves Arvelle..
But how could I deny Rorrik of the right to her? This bad-guy potential(?) love interest is a delicious mix of threatening and maddeningly arousing. He's everything that every woman should stay away from but I find him to be so much more interesting than his opposition. He's got secrets that need to be uncovered and it's obvious that at least part of his cruelty is all for show - but at the end we're still left questioning how much? Is there really a good man under all that sordid reputation and smarmy smirks?
I'm so here for book two. I cannot wait for this fandom to explode.

Her access to the emperor would come via her imvolvement in a prestigious gladitorial competition - she's already won a competition in her youth, but the tragic death of her best friend has kept her grief-stricken and away from fighting.

Arvelle winds up in the training ring, and a mysterious guard captain keeps pushing at her to drop out and go home - she can't, but she can't exactly say why, can she? This book should appeal to those who loved Violet and Xaden's relationship in the Fourth Wing series. The fight scenes are engaging and creative - this romantasy is worth the read!

Fans of 'From Blood and Ash' or 'The Shadows Between Us' will find a new obsession here. I'll be anxiously waiting for book two - and for more time with Arvelle, a heroine whose strength isn't in her sword, but in her scars.

I have seen this story pitched to fans of Vampire Diaries - I however might be in the small population who didn't watch that show - and it didn't hurt me at all!

I was obsessed. 2nd chance love, mixed with what seemed to be a potential second love interest - color me intrigued. The plot moved the entire book. The world was amazing. The world building, and foundation laying to take us into book 2 raring to go - this just is magnificent.

The only downside to having read this stunner early, is that I have to wait SO long for book 2. Stacia - I've got a perfectly good kidney for you if you want to let a girl read it early

I recently had the incredible privilege of reading an advanced reader copy of We Who Will Die by Stacia Stark, and I find myself utterly captivated by this mesmerizing tale. Addicting, addicting, addicting. GAHHHHH this book is INCREDIBLE!!!! I read it in basically one sitting.

Vampire Diaries meets Hunger Games meets Gladiator.

I saw some of the twists coming from a mile away, and others were a complete shock. The world building, magic system, politics and incorporation of Greek Mythology WITH vampires is so so top tier.

The characters all have a lot of healing to do, and the found family elements paired with a murder mystery and sort of love triangle had me hooked.

I truly cannot wait for the next book!

I binge read this book in one sitting the way I binge watched all seasons of The Vampire Diaries in one maternity leave. Greedily.

The fast paced plot engages you from the first page and doesn't let go until the last sentence. The stakes are high and honestly they don't let up once. The love triangle - something I usually hate- is delicious and a slow burn seeing as the FMC isn't quite aware that she's in one yet. I do wish there was a bit more angst and bickering between two of the characters- it's my only change I would have made.

The magic system is really fresh. The side characters are a slow burn as well and I can't wait to see the chaos they are going to create as the story unfolds! There's still a lot of questions I have that I am going to trust the process and wait anxiously for book 2 for!

Honestly, this book has it all and I can't wait to buy the trophy for my shelf when it releases in January!

While love triangles aren't generally my favorite, this one is well executed :) I actually found myself rooting for both men along the way!
