I really like this author's work but this was probably my least favorite of his books that I have read so far. It seemed like it dragged a bit and should have ended about 2.5 hours before it did.

Absolutely gripping from start to finish. The narration by Elizabeth Knowelden is excellent—she brings real depth to the characters, especially DS Becca Vincent. The pacing is tight, and the tension builds steadily with twists I didn’t see coming.

John Marrs strikes a great balance between police procedural and psychological suspense. It’s dark in places, emotional in others, and always engaging. The epilogue adds a final punch that left me thinking about the story long after it ended.

A solid, well-performed thriller—I highly recommend the audiobook for fans of smart, fast-paced crime fiction.

John Marrs just knows how to write a fantastic psychological thriller! Always such easy reads and this was no exception. The narrator was so good as always.

Her Last Move by John Marrs
A killer’s got a to-do list and murder’s at the top!

The first time I read "Her Last Move," it was via Kindle Unlimited. Flash forward a few years (and a few hundred thrillers later), I hit play on the audiobook, courtesy of Brilliance Audio and NetGalley. I didn’t realize I was revisiting familiar ground until several chapters in. Bookworm problems!

This crime thriller is classic Marrs, with its concoction of morally complex characters, lightning-fast pacing, and a plot that twists and turns like it’s in a high-speed chase. We’re following the lives of three individuals whose stories are as tangled as those old phone cords we used to wrestle with in the kitchen while chatting away! DS Becca Vincent is a detective balancing ambition and motherhood. Joe Russell, a Super Recogniser, has unique abilities that both empower and burden him, and the killer who’s hell-bent on settling a vendetta. The concept of a Super Recogniser adds an intriguing twist to the narrative—it's a fascinating element that kept me on the edge of my seat!

Listening to the audiobook brought a fresh edge to the story. As the characters grapple with their struggles, the tension intensifies. Joe’s search for his long-lost sister hits hard in audio, and Becca’s inner turmoil feels more emotional.

This story is tense, twisty, and emotionally layered. Beware, the killings are pretty graphic, so brace yourself!

📚 Already read it? Still worth revisiting in audio.
🎧 First time diving in? Buckle up.

Thank you NetGalley and Brilliance Publishing for the ALC.

This book had me tense the entire time. Every chapter left me needing to know what would happen next, and I kept telling myself “just one more.” It’s gritty, a bit dark, and I felt that constant unease in the best way.

I loved the London setting and the super recognizer angle, and it made me think about how much our memories shape us. If you want a fast, twisty read that keeps you guessing, this one is worth picking up. I did the audiobook for this!

I enjoyed some of John Marrs earlier work but unfortunately I have learned that he is more of a miss rather than a miss for me. Basically, his books all feel the same with the same general sci fi thriller premise. Even if the plot is different, I feel like I've read it before and not in a good way. I decided to dnf this one and won't be requesting anymore by this author.

I requested this one because it might be an upcoming title I would like to review on my Youtube Channel. However, after reading the first several chapters I have determined that this book does not suit my tastes. So I decided to DNF this one.

Thank you NetGalley, Brilliance Publishing, and John Marrs for the gifted copy of the audiobook.

I’m rating this book 3.75/5.

The story was gripping from the beginning. I love a good serial killer storyline. The book was very inclusive, which was a breath of fresh air, especially considering it was released almost 10 years ago.

The narration was good, I give it a 4/5.

SPOILERS

I will not forgive John Marrs for killing Becca.
I am happy that Joe found his sister.

As a devoted John Marrs fan who has devoured every one of his brilliant novels, I can unequivocally say that "Her Last Move" lives up to, and perhaps even surpasses, expectations. This book is a relentless ride of suspense, packed with unexpected twists that are genuinely shocking. Marrs pulls no punches, crafting a narrative that is as thrilling as it is unputdownable.

If you're already a fan of John Marrs, do not hesitate for a second – this is essential reading. And for anyone who loves thrillers, suspense, and even true crime, "Her Last Move" will grab you from the first minute and refuse to let go. The audiobook production is pristine, exceptionally well-edited, and an absolute pleasure to listen to--Elizabeth Knowelden shines as a narrator. A resounding 5 stars!

Thank you Brilliance Publishing and Brilliance Audio for this ALC.

Decent police procedural from an author I don't usually think of when it comes to police procedurals.

This is a very fast paced novel, I finished the audiobook in less than a day.

DS Becca Vincent is a single mom to a young girl with Down syndrome. Her mom lives with her and helps out, but she always feels like she isn't doing enough at home or at work. When she is waiting to ride the tube one day, a man falls onto the tracks near where she is waiting. It soon becomes apparent that this case is linked to another and that it was murder. She gets assigned to the case and begins to work with Joe Russell, who is a Super Recogniser, a person who has a photographic memory for faces. As more murders occur, Becca and Joe work frantically to try to figure out the connections between the victims.

There are a lot of moving parts to this story, many characters doing different things. Yet when they all come together, the storyline is clever and interesting. There are lots of twists that definitely cement this as a John Marrs novel, he oftentimes will take things in a completely unexpected direction and this book is no exception.

I appreciated Becca's dilemma with her feelings about never feeling like she is doing enough with her job or enough with her family. It is a common thing I think many parents, especially women, feel every day. This gave the story a lot more depth.

This 2025 edition of this book has a bonus chapter at the end, which does give a good cap to the tale. I listened to the audiobook and the narrator Elizabeth Knowelden gave Becca an authentic voice.

This was definitely different than the other books I've read by this author. It's a police procedural, which I love this genre. But the more I read the more I saw his normal twists and veers that make it his signature style.

I'll admit it took me a minute to connect with the main character, Becca, but I finally did and I was rooting for her both personally and professionally.

The chapters from the killers pov were quite disturbing and they were quite the sick person.

And the more I read and the more information that came out about everyone, the more this fit with his other novels in spirit and types of characters. There was a moment that shocked me but I don't want to spoil anything, but you'll know when you get there.

This updated version includes a new epilogue that sheds a little more light on the previous ending that some might have thought a little open ended. It's a nice addition to story.

I was able to both listen and read and enjoyed Elizabeth Knowelden's narration. She does a great job voicing all three narrators and making the killer as disturbing as they needed to be.

This book has John's signature twists and turns, keeping the reader on their toes and making it hard to put down. It's another homerun of a thriller for me, and I highly recommend this for lovers of mystery psychological thrillers. I discovered him last year when one of his books was chosen for an online buddy read, and he's become a fast favorite author.

When this was re-released with a new cover design and a bonus chapter, I was thrilled to be chosen by Brilliance Publishing/Brilliance Audio to listen to it through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Don't sleep on John Marrs' books, they are worth reading.

A fast-paced, twisty thriller that had me second-guessing everything. 💥 When a ruthless killer starts staging elaborate murders across London, DS Becca Vincent and facial recognition expert Joe Russell are brought together to stop him—before he strikes again.

This isn’t just a police procedural—it’s a mind game. Marrs brilliantly weaves emotional backstories with chilling suspense, keeping you hooked until the final, jaw-dropping reveal. Just when you think you’ve figured it out… you haven’t. 😱

Her Last Move is a dark thriller which will drag you into its clutches. The 2 main characters, DS Becca Vincent and Police Super Recogniser Joe Russell are hunting down a killer who has a list of targets that is drawing closer by the day, and at the same time trying to figure out how they are connected and why he is doing this. John Marrs books are always full of surprises and characters that really pull at your heartstrings and this one is no different. Having a character who is able to identify almost anyone he's seen added an interesting element to the story, and there is also a character with Down Syndrome, who I felt was well represented. This new edition has added a bonus epilogue which adds to the characters and gives them some closure.

Elizabeth Knowelden did a fantastic job narrating the audiobook, I don't think I stopped listening until I got to the end!

This was okay, I did expect it but wouldn't necessarily recommend.

It's about a serial killer who has a list of people he wants to kill. Every victim has their own struggles but what exactly binds them together? You'll find out in this book!

It honestly wasn't that satisfying to me.

3.5 stars - John Marr's 2018 novel Her Last Move is getting a face lift and a bonus chapter rereleasing July 8th!!!

Usually I love all of John Marrs books but this one did not wow me and I think it was because I had a hard time following along with the audiobook as there was a lot of people and timelines. I predicted some of the twists, which is surprising since I could not remember who was who and what everyone's names were. I think if I physically read this book instead of listening, I would have give it a higher rating so don't let my rating stop ya from reading a John Marrs book because he is an amazing thriller and suspense author!!

** Thanks NetGalley & Brilliance Publishing for a free audiobook in exchange for my honest review!

This was a dark and suspenseful police procedural that I really enjoyed. I liked the way it was told in three different POV’s and I found the characters to be very unique.

I’m really not sure what I was expecting but this wasn’t it. I enjoyed the mystery of this book however I was expecting more of a thriller and I didn’t get that. The writing kind of felt everywhere to me and had to go back and reread to see who’s pov it currently was. It was good though and kept me interested throughout the entire book.

A fun thriller. John Marrs comes up with an imaginative story where a serial killer rushes to get through his killings before he’s found. I enjoy his books and this one was great. The narrator did a great job bringing the story to life. Thanks to John marrs, the publisher and NetGalley for an audio arc in exchange for my honest review.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4/5)

“The law doesn’t always take into account morals….”

Check Trigger Warnings…because John Marrs books are wild. 😉

Thanks to Brilliance Publishing for my #gifted copy of this #audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

This guys is a serial killer who enjoys torturing his victims. He has a list of 6 people that he wants to kill with the best and most important left for last.

I couldn’t wait to hear what this guy’s deal was. Like WHY does he wanna kill
all of these people and in such heinous ways

How Dominic Hammond discussed torturing snails when he was younger etc.

This book really shows the growth in John Marrs writing since When You Disappeared. His thoughts are put to page in a more cohesive way. It was a solid read.

BRILLIANCE GRANTED MY WISH YALL, WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THE WORLD!!!! 🙌🫶

I really liked this one (except one part which had me BAWLING).

I'd recommend if you love:
-serial k!ller
-police procedural
-lots of thrilling moments throughout

I read through this super quick as it is fast-paced with lots of tension and thrill! I loved the main characters and the friendship they formed over the case of their investigation. This one had a (mostly) satisfying conclusion with twists right up to the end!

The audio production is great, the narrator kept me engaged with the story the whole time. The pacing is good and the emotions and tension come through in the reading as well. Would definitely recommend grabbing this one on audio if you're an audiobook lover.
