This is the book that tells the reader to stop and pay attention to whatever is right in front of you!
This story is a slow burn that speaks to long time connections and lingers with you. Took me a few to really think about this review.
We all want to believe there is someone out there. Someone that is made just for us. This book goes there.
SLOW SLOW BURN.
No insta love.
Daisy and Logan bring thoughts of fate to my mind. Meeting one another time and again. They never really say how they feel to each other (I did find this a bit frustrating at times).
So much a right person but the wrong time circumstance in this book.
The characters are very well developed.
The plot is well structured, but the pace is very slow. If you love a good slow burn, this is a book you will thoroughly enjoy.
I didn't expect the unhappy ending. I haven't read many that don't end on a happy note.
Lots of emotions, very raw.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book!
Happy Reading!

I loved this book. Such a beautiful story line. Daisy and Logan’s story is inspiring. I could not put this book down.

Important lesson here is to let your feelings and thoughts be known. Don't wait until it's too late! I couldn't put the book down last night. . . . was too eager to know how this story would end. The two main characters just couldn't get timing and the stars to align even though they were both in love with each other. I know what I hoped for, but this was heartbreaking and completely not how I imagined it would end. If you enjoy an emotional read and a book that will stay with you, then you'll really enjoy this!

My goodness. This book gave me so many emotions. I was happy, sad, aggravated, frustrated, but also joyous and happy. So worth every page. Thank you for the opportunity to read this arc.

A beautifully written, emotionally rich story that stayed with me long after I finished it. The Last One explores the power of timing, missed chances, and the quiet connections that shape our lives. Daisy and Logan’s journey is full of depth, longing, and heartbreak — set against stunning backdrops and told with warmth and honesty. I found myself moved by the subtle twists and the emotional truth at its core. Poignant and unforgettable.

The Last One by H. Pearce is an emotional gut punch in the best way possible. A love story shaped by time, grief, and the weight of everything left unsaid. It’s tender, aching, and raw—with moments that quietly break your heart.
Told in multiple timelines, this is a slow burn second chance romance that explores how love can linger—haunting and beautiful—even in the shadow of devastating loss. Pearce captures the complexity of mental health, guilt, and healing with unflinching honesty. Every page feels heavy with longing, and by the final chapter, you’re left gutted in the quietest, most powerful way.
Note: This is not a happily-ever-after story. It’s real, it’s raw, and it doesn’t wrap everything in a neat bow—but that’s part of what makes it unforgettable.

The blurb of this novella really hooked me in but unfortunately it was difficult for me to get into this book, it could purely be because of the wrong timing that I read this at. Unfortunately I DNF’d at 50 pages due to not getting into it

I think I felt every emotion whilst reading this book. Themes of love, grief, trauma, mental health.
Wonderfully written. This is the first book I have read by H. Pearce but will be hunting down more!
Daisy and Logan, 2 characters who keep meeting each other through a period of time. Who you feel for but also get frustrated at them because of the circumstances and them not telling each other their true feelings.
This book is all about having a connection with someone but it always being the wrong time. You're rooting for the main characters to be with one another but it sadly never happens for them.
I wanted this to have a happy ending so bad, but then I also think that was too predictable. so in a way I'm glad it didn't end that way but also sad about the way it did!
Thank you to H.Pearce, Victoria Editing and Netgalley for the ARC.

An emotional roller coaster in the best way.
This novella took me on such a ride—Daisy and Logan’s story is full of yearning, heartbreak, trauma, and those fleeting but beautiful moments of hope and connection. Their relationship pulled me in completely, even as they kept missing each other like ships passing in the night. It’s raw, emotional, and deeply affecting.
The ending? Total tearjerker. Have tissues nearby, and don’t be surprised if you find yourself curled up hugging a pillow like I did.
I flew through this in one sitting—it’s impossible to put down once you start. This was my first read by this author, and it definitely won’t be my last.

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC.
I wasn’t sure what to expect from The Last One but it completely broke me.
What’s starts as innocent strangers having a connection, turns into a bond never on the right timeline.
The words, the way the author connected the POV’s to include both was beautiful. You see the raw emotion each is feeling throughout their crossroads. Years worth of “not being friends”, you see Daisy and Logan bond over the simple conversations and instant connection.
Daisy and Logan - may you both have peace with your love.
This was my first book that didn’t have a happy ending. The finch will forever have a place in my heart 🐦⬛

"The Last One" by H. Pearce is a deeply moving and thoughtfully crafted contemporary romance that truly resonated with me, earning a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
This isn't just a love story; it's a poignant exploration of life's complexities, and I found myself completely drawn into its emotional currents.
What truly stands out in this novel is its profound emotional depth. H. Pearce masterfully delves into the characters' inner worlds, making their joys, struggles, and heartbreaks feel incredibly real and raw. You genuinely feel for Daisy and Logan as they navigate their individual paths and their intertwined destinies.
The central themes of fate and timing are woven throughout the narrative with such grace and impact. The story beautifully illustrates how moments of connection, ambition, and unforeseen events can shape a relationship across years, sometimes bringing people together and sometimes pulling them apart. The journey over the years that Daisy and Logan undertake is compelling, showcasing the evolution of their lives and feelings in a very authentic way. It's a testament to the idea that love isn't always easy or perfectly timed.
Beyond the rich emotional landscape, the book is simply beautifully written. H. Pearce's prose is evocative and flows seamlessly, drawing you into every scene and every feeling. This elegant writing style elevates the story, making even the quiet moments feel significant.
For readers considering this book, here are some key elements and potential content warnings:
Tropes You'll Find:
* Missed Opportunities / Right Person, Wrong Time: The core of their enduring connection.
* Fated Love / Destiny: A strong underlying theme guiding their paths.
* Second Chance Romance: They reconnect and face their past after periods apart.
* Slow Burn: The relationship develops over a significant span of time.
* Dual Timeline: The story often shifts between past and present to tell their full journey.
Potential Trigger Warnings (Please be aware):
* Grief / Loss of a loved one: The story deals with significant loss and its aftermath.
* Mental Health Themes: As Logan is a neuroscientist, mental health struggles (either his own or those he's helping) are a thematic element.
* Past Trauma: Characters experience past events that have deeply shaped them.
* Accidental death/injury: A pivotal tragic event occurs that impacts their lives.
While the emotional intensity might be a lot for some readers, and the nature of missed opportunities can be bittersweet, "The Last One" offers a powerful and unforgettable experience. If you appreciate contemporary romance that explores the deeper complexities of love, destiny, and the beautiful, messy journey of life, "The Last One" is a must-read.

This is the story of two people, who upon meeting find instant connection and then spend a lifetime unable to really connect for more than brief moments. The impact of those brief meetings on the fabric of their lives though is enormous. I kept hoping for them, but more like real life, hope isn't always enough. I enjoyed this story and the alternating narration from the two perspectives.

I feel like I didn’t really know what I was getting myself into when i requested this arc. It’s this kind of book everyone should read because it leaves you raw and empty at the same time.
It’s not the kind of love story that you usually see. It’s slow and so full of yearning.
You know these moments you have with people where you think what if? What if I have said that or what if I would just act.
But you don’t do it so it will be just a missed chance.
Logan and Daisy taught me so much. I respected them both deeply for how real and human they felt.
I also wanna add that the writing was so beautiful. You felt the meaning behind each word. And even though this book was only 200 pages, it didn’t feel short at all.
I will definitely be checking out more books by H. Pearce.
Thank u so much NetGalley for sending me this arc!!

The story broke my heart. I never imagined the ending would be that way. I absolutely loved it, but it broke my heart. The situations were so real and so authentic that you wonder if everything that was told actually happened in real life. I will definitely read it again.

Good lord, this book is an emotional roller coaster ride. This novella follows Daisy and Logan and we get to experience their yearning, trauma, sadness, hopelessness and intermittent moments of happiness together. I really loved their relationship even though they always seem to be ships passing in the night. The end of this book is a definite tear jerker so bring your tissues. Also ignore me over here in the corner crying and hugging my pillow.
Be prepared to finish this book in one sitting because you will not be able to put it down. This is my first read from this author and I can say that it definitely won't be my last.

Wow. The Last One completely wrecked me - in the quietest, most delicate way possible. It’s short, but don’t let that fool you. This story carries weight.
Daisy and Logan feel so real. The kind of “what if” love that lives between the lines. The timing is always off, the words never quite said, and you’re just watching it all unfold with that sinking feeling in your chest because you know how it ends… and yet you hope anyway.
It’s tender, it’s raw, and it doesn’t shy away from the messy stuff - grief, longing, duty, motherhood, mental health. H. Pearce somehow captured all of that in just over 200 pages, and I devoured it in one sitting with tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat.
This isn’t a happily-ever-after kind of love story… it’s the kind that lingers. The kind that makes you stare at the ceiling after finishing and just feel for a bit.
If you’ve ever had someone who felt like home but never really got to be yours… this one will break you. And you’ll thank it for doing so.

This book destroyed me. I felt so sick. So freaking sick I threw up twice. My heart hurt so bad. I think I've never felt so heartbroken as I was now after finishing this book. I wanted to scream and cry so hard but it was 2 AM now. My chest hurt from the sadness this book brought me. If it was possible, I wanted to dive into the book and made Logan and Daisy never met. This story was so unfair for both of them and everyone in this book. My throat was so tight now because the pressure I had to try not to cry again.
How could this book made me so mad, sad, and miserable all at once? I hate this book so much I need to give it 5 stars because I am a masochist.
Thank you to H. Pearce, Victoria Editing, and NetGalley for the ARC.

a book so compelling and so full of feeling. i was totally taken in by this pairs story and i wanted to know all of it and wanted to keep reading all of it until i knew how it would turn out. i was holding out hope and also not wanting to in case it didnt have a hopeful ending. thats how i know i enjoyed this book, how utterly involved and needing a right ending i was!
we come to this book and our female main character Daisy. shes a journalist and through work she meets Logan who is dedicated himself and his work to his scientist backround and mens mental health. they start with an interview but there is no way this isnt something so much more between the pair.
the writing just flowed from then. you got so much depth for the length of the book.
i loved how relatable i found the pair and often smiled with the familiarity of their thoughts.
over time their interactions became something more. and i began to wonder where this was going. was i hopeful, or something else?
and there is things that occur that made my feeling towards Daisy even more prominent. she was such an amazing woman to follow. the things she had to take on, the decisions she had to make made her a very brilliant young lady indeed. knowing what she had to do i almost didn't want to continue to read. her duty was so powerful but so painful at the same time. and yet it was also kind of wonderful to see something like that.
oh i dont know i am all a tither after this one. in all the best ways when you have read a book that makes you feel like this one did.
you know how much a books effects you when you want a forever epilogue to make sure or find the characters are ok!

Thank you to Netgalley and the publishing co-op for access to this ARC. My views are my own.
So I cried when I watched the movie and series, ' One Day'. I hadn't read the book but this Novella seems like it fits into a similar themes. Two people who seem destined to be together but have numerous missed connections over the years but are becer together long enough to form a real bond.
Daisy meets Logan when she's interviewing him for a magazine. He's about a decade older, she's 26. They have a dparl between them and keep meeting but then their lives go I. Separate directions. They do connect mostly by email but sometimes its a year or more in between. They don't actually spend more time together then a lunch date. Both get married and both have issues in their marriage. For Logan its that he's in live with Daisy and cant connect with his wife, leading in a divorce.
For Daisy her husband and father of her child is severely injured in Afghanistan while in duty suffering from a devastating head injury that takes his memories and leads her to switch from wife to nurse/ caregiver.
They still find a way to accidentally meet again even if it's only an intertwining of souls.
I was fascinated by the concept of the story and was kept on my toes the whole time.. I felt like the talk about reincarnation was interesting and I mostly understood the ending ( although not sure I 100 wasnt reading more into it then what it was).
I didn't feel a real connection between the main characters though for 60 percent of the book. Their time together and conversations were too short and I didn't see them as more then emotionally supportive friends for the majority of the book.

Thank you so much for allowing me to read and review this ARC via net galley.

[NetGalley Review – Spoilers Below]
The Last One by H. Pearce is a quiet, beautifully written exploration of love, timing, and the soul-deep recognition that sometimes, the one has been beside you all along—even if you never really got to call them yours.
This is not your typical love story. There’s no sweeping romance or grand declarations immediately—instead, it's a slow, aching realisation of connection built over time, across glances, shared messages to one another, and missed chances. The writing is intimate and understated, and it perfectly captures that sense of yearning we all carry: the hope that someone out there is meant for us.
📌 [End Spoilers]
This story lingers with you. It asks what it means to love someone completely, without allowimg yourself the chance at a relationship with them and even if you never get the fairytale ending. Which sadly for these beautiful characters, they don't. For readers who enjoy emotional depth, bittersweet truths, and stories that quietly stay with you, The Last One is a standout. One of the most affecting reads I’ve picked up this year.
I cannot wait to read more from this author
