I succeeded in reading this at the third time of trying. I truly loved it as something totally new to me. I must catch up with other offerings from the author.
Christmas this year has been difficult for me with the coronavirus restrictions and I haven’t really enjoyed it. This novel showed me how to look at the past and feel strengthened by it. I’m sure we all have sorrows that haunt us and somehow this writing, with dual narrative and coming of age theme helped exorcise some for me.
As this is based on the well documented lives of the Spalding family, it amazes me how brave these pioneers were. The author recognises that Eliza’s memoirs left a gap of 3 years and she has sought to fill it and imho has done so with sensitivity to the feelings of current descendants.
Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this and my review is in no way coloured by this fact.

Jane Kirkpatrick's novels about the Pacific Northwest are always interesting. And this one is no exception. Based on the story of Eliza Spalding Warren who was a witness at the Whitman Mission massacre and kidnapped by Indians. Although the back and forth chapters from her mother's diary and then to Eliza's life in the 1880's was a little confusing, but I don't have suggestions on how it could have been handled better.

If you love history you will love this book. Kirkpatrick did a wonderful job of bringing this story to life. This is the story of Eliza, a child survivor of the massacre at the Whitman Mission. Eliza's mother dies leaving her a diary. The story compares the lives of Eliza's with her mother's. This is a true story and one You should definitely read. It is an amazing book!

Although not exactly what I originally expected, Jane Kirkpatrick’s novel The Memory Weaver, was a historical fiction delight. This novel is about a young woman who has had a hard life and tries her best to make it better. The novel fluently transitions between the story of Eliza Spalding Warren and the diary of her mother, bring new depth and enlightenment to the story. Readers will enjoy this well-written and brilliantly crafted characters that also enrich the development of the storyline. I would recommend this novel to readers that have a deep love of historical fiction and would enjoy a story that takes place in the Washington and Oregon territories during in the mid 1800’s.
