📖 Review: Blood on Her Tongue by Johanna van Veen
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 (4.5 stars)

I think I’ve found a new auto-buy author. This was so beautifully written. It had the perfect blend of gothic horror, vampires, relationships, sisterhood, and mental health. I absolutely loved this story and had so much fun reading it with @hawaiianlilypad!

🩸👅

The Netherlands, 1887. Lucy’s twin sister Sarah is unwell. She refuses to eat, mumbles nonsensically, and is increasingly obsessed with a centuries-old corpse recently discovered on her husband’s grand estate. The doctor has diagnosed her with temporary insanity caused by a fever of the brain. To protect her twin from a terrible fate in a lunatic asylum, Lucy must unravel the mystery surrounding her sister’s condition, but it’s clear her twin is hiding something. Then again, Lucy is harboring secrets of her own, too.

This felt like classic gothic literature, especially in the way the author created the eerie atmosphere throughout the book. The narrator did a great job capturing Lucy’s fear and confusion, as her sister changes before her eyes. I really enjoyed the focus on the sister relationship, and their complex emotions towards each other. The book also dives into gender roles and the expectations of how women were expected to behave at that time. I recommend this audiobook, if you are looking for an atmospheric gothic horror with complex sibling dynamics!

About the book 👇🏽

The Netherlands, 1887. Lucy's twin sister Sarah is unwell. She refuses to eat, mumbles nonsensically, and is increasingly obsessed with a centuries-old corpse recently discovered on her husband's grand estate. The doctor has diagnosed her with temporary insanity caused by a fever of the brain. To protect her twin from a terrible fate in a lunatic asylum, Lucy must unravel the mystery surrounding her sister's condition, but it's clear her twin is hiding something. Then again, Lucy is harboring secrets of her own, too.

Then, the worst happens. Sarah's behavior takes a turn for the strange. She becomes angry . . . and hungry.

Lucy soon comes to suspect that something is trying to possess her beloved sister. Or is it madness? As Sarah changes before her very eyes, Lucy must reckon with the dark, monstrous truth, or risk losing her forever.

🩸 My thoughts:

I'm in your blood, and you are in mine . . ."

A girl needs to eat… and she sure did! I listened to this audiobook is one sitting. I completely devoured this book (pun intended) because what the hell… how could I not?! The narrator did a wonderful job of sucking me into this story. It’s utterly dreadful and immersive and the right kind of gothic horror I enjoy. It was lyrical and honestly a different take on vampires but one that I really couldn’t get enough of! If you enjoy dark, gothic, & atmospheric reads… you definitely need to give this one a listen/read!

Happy reading 📖🩸🎧
