I can't remember the last time I read a historical romance so this could've been a real miss for me. However, Sheri's writing is so captivating and well done that I was gripped very early on in Bryanna and Black Bear's story. You can tell how historically accurate and well researched this book was and I especially liked the pace of how their relationship developed.
My only complaint is that this ended really abruptly, I would've loved to see Bryanna actually reunited with her mother and what life is like adjusting (even if she's just visiting) back to more english/american ways of living and customs and how Black Bear would handle it. A flash forward a couple of years would've piqued my interest as well. Overall though, I'll read future books by this author as I really enjoyed this from page one!

A beautiful and heart touching story!!! I couldn't put it down once I started reading it and stayed up all night. I definitely recommend this book!!!!

Historical Romance Meets Frontier Vengeance with a Deep Emotional Core
Sheri Peppers’ War Woman: A Daughter’s Promise is a bold, romantic, and emotionally resonant historical adventure that takes readers deep into the heart of colonial-era America. Bryanna, left for dead after a brutal attack, vows to avenge her father—and is drawn into a world she never expected when she’s rescued by a Cherokee chief named Black Bear.
This is a story of opposites—civilization vs. wilderness, love vs. grief, justice vs. vengeance—and at the center is a heroine grappling with all of it.
Highlights:
• Cultural Depth: The depictions of Cherokee life feel carefully rendered, respectful, and rich with detail.
• Emotional Weight: The trauma of loss, the slow journey to healing, and the shifting views of “enemy” and “ally” are explored with nuance.
• Strong Romance: The chemistry between Bryanna and Black Bear builds gradually and believably, with plenty of internal and external conflict.
Minor Critiques:
• The narrative sometimes leans heavily into introspection, which slows the momentum in spots.
• The emotional pivot in Bryanna’s mindset—while compelling—might have benefited from a few more pages to fully breathe.
Thank you to the author and publisher for the ARC via NetGalley. A compelling read that blends historical grit with a tender, character-driven romance.

For anyone who wants a sweet story of love & sex, adventure, coming of age, balanced out with betrayal, intrigue and suspense, this is it!
Bryanna Kingsbury is a 20-year-old English woman whose family has moved across the pond to South Carolina in the early 1700's. She departs from their large South Carolina home on a trading expedition with her father. Well into the expedition, their group - led by an expert but foul-tempered Indian tracker, are attacked with Bryanna and one man as the only survivors. Saved by Cherokee Chief Black Bear, they are taken back to the Indian camp where she lives among the Cherokees, learning their ways with two goals: to seek revenge for her father, then return home to her mother.
While recovering from her physical wounds and psychological trauma in Black Bear's home, cared for by his mother, Bryanna and Black Bear discover a bond of respect and attraction forming between them.
Sheri Peppers expertly weaves together suspense, love, respect, friendship, betrayal and newfound love - along with some steamy scenes - as the couple explores and deepens their relationship. This is one story I could not put down and when I had to, could not wait to get back to!

This a fascinating story taking place in the early 1700’s. A love story between a white woman and a Cherokee Chief. Very engaging story.

“War Woman: A Daughter’s Promise” by Sheri Peppers is a 255-page fiction book released this year. It is the author’s first independently published book. The paperback has ISBN 979‑8314627761 and costs $4.99.
Sheri Peppers loves to write historical romance novels and lives in California.
This story takes place in 18th-century South Carolina and centers on Bryanna Kingsbury, a 20-year-old English woman from Charleston, who, against the advice of her guide Jeremiah, journeys with her father and his men on a trading mission that ends in a massacre. She is saved by Black Bear, a Cherokee chief who falls in love with her. Bryanna vows to avenge her father and guide, and to find Jeremiah’s surviving family. She must hone her skills in the wild for the impending times ahead, learning from the ways of the Cherokee people.
Will she have her revenge? What becomes of her relationship with Black Bear? Will the Cherokees ever accept her? It is up to you, readers, to find out!
My favorite character in this novel is the Cherokee Chief, Black Bear. He is both a lamb and a lion. He is a generous and honorable man who serves as a role model to his people. He secretly tracked the whereabouts of Jeremiah’s missing daughter and nurses Bryanna back to health. Black Bear is also very discerning and wary of Niles’s true intentions, while trying to drum sense into Biting Sense’s jealous mind. His life makes him the perfect hero, like those portrayed in the stories told by his kindly mother, and the lamb Bryanna deeply loves. He is also lion-hearted and protective of his people and family. He is immensely ruthless towards his enemies, showing brutal mercilessness towards Wild Arrow and the invading Creeks.
Bryanna’s character development throughout the story is, in fact, one of the best aspects of this book. From a slightly naïve and arrogant young woman, she transforms into a determined, vengeful warrior. Her revenge against the Iroquois, coupled with the immediate care she shows for Beatrice and her child, indicates the deep connection Brianna has with all those she considers family. Brianna still loves to test people’s patience, as commented on by Jeremiah and Black Bear, but she proves herself by saving Black Bear’s life in the Creek invasion, earning his admiration.
I do not have any negative views about the book. It is a tale of love, war, and vengeance, with interesting, well-crafted storytelling and suspense-filled chapters that constantly pique readers’ interest, leading to a very satisfactory and interesting ending.
I did not find any typographical mistakes or grammatical errors because this book is excellently and thoroughly edited. I, Michael Lartey, the reviewer, find this book to be filled with credibility, emotional suspense, and power. Because of this, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.
Due to its content of mild profane words and sexual content, I recommend it especially for adult readers interested in fiction, romance, and Native American history.
