I picked up Changing Fortunes because I love a good blend of mystery, suspense, and a supernatural twist—and the idea of one narrator being alive and the other dead? Completely hooked me.
The setup is strong: Kate’s husband disappears with their son, a woman turns up dead, and suddenly she’s dragged into something far more dangerous than her world of finance ever prepared her for. Meanwhile, Tess—who is that dead woman—is caught between worlds, determined to reveal the truth and right some wrongs before moving on.
I really appreciated the dual perspectives in theory, but in execution, it often made the storyline feel choppy. The narrative would gain momentum with one character, only to backtrack or reframe the same scene with the other, which got repetitive after a while. I found myself more engaged with Kate's chapters, where the stakes felt more immediate, whereas Tess’s ghostly musings sometimes slowed things down.
Still, the plot kept me curious, and the emotional payoff toward the end—especially around redemption and grief—was well done. If the pacing had been tighter and the dual narration more complementary than overlapping, this could’ve been a 4-star read for me.
As it stands: solid idea, mixed execution. Worth a read if you're into paranormal thrillers and don't mind a bit of narrative repetition along the way.

A charming Southern mystery with rich atmosphere and a clever heroine.
Callie Morgan’s dive into antiques uncovers secrets, danger, and unexpected romance.
The Savannah setting is vivid, the plot engaging, and the twists satisfying.
A cozy, well-paced start to a promising series.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine

Overall this book was ok. It kept my attention but took some work. It’s an interesting storyline with pretty good characters but it’s just too jumpy. It jumps back and forth in time and also from character to character.
The whole storyline with Tess is strange.
There also isn’t a real ending. The whole book there is all this talk of the collectors but we don’t find out who they are or anything about them.
Thank you NetGalley for the copy

I could not get into this one - the repetitive nature of the dual-narration format meant that so much of the paired chapters was literally repeating the scene from the other point of view. It made for an oddly choppy storytelling experience, that I found distracting and that kept me from fully engaging with the forward momentum. I also found this one darker than I expected - that's not a problem, just a comment. There is a fairly graphic scene in the opening pages, and it caught me by surprise since I was expecting a cozier read, akin to Mixon's Savannah series, which I'm also reading on here.

About the time when he kidnaps their son, Kate discovers that the man was a chimera living a double life--or more. From then on there are more dead bodies, blindsiding plot twists, and a dead woman who is a kind of FMC. Very unusual and riveting.

FMC Kate Lander’s everyday life suddenly turns upside down without a word or clue—Her husband is missing and he has their son!! Unlock the chest of secrets and lies!
This is an easy detective domestic mystery read for the beach and is set up to have future books with some of the main characters so standalone reads with familiar faces.
It did get a little repetitive but kept you interested. I also liked that it had that cozy mystery feeling throughout with a little paranormal activity mixed in. It had some thrills and chills and would be perfect for that summer beach, pool or vacation read.

I did not enjoy “Changing Fortunes” as much as I enjoy other Veronica Mixon books. The back and forth between the living and the dead was not my taste. I did not enjoy Tess.
Others who are into ghosts and murders may enjoy this one. I found some of the situations too cliche and expected.

Thank you NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for the eARC.
This was a good story overall, but I did find it a bit repetitive. The 2 protagonists, (one dead, one alive) were likeable and I really felt for Kate whose husband walked out and took their son. Naturally she's frantic to find him.
There's a paranormal perspective to the story, which I enjoyed and it is a pleasant read overall. Hopefully the next in the series will ramp up the excitement.
