There was much to enjoy here, but I found I couldn't connect with it. I'd read more from this author in the future though.

Thomas's novel is set against the background of one of the most fascinating eras of French and Spanish history, and the marriages depicted in the book sent shock waves across the world. Approaching the subject from the perspective of the novelist offers the reader a deeper emotional understanding of the people at the heart of these transactions, and it colors the world of the time with a more vivid palette. Recommended.
