Jenna Moreci’s guide is a fast, funny, and practical resource for anyone writing romantasy! She breaks down worldbuilding, character chemistry, and how to balance magic with romance all in a clear, easily understandable way.
Each chapter wraps with a handy summary, making it easy to revisit key points. While seasoned writers may recognize some advice, Moreci’s genre specific is nice.
Whether you’re outlining your first romantasy or leveling up your tenth, this book is a smart, entertaining companion.

Thank you NetGalley for the advanced reader copy!
Oh my gosh, the way I was SO excited to get the mail about being approved for this book!!! I love how the chapters are split up and the easy explanations throughout the book, it feels all encompassing for someone who wants to start a writing journey. It’s very easy to follow and is literally PACKED with information. The timing of this is great as I have been considering getting back into writing for a very long time! It inspired me immediately and I know when I get ready to start that journey, I will be referring back to this book a lot. Eagerly awaiting the release date so I can get a physical copy (as I like to hand write, bookmark and make notes in books like this).
This is one I’m even going to recommend to my readers group as I know I’m not the only one aspiring to write the next big thing.

The book takes you from concept to conclusion, walking through every essential element of crafting a romantasy novel. From building immersive fantasy worlds to developing shippable couples with sizzling chemistry, Moreci doesn’t just tell you what to do, she explains how and why it works. The tips on merging the fantasy and romantic arcs were especially useful, offering guidance on how to balance the tension and stakes across both genres.
Each chapter ends with a concise summary, which makes it easy to reference later without rereading the entire section. While some experienced writers might find familiar advice sprinkled throughout, the fresh framing and genre-specific insights make this a standout resource.
Whether you’re writing your first romantasy or refining your tenth, How to Write Romantasy will leave you feeling more confident, more inspired, and more ready to craft a story readers will fall head-over-heels for.

As someone who is writing a book in the Romantasy genre I found this book extremely helpful and informative. It gives in depth information on the various aspects of writing a Romantasy novel verses a fantasy or romance novel. It also talked about the different types of Romantasy novels which I also found helpful. I would defiantly recommend this book to anyone looking to write a book in this genre.

This a fantastic guide to write your own romantasy or to have your students write. I found it thorough, easy to follow and totally enjoyable

A fantastic book to help layout and give hints and tips to the aspiring writer! Love the humor thrown in, it makes it a light and engaging read!

Unfortunately, I am not a writer. However, I am a big reader and I wanted to see what tips this books gave to future romantasy authors. Immediately, from the very first page, I knew this was going to be a good one. The author uses blunt humor in order to draw readers in. The sections of her chapters are clear and informative. I especially like that I could skip around to the parts that interested me.

**Thanks to NetGalley for the eARC!**
I was SO DAMN HAPPY when I got approved for this book. I already had it on pre-order, so this made my day. Once again, Jenna did not disappoint! As someone who is dabbling in this genre, I felt like the author broke things down to easy-to-understand explanations. I took plenty of notes that'll help me with my own writing. This book will help many other writers!!

How to Write Romantasy is witty, informative, and packed with valuable insight for anyone interested in writing in the romantasy space.
The tone is casual and fun without sacrificing depth. There’s plenty of practical advice, but it’s delivered with charm and self-awareness, perfect for writers who want guidance and a good laugh along the way. I especially appreciated the balance of humor, genre specific tips, and honest reflection.
If you’re a fan of romantasy and thinking of writing your own story in the genre, this is a guide worth picking up.

I knew Jenna Moreci by reputation only, and I haven’t read her novels yet—though I’ve been keeping an eye on them since their release—so this is the first of her works I’ve had the chance to read. I’d like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for the complimentary copy provided in exchange for an honest review.
"How to Write Romantasy" is both a writing manual and an accessible essay, truly useful and engaging. It explains, in a clear and effective way, the differences between genres that not everyone has fully grasped yet: romantasy, fantasy romance, and romance fantasy. While they might seem the same at first glance, they actually differ quite a lot in how the romantic and fantasy elements are balanced and intertwined.
For readers who are well-versed in the genre and who read extensively, the difference is already clear, so the first forty pages might feel a bit redundant, especially since much of this content has already been discussed on social media, particularly BookTok.
However, for those who want a clear and well-defined understanding—especially from the perspective of what they want to write and how to strategically market their title—knowing the terminology and using it correctly can be extremely beneficial.
This first section was the weakest part for me personally, as I was already familiar with the concepts and had studied them in depth. I skimmed through it fairly quickly to get to the core of the book: the guidance on writing and structuring both the romantic and the fantasy sides of the story.
When the essay shifts into being a manual, Jenna Moreci’s work becomes truly compelling. Although it’s a fairly quick read, it offers plenty of insights and starting points—not only for diving into writing, but (more importantly) for digging deeper into certain aspects that the author touches on without fully exploring in detail.
As a first-time guide, and thanks to the examples provided, I found this to be a very useful and smooth read. It adds value to the knowledge aspiring authors or debut writers may already have.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more and get a solid foundation to pursue their dream: crafting magical love stories.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC. I would definitely buy and read this otherwise. I love insider views and what authors think. How they view the world and what they expect. I enjoyed this book immensely. Thanks

Romantasy is a rising hit among several age groups, and this helpful guide on the ins/outs provides insight into writing in that genre. It starts simple and progresses through just about everything you would need. I especially enjoyed the tips and tricks on the mild, spicy, and flaming hot sides of physical intimacy.

Despite having never read romantasy and not planning on writing any, I really enjoyed this book. Jenna's tone throughout the book is fun and friendly, with a little bit of filthy innuendo here and there. I liked her explanations of the elements of romance I was not familiar with and how the genre integrates fantasy and romance. This book is a helpful step-by-step guide to developing a good romantasy.

For what this is- 5 stars.
It really is a How to Write Romantasy book
I've never truly read a how to book from front to back- but this one was so easy to.
It does not read like any other how to book I've attempted, it really felt more like a lecture or conversation with the writing style/language.
It was so informative and organized- really easy to follow along and skip sections that did not apply to me with the clear formatting.
Jenna did a fantastic job being honest and encouraging while relatable- I immediately ran to search her other books.

✨📚 4.5 STARS — ROMANTASY WRITERS, RUN DON'T WALK 📚✨
Okay, listen. If you're writing romantasy - or even thinking about writing romantasy - you need to get your hands on How to Write Romantasy by Jenna Moreci. I’m not even kidding. This book is the cool older cousin of your dusty old writing guides. It's sharp, hilarious, and wildly practical in all the ways that count.
I picked it up partly out of curiosity and partly for work (I teach writing and also dabble in scribbling my own dragon-kissed love stories). Let me tell you… I ended up folding corners, highlighting passages, and muttering “OMG YES” every five pages. Jenna lays it all out - tropes, pacing, spice levels, plot structures, character chemistry - without any of the fluff, but with so much sass.
Her voice? SO engaging. Like your bestie at a writing retreat, wine glass in one hand, laptop in the other, telling you exactly how to nail that enemies-to-lovers arc or why your brooding prince needs a better backstory. It’s accessible and empowering, even for newbies, and as someone who actually teaches this stuff, I loved how easy it was to adapt some of her advice into lessons and exercises for my students. It just clicks.
Why 4.5 instead of 5? Honestly, I just wish there was more. More examples, more sub-genre breakdowns, more juicy writing prompts. But that’s probably just me being greedy 😅
TL;DR: If you’re a romantasy writer, teacher, or total plot bunny hoarder, add this to your craft shelf immediately. Jenna understood the assignment, slayed the dragon, and gave us the beautifully detailed map.

4.5 stars!!
This book felt like a great way to be introduced to the process of writing a Romantasy novel. The way it is written is very entertaining and allowed me to stay invested into it without getting bored. There was a level of personality in it that definitely allowed me to stay interested.
Furthermore, while I don't think this book covers everything, it does do a good job at diving into the more popular tropes and ideas that one might find in a popular Romantasy today. The biggest strength this book had to me was the explanation of the 5 things you need to create to provide emotion intimacy for the characters. The author is also very good at including little examples of what each situation could look like through the whole book.
Lastly, I want to touch on the inclusivity that was included in this book. I think for the most part the author tried really hard to be aware and cognizant of relationship that might be outside of the "normal" perspective and for that I applaud her. However, I think if you're looking to write a book with a why choose or a reverse harem, you might want to look for specific detail for that somewhere else.
In the end, this book felt like a really easy, fun, and entertaining way to get introduced to something's that make a great Romantasy but you might need more guidance on how specifically plot and write a book beyond the fairly basic plot devices shared in this book.
Thanks to NetGalley, Jenna Moreci, and Clarkson Potter/Ten Speed Press for the eARC of this book and I would still highly recommend checking it out when it gets released on October 21, 2025!
Instagram review will be posted closer to release date!!

This book was a lot better than expected. I don't typically read 'how to' books, and expected to read about things I already know since I am writing a romantasy for fun.
It surprised me how in depth things are explained here, and how much truly useful information is written.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to write a romantasy or similar books, to read this one if they want inspirations, guidence or answers to some of the questions they have lingering in their minds. I feel like this book truly explains every aspect of writing.

This felt very much what I can find on the internet, as opposed to giving me something fresh and new to consider

I absolutely adore both the writing style itself but also the way that the writer has laid everything out systematically. Just as she says in her writing, you can use each section piece-meal as the intended writer needs or you can read the entire thing. As someone who enjoys reading more than writing, I even enjoy how the formatting is still easy to read through rather than bogged down by too much technicality and makes it very easy to go in and get the main points. She even has a chapter summary bullet point style highlights of the chapter if you as the writer want to easily skim through and see if that’s a chapter that you’ll be interested in fully properly reading through to see the examples she talks about or if you’d like to explore a different chapter. Phenomenal job and thank you for the interesting read!

A fantastic insight into building a romantasy novel. I always enjoy Jenna's voice as it perseveres even when she's not actually reading it.
