The Last Letters of Sally and Walter is a beautifully crafted novel that reminds us it’s never too late for reinvention—or for love. McGovern’s characters are memorable, authentic, and deeply human. This is a love story for the later years: funny, poignant, and endlessly uplifting. If you're in the mood for friendship, warmth, and the thrill of starting over, this one’s a gem.

What a wonderful, surprising book. The story of Sally and Walter as they move forward in old age was deeply moving. This is not a sad book but one that shows that even as we age there is opportunity to both deal with the indignities and be open to growth. With age comes wisdom and Cammie McGovern¡s writing captures this adage beautifully.

I absolutely loved this book! Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read an advance copy. I found it a touching and lovely book about people in their 70s in an independent living home and the game of competitive Scrabble. As a former Scrabble devotee, it reminded me how much I used to love playing. It may have revived my interest in it. I loved the vulnerability of the characters at a challenging time in their lives, both with their own changes as well as difficulties with their adult children. I also appreciated the insights about this living community, relationships, parenting and many other issues. Despite some heavy issues, there was plenty of humor. The author did a wonderful job bringing the characters to life. I look forward to reading her next book. Very highly recommended!

I wasn't sure about this at the beginning - there is a lot of technical Scrabble talk that overwhelmed me with detail. However, the latter portion of the book grabbed me and made the overall experience enjoyable. Sally and Walter are realistic for the most part; I did find Walter's transformation from crabby curmudgeon to emotive romantic a little quick but it didn't detract from his character's charm. I didn't immediately grasp why Sally was living in the senior apartment complex when she still owned a home, but that was explained once Andrew's backstory came to light.

One phrase that took away from the novelty was at Loc 535 when reference was made to "holding a breath all her adult life" or some close iteration of the "A breath I didn't know I was holding" trope that shows up so frequently in recent releases -- what is with that!

I also wondered about the accuracy of Sally saying she went to the dollar store, Loc 3402, when her children were young -- doing some quick math, it seems that would've been in the late 70s or 80s; were dollar stores prevalent 4-5 decades ago? It struck me as out of sync.

This book was charming, witty, realistic, and an absolute wonderful read! It is the story of Sally and Walter; two residents of the Golden Grove Independent Senior Living Center. They find a common bond and form a deep friendship over Scrabble.

I expected a story about two geriatric adults filled with sadness and frustration over changing and moving into a new stage of life. Instead, The Last Letters of Sally and Walter was uplifting and took and realistic look at examining their lives in retrospect while accepting the natural circumstances of getting older.

Both Sally and Walter are incredibly believable characters. They both have a life of experience, triumphs, and failures they remember throughout the story. These flashbacks reflect so much thought and maturity I grew to love both of them. It gave me a new insight to aging and being human. The other main component to this book was Scrabble. It is clear the author understands the game and is adept at describing the excitement of playing the game. The author's vocabulary throughout the book is beautiful.

The overall pacing of the book was incredible. It is told from alternative first person perspectives of Walter and Sally. This format gave so much insight into the motivations and actions of each character. They never did anything to produced drama for the sake of drama.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone looking for something humorous, light, and honest.

I really enjoyed reading this book, it had that concept that I was looking for and enjoyed the overall feel of this. I was invested in Sally and Walter and getting to know them in this plot and had that realism that I was wanting and enjoyed. Cammie McGovern has a strong writing style and thought the overall concept and execution worked overall together.
