4.25 stars

This had so many things I enjoy (forced proximity, found family, morally grey). I loved Talon and Scythe together as things progressed, did an excellent job of "hating" being fated mates :P I also loved the LGBTQIA & non binary rep in this story. Add in some meddling gods for funsies?! ALSO THE CATS. I loved them. Admittedly the spice was a bit spicier than my usual preferences but overall, it was written so well that didn't even take me out of the story. Curious where the next one will go!

Of Silver and Curses by Maddox Grey
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4 out of 5 stars)

This book surprised me in the best way.

Of Silver and Curses throws you right into a dark, magical world where witches and cursed werewolves are forced to work together, even though they’d much rather rip each other apart. And honestly? I was here for the tension, the grudges, and the pain-filled history between the two leads. Nothing about their relationship is neat or romanticized—it’s messy, bitter, and full of sharp edges. Loved that.

One thing I really appreciated: the main character is non-binary, and it’s just part of who they are. No big dramatic explanation, no clunky handling—it just is, and it’s done really well. That alone already gave this book points from me.

The worldbuilding was strong, the atmosphere hit that perfect mix of haunting and magical, and there were a few twists that actually caught me off guard (rare, honestly). I was invested, I cared about what was happening, and the emotional stakes felt real.

That said… I did feel like some things lacked depth. There were moments, especially with the characters’ past and their emotional baggage, that could’ve gone a bit deeper. Some scenes felt like they ended too soon or didn’t dig all the way into what was really there. And I wanted more. Not in a “bad writing” way—but more like, “you almost got me crying, go a little further next time.”

Final take?
A solid romantasy with bite, tension, and a world I’d gladly return to. If you like enemies (maybe lovers?), curses, fierce vibes, and broken characters trying to survive side-by-side, this one’s definitely worth picking up.

At first it seemed interesting but as I kept reading the plot wasn't keeping my interest. The plot seems to be rushed, and the conflict seemed to be rushed as well. I unfortunately had to dnf at chapter 5. I liked the back story of Scythe, but I got confused with the backstory of Talon. The inner monologue of the main characters was a bit cringey at times. I also found myself struggling to continue reading.

I was immediately sucked into this new fantasy world Maddox created and I simply did not want to leave! I loved these characters so damn much and highly recommend this as your next standalone fantasy read!

We are first introduced to our main characters, Talon and Scythe, in the prequel novella, Of Melodies and Maledictions. I highly recommend that you read this short novella first to have a better understanding of this world of witches, mages, and cursed werewolves. Plus, you’ll get a good introduction to the found family created, as well as why our beloved characters behave the way they do.

Talon and Scythe have the best sizzling chemistry. They are simply drawn to each other time and time again, and despite their best efforts to stay away, fate makes that an impossible feat. This story not only showcases the journey these two take to save their sisters, but find themselves and each other in the process. Self sacrifice was the name of the game, and they each proved time and time again the lengths they would go to keep those they lay claim to safe.

While this is a standalone, Maddox is creating such a rich new world and I cannot wait to see what comes next in this interconnected series and which couple will be featured.

First I want to start out by saying I am new to the Romantasy/Fantasy genre but I really enjoyed reading Scythe and Talon’s journey to save their sisters, build trust and their bond all while kicking ass and having amazing 🌶️ banter!

The author did an amazing job grabbing you from the beginning of the story where you are introduced to both Scythe, The Witch of the Woods, and Talon, a cursed werewolf. The story begins with a one night stand between the two that abruptly ends with the two despising each other. Who doesn’t love a good enemy to lovers trope?!

Scythe and Talon’s sisters are in love and end up getting kidnapped. Talon and Scythe have to go on a journey together killing anyone who stands in their way. During their travels the two are forced to share a single horse and a bed! You can probably guess what happens….and I can assure you, you won’t be disappointed.

Scythe and Talon are a force to be reckoned with and make a great pair. As much as I would love to provide more info about their pairing I don’t want to spoil your fun reading the story that Maddox has meticulously crafted and brought to life. Enjoy!

Thanks to Victoria Editing Co-Op for the chance to read thjs ARC! I look forward to reading more from Maddox Grey!

Favorite Quotes:

“The witch is perfection, and she’s mine.”

My thoughts:

Are you tired of the damsel in distress FMC who is always making stupid decisions? Then this book is for you. Scythe is a cunning, smart, and beautiful hunter with the instincts to go with it. The other MC is Talon who is nonbinary. They are a charming, whitty, sexy thief who will probably steal your heart if you’re anything like me. Of Silver and Curses mixes romance and spice with characters who take a big stance about social injustices. Overall, Of Silver and Curses is a political, sexy, steamy, queer, and thought provoking book! Definitely recommend!!

Cerelia aka Scythe, the last Witch of the Woods, has come to accept that she is better off alone after her sister Astria has run off with Ravyn, her human lover and sister to the bane of her existence—cursed werewolf, Talon. All she need is the forest and the creatures who inhabit it. Only Scythe cannot stop thinking about Talon, and their heated tryst a year and a half prior.

When Talon reappears with news that both of their sisters have disappeared, the pair must put aside their differences to save them before it's too late. Scythe and Talon can barely tolerate one another, but both soon learn there's a thin line between love and hate.

I absolutely fell in love with Talon and Cerelia in Melodies and Maledictions, and could not wait to dive into Of Silver and Curses to see how their story ended! The chemistry between these two was off the charts, and their banter was *chefs kiss*.

𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗧𝗢 𝗘𝗫𝗣𝗘𝗖𝗧:

Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me early access to this eARC.

4.25. This was an excellent paranormal fantasy romance. This book is about Scythe who is the last witch of the woods and Talon who is a cursed werewolf. Both of their sisters mysteriously disappeared from a travelling troupe. Talon sets off to find Scythe and they both go on an adventure to find their sisters.

First, this book takes place following a prequel novella that details how Scythe and Talon meet. This is not necessary to read prior as the main points are touched upon in this book. However, I do recommend you read because it was excellent and give great background as to their enemy status.

I thoroughly enjoyed both the adventure and the romance in this book. I enjoyed the unique aspect to Scythe’s magic and I have not read about a cursed werewolf before. It made for a very interesting read. From the very beginning, I was intrigued. I felt like the pacing was great and never became bored with the story.

I loved the romance in this book. Talon is the first nonbinary main character I have read and the author did an excellent job featuring them. This book is extremely spicy and it would be helpful to look up trigger warnings.

Overall, I would highly recommend this book. I loved it. And cannot wait to read more in this series and more by this author.

Please note: I received a free ARC (Advance Reader Copy) of Of Silver and Curses in exchange for an honest review.
Of Silver and Curses is the first book I've ever read with a non-binary MC, and I was really curious to see how they would be portrayed. I wasn't disappointed; Talon was wonderful. I loved how Maddox wrote them, and Talon was a delight. I loved how the world dealt with gender in a beautifully varied way that felt so natural and just accepting of everyone's individuality.
The world-building itself was wonderful, feeling original and different. I liked the history that was built up, and the differences between kingdoms and people. It felt like a real world, and the way it was described was beautifully written. Excessive descriptions which feel forced are a particular issue for me, and it never felt close to that. It just gradually filled in the background and world in an intriguing and beautiful way. The relationship between Scythe and Talon was particularly captivating. Their connection felt incredibly real and palpable, building with a steamy intensity that was both exciting and utterly enthralling. The undeniable draw between them was a joy to read, truly anchoring the emotional core of the narrative.
The story itself was relatable and real, unfolding with great twists and turns that genuinely surprised me at every corner. Combined with a cast of interesting side characters who each felt distinct and purposeful, the plot kept me utterly gripped. I literally couldn't put it down and genuinely needed to know how it ended. The conclusion was simply perfect, wrapping everything up in a way that felt incredibly satisfying and true to the journey I'd just experienced.

Thank you so much to the author/publisher for sending me and e-arc of this book. Unfortunately, this just wasn’t for me and that’s okay! This gave more of an erotica/cozy fantasy. It didn’t feel high stakes, there was more spice than plot, so with that being said this is for a certain reader I just prefer a little more world building with my romantasy, and less insta-lust. But I can see how other readers might enjoy it, bc it is a simple to understand fantasy world but it just wasn’t my thing.

I loved this book so much and it was easily one of my favorite books I've read this year. I loved the main characters Talon and Scythe and I haven't been able to stop thinking about them since I finished the book. Their banter made me cackle and their desire made my toes curl. I loved how ruthless they were with their enemies and how fiercely they protected those they love. I loved the representation of a nonbinary main character, which is almost never seen in fantasy romance. I loved the spicy scenes for obvious reasons (maybe I also have a crown kink?). My only criticism is that this is a standalone book because I want an entire series of these two. Thank you to Maddox Grey and Victory Editing for the ARC!

A bad a$s witch, a cursed werewolf, and a one night stand gone wrong. This is the perfect set up for a high tension, banter filled, standalone fantasy romance.

Scythe is a witch, and the last one at that, tasked at guarding The Witches Woods and the path to The Wilds. Her people have left her and her mate abandoned her. The only one to stay is her younger sister and now she’s gone missing!

Talon is a werewolf, cursed to not be able to shift by the witches, who travels with a performance act. Their parents were killed at a young age and they have been left to care for their younger sister who has also gone missing with Scythe’s sister.

Despite the animosity between witches and wolves, Talon teams up with Scythe to find their sisters. The catch, they have already met before, a few years prior, when they had a hot and steamy night that did not have a pleasant end.

The tension between Scythe and Talon throughout the book is absolutley perfect. These two have an instant pull to one another other and I loved watching them slowly trust each other and break through the barriers

I really enjoyed the premise of the overall storyline and hope to see some of these characters again in their own standalone!

If you’re looking for a standalone fantasy romance then look no further!!

Thank you NetGalley for the early reader copy!!!

I liked the non-binary representation in this book. That’s something I personally haven’t seen a lot in fantasy books, and would love to see more. Both main characters were interesting and I enjoyed the banter between them. They also had great chemistry.

The magic system seemed really interesting and I would love to learn more about it.

The thing I struggled a bit with was pacing. At times I felt like nothing was happening, and sometimes (especially towards the end) there was almost too much going on and things felt rushed.

Thank you to Maddox Grey and Victory Editing for allowing me to get a chance to read this book, I am honoured.

I read this book about a week ago. My immediate rating was 5 stars, and that stays true after a week of it being on my mind non-stop.
I picked it up and never put it down till I was done.
Talon and Scythe are amazing main characters and this story was so beautiful and fun, it was one of my first experiences reading a non-binary character and as someone who personally struggled with their sexuality identity I really resonated with them.
I loved the magic world that Maddox created, with fae, witches, wolves and more living in a magic-outlawed medieval society. It is an amazing book and with such a witty, action packed, smutty, romantic fantasy plot.

The only downside was that the world building was very fast, so be prepared to pay attention.

I've read Of Silver and Curses by Maddox Grey, gifted by Netgalley and Greymalkin Press as an arc in exchange for an honest review.

The story is about Scythe, the last Witch of the Woods. Her sister Astria is in love with Ravyn, the sister of Talon, a cursed wolf. Astria leaves her sister behind but after a while Talon finds out that Astria and Ravyn are gone. They are going to search them and they will get the help of Scythe to find their sisters.

It's a wonderful fantastic story where all characters are morally grey and they don't mind killing other people, filthy language and the spice is very detailed.

For me it deserves a 5 star rating and I can't wait to get a physical copy of this book.

Of Silver and Curses by Maddox Grey was a joy to read. It's about witches and werewolves, (non- binary werewolves!) It was a perfect mix of character and story development. I loved how the magic was connected to music and animals! It is written in dual POV. Both main characters are morally grey and the banter and spice between them is great!

I really enjoyed this book! I was definitely cheering for Tal and Scythe.

Scythe feels that she has been abandoned by everyone - her people, her mate, and now her sister, the only family she has left. She is determined that the only thing she needs is her forest even if she can’t keep her mind off the cursed werewolf, Tal, who also happens to be the sibling of the woman who stole her sister’s heart. When Tal arrives back in her forest with the news that both their sisters have vanished, Scythe has to leave her comfort zone and work with Tal to find and rescue both women. The only question is whether they will be able to trust each other and ignore their attraction.

I loved the banter in this book. Tal and Scythe were so quick-witted and smart. I liked how they had to rely on each other at various points throughout their journey and how they could recognize that they each had their own strengths. I’m so curious for the stories of some of the side characters especially Ryllae and Caspian. I cannot wait to read more about them!
