I didn’t realize this was a novel published in the 1960s until I read the introduction by author Melissa Broder. This was a very interesting book about a young college student descent into mental illness. I thought the writing style was poignant and enlightening. I felt deeply for the protagonist and wanted the very best for her near the end of the novel.

The Ha-Ha is absolutely a unique and incredible piece of fiction. I'm having a bit of hard time rating it, though, BECAUSE it is so different. It's absolutely a standout and I devoured it in record time.

I don’t think it much matters what I think of this novel, since it’s some 50 years old and has a confirmed reputation.
Personally, I found it dated. Rather nicely written, but yet another story of a woman within a mental institution - a topic that has become rather too familiar. It’s an affecting tale but its abstractions left me rather cool.
