This one was not for me. I might be a bit of a poetry snob and typically don't care for poetry that feels so incredibly general. I prefer poetry that is really specific and in some way or other, quite original. This did not feel like it fit the bill. Instead, it felt like it could have been written by or about anyone. I'm not sure about the audience for this one either. There were moments that seemed to be about adult relationships, and then there were moments where the poems seemed to be offering advice to someone in some of the earlier stages of self-discovery and independence. For that reason, perhaps this is intended for a teen audience though it is not tagged that way.

Some things I did like: There are spaces left for the read to write or respond. That interactive format is really fun and interesting.

The headings prior to the poems we often interesting and poetic and likely would have made better poem titles than that actual poem titles. there were individual lines with excellent sounds and vivid imagery so I feel like there is some promise here, but it just needed to go deeper and further.

I loved the cover too. Gorgeous!

I did not so much like the rhyming which felt like too much, or the incredibly simple rhythms and forms. However, I can forgive this for the sake of the fact that these are labeled as "songs" more so than poems. Though in this case I really wish I had some music to go along with it.

And most importantly, and I already touched on this a little, I wanted these poems to have a little more substance and theme than I found them having. While I don't mind poems that are by and large, straight forward as poems are not riddles, but that does not mean it should be generic or bland.

I would not really recommend this book in general. But perhaps, a teen or preteen who is curious about poetry but relatively new to it may find enjoyment in this to have some simple poems to spark some thoughts and responses in themselves and there is even space in there for them to write and create their own poems and responses.
