Not great. I wasn't aware that this was a sequel, and unfortunately the authors do not do a great job of creating a book that one could read without picking up the first book. The way the book starts suggests to me that the previous book ended with a cliffhanger (a gimmick that I hate) and then just drops us into it with zero introduction. The info dump of previous plots and characters isn't done in a way that explains anything of value to a new reader and will likely just annoy a new reader. And then ZAP! we've time-jumped five years into the future with again zero explanation of how or why. All this would be fine is the writing was at all compelling, but it's not. The characters are annoying and the writing is flat. I felt like I was being told about the story rather than being told a story.

I enjoyed Monster Trainer by Paige Andrews & Percival Constantine.

Sci Fi is not my normal reading genre. This books characters engaged me from the start making it easy to step into this category of novels.

I did not know it was the second book in a series. I felt a little lost trying to follow the settings. Completely my fault for not reading the first book.

Great summer read. If you are tired of your normal genre I recommend reading this book.

Thank you Sterling & Stone for the copy of this book!

TL/DR: So you’ve read the synopsis and now you want to know what others think. Am I right? I will stand by this statement. The Chaos Caretakers Series is going to be one of those series you wish you started sooner. I had the date in my calendar for when this book came out. No lie. You will laugh, roll your eyes and definitely relate if you are a parent. My opinion? Get the book. If you need more, see below.

You really do need to start with the first book to understand the dynamics of this group, that turns into found family. One of the FMC, Maelie, is a changeling. At the time, she was 7yo, if my memory is correct.

Then there are the two adult main characters. Reece, the FMC, who has her own secrets and Devon, the MMC, who is Reece’s new partner at Hunter’s Inc. Let’s just say a lot happened in the first book and their mission didn’t end up like they thought it would.

Flash forward 5 years, you have a moody tween with immense power and a love for nuggets. Only problem is they live on a commune and they aren’t easy to get. Her solution puts some parenting issues over food in perspective.

Throw in magic, enchantments, more than one bad group of people and some…sorry that would be a spoiler but it was a great twist and you have a quick read that has me personally waiting for the third book.

I cannot recommend this book or series enough. I love the world building, the characters and real life headaches that exist, with or without magic. I would like to thank the authors, the publisher Sterling and Stone and NetGalley for a copy of this book. All opinions are my own and my review is voluntarily given. As always, I wish you happy reading!
