This is an interesting science fiction novel for middle schoolers. It takes its inspiration from Jules Vern’s ”Journey to the Center of the World”, and it includes six-legged horses, Norwegian Forest cats, Atlantis, and the Library of Alexandria. The three children are intoduced by their snurdle guide to the possibilities of a future in which no one needs anything, but has appealing tasks that will benefit all of society–benefits that the Snurdles will share with the humans who live on the surface of the world when the humans ae able to accept them. The description of the underground snurdle world will fascinate curious middles schoolers. There is mention of historical figures who may inspire childen to read more about them. (Parents, of course, are not part of the snurdle experience).
