Moving from Connecticut to West Virginia is hard for the family of four, but after the father loses his job, they must find somewhere they can afford. That move comes with the normal troubles - sadness of leaving home, inability of making friends at the new school, and nerves being ragged as the family objectives don't evolve as planned. What they don't envision is someone who kidnaps and enchants a young girl every fifty years to be a servant,...and it is almost time to take another child. The town is fully aware of the dangers of going into the woods, and the fear has been passed down for generations. When the young family's daughter goes missing, will she be found?

Lots of elements make this story creepy - the setting of both the isolated and rundown house and cabin, the murmurings of the daughter with the doll, the eerie changes in the family dynamics, the torment the children experience at school, the foreboding woods, and the feeling of despair and separation felt throughout the family. Readers who enjoy scary stories will appreciate all the chilling elements found in Took.
